Green to gold – aspects of autumn

This project, led by artist Alex Jakob-Whitworth involved making some Ogilby¹ scroll maps, using drawing, painting, textiles, simple printmaking, and small crafted pieces, inspired by autumnal changes.

Looking at aspects of autumn in the fells – the changes in this season that we see, and may take for granted, key local heritage, flora and fauna, and land use – Alex worked with WI and walking groups, schools, and families. Each group brought their own interests and skills to the project, building ties, and strengthening connections resulting in unusual and imaginative artwork with poetry.

The project generated more long-term thinking, becoming more aware about what we have and the need to protect it, and creating a deeper engagement with the fells, through walk and notice sessions, site specific activities, as well as online sessions.

Alex Jakob-Whitworth has over 25 years’ experience working with all ages in the community and she has lived and worked in the Eden Valley since 2002. Her own art practice is embedded around living amongst the fells, the natural world, and local heritage.
