SUMMARY:Precious peatlands
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of photographs from the North Pennines AONB Partnership’s peatland programme\n14 October 2022 to 31 March 2023 \nThe North Pennines AONB Partnership’s peatland programme has been established for over 16 years and has restored an area of damaged peatland three times the size of the city of Newcastle. This exhibition illustrates the process of restoration\, and the nature and changing seasons seen by the team as they work. Drone shots give a sense of scale and at the other end of the spectrum\, close up images show the intricacies of plants like Sphagnum that make up the rich and biodiverse peatland. The North Pennines has the largest area of contiguous blanket bog in the country and the team works to restore the damage to help mitigate against climate change and flood risk. Healthy peatlands are vital\, and absorb carbon from the atmosphere\, filter water\, sustain wildlife and give the high landscapes of the North Pennines its distinctive appearance. Photographs are by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, and by Teesdale photographer Martin Rogers. \n

SUMMARY:The dark side of the universe
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered what’s out there? Dr. Pete Edwards\, Director of Science Outreach at Durham University will guide you through! Tickets from £10 \n\n\n\n\n\nMost of our universe is missing! When we look into the night sky we realise there is much more out there than meets the eye. Our universe is filled with mysterious dark matter\, whose gravity provides the cosmic glue that holds it all together\, and dark energy\, which is slowly tearing the universe apart. It seems that darkness rules. But what is this dark stuff? How do we know it is there? What does it do? Durham University lecturer Dr. Peter Edwards will provide some answers. After the talk\, you’ll do some stargazing (sky conditions permitting) in the Observatory. \nWrap up warm and bring a red light torch (if you have one). Access to the North Pennines Observatory is via a steep access road and has limited space for parking – please park considerately in the village and walk up or call to reserve a parking space. Warm drinks provided. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22 #NPennDarkSkies \nPrices: \n£10 + booking fee for concessions \n£15 + booking fee general admission \n£40 + booking fee family (2 adults\, 2 children) \n\nBooking essential https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-dark-side-of-the-universe-tickets-405140304557

SUMMARY:Exploring our Milky Way
DESCRIPTION:The Milky Way is one of the most visually impactful objects observable in the night sky. To see it you must have inky black night skies (which we have) and no Moon in the\nsky – there’s no Moon tonight and so fingers crossed for clear skies! \nAt this time of year\, the Milky Way hangs high overhead\, and clearly visible are clusters of stars and dark nebulae that weave through the starfields of our home galaxy. Join the Grassholme Observatory team as we marvel at the visual beauty of them through our many telescopes. Observe different star colours and regions where new stars and planets are being forged. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nBook on the Grassholme Observatory website
