The seven-metre diameter moon installation will give the high vaulted ceiling and colossal carved columns a glow up like you’ve never seen before. SUMMARY:A Conversation with Nature - art installation by Jane Young
DESCRIPTION:Look out for a temporary art installation by Jane Young amongst the trees at Bowlees between 12th October and 30th November. \nAbout the artist\nJane Young is an artist based in Teesdale who is just at the end of studying MA Fine Art at University of Sunderland. Since 2012\, she has worked as an Artist and Creative Encourager in and around the North East of England. \nJane’s work focuses on art for health and wellbeing within the community. Over the last eighteen months\, and following the Covid-19 pandemic\, she has developed ways to engage the community in addressing concerns around the climate emergency and the threat to our environment\, and has explored how this approach links to states of health and wellbeing. Jane’s work is a collaboration with nature and draws attention to the fragility and beauty of the environment. \nHer installations have been created in the natural settings where she has taken her walks throughout the course of the pandemic and are recorded in a series of videos and photographs on Instagram: www.instagram.com/janeyoungart \nA Conversation with Nature\nJane says: \n“In my work I explore our relationship with the natural world – a voyage of discovery which in turn enables us to become more aware of ourselves. This creates a SelfScape – a keener sense of self and our part in the wider ecology of place which in turn can help with our own and the community’s sense of health and wellbeing. \n“It is my hope that the work I create will help ensure that the appreciation of the natural world does not disappear now that life is getting back to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic – indeed to make certain that\, into the future\, we develop a more sustainable way of living\, caring for and engaging with our environment; a new normal.” \n

DESCRIPTION:Join our Star Camp for an astronomical weekend in Teesdale. The camp is perfect for novice astronomers and is suitable for people aged six and over. Telescopes will be provided\, along with expert guidance and you are welcome to bring your own equipment too\, including cameras (with tripods) and binoculars. There will also be astronomy-themed talks\, solar observing and bottle rocket launching. During the weekend Saturn\, Jupiter\, Neptune and Uranus will all be in the sky\, plus a big Moon\, with its deep craters and high mountains (we can even help you take a picture with your mobile phone). We’ll also take you on a tour of the autumn constellations. You will arrive on the Friday night to a mulled wine reception at 7pm – stargazing will be available (weather permitting) on the Friday and Saturday night with departure on Sunday. DESCRIPTION:Talk and stargazing opportunity at Alston Moor Golf Club – a truly dark site in the South Tyne Valley. The event will be led by North Pennines astronomer and astrophotographer – Gary Lintern and supported by Michael Tweedy\, previous Chairman of Sunderland Astronomy Society. An indoor presentation will take place followed by loan of quality binoculars to see the heavens from outside (so no need to bring your own) plus viewing through a 19 inch telescope. DESCRIPTION:Expert tuition from the Grassholme Observatory team of astronomers\, as they take you on a journey centred around the Aurora Borealis. On certain nights throughout the year\, you may even see the Aurora Borealis from Grassholme. It’s visible in the North Pennine skies\, but the conditions have to be right to see them and those conditions can be very rare indeed. Whilst we cannot guarantee you will see them\, you will certainly leave well informed on how to spot them in future\, and what exactly they are. The event will begin with a personal welcome from Grassholme’s astronomer\, Gary Fildes.
