SUMMARY:Art society exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In May the exhibition in the Bowlees Visitor Centre Gallery is a selection of work by members of the Barnard Castle & Teesdale Art Society. The Art Society Summer Exhibition features recent work by about 12 members of the society. Some of the artwork and small cards are for sale. \nBarnard Castle & Teesdale Art Society is a group of enthusiastic amateur artists with varying levels of experience\, meeting on Monday afternoons throughout the year. The group aims to encourage its members in creating art in various mediums\, especially painting and drawing\, with tutored sessions about once a month and mutual assistance at other times. \nThe society meets at Barnard Castle Guide HQ during school terms and for outdoor sketching in various venues (predominantly in Teesdale) in July & August.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Herdship
DESCRIPTION:An outdoor exhibition celebrating hill farming\, which is on display adjacent to the Langdon Beck Hotel in Upper Teesdale. \nPhotographer Joanne Coates spent a year documenting the farming year in Upper Teesdale as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme being delivered by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. \nFor this unique insight into the working life of hill farmers\, tenant farmers Paul and Jen Johnson welcomed Joanne Coates to their Upper Teesdale farm\, Herdship\, on the Raby Estate. The resulting photographs will be exhibited a short distance down the dale in the field at the Langdon Beck Hotel\, from Wednesday 10 June to Sunday 4 June. Entry is free and there is parking at the hotel. \nTwenty images of life\, work\, and the natural year at Herdship will be on display\, set into the landscape high in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The large format images have been mounted on posts which will be repurposed for tree guards at the end of the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Hazel panel making workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are building a small stargazing pavilion on the south-eastern side of Talkin Tarn as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme with Pons Aelius\, the designers and makers\, and Carlisle City Council. \nThe pavilion is to be constructed in timber\, echoing ancient ‘roundhouse’ construction\, with hazel panels wrapped around the outside. All the materials used in the construction are to be sourced locally. The stargazing pavilion will be co-constructed with volunteers who will be making the hazel panels that will encase the green wood uprights and seating. \nGreen woodworker\, Shannon Berry\, will lead the hazel panel making workshops. She is passionate about encouraging people into green woodworking and supporting the skills\, heritage and the makers that produce those products which offer a sustainable choice. During the 3-day workshops there will be a progression of knowledge and skills as the hazel panels needed for the build are made. \nYou must be 18 years or over to take part. We anticipate groups of sixteen people on each 3-day workshop. There is a camping area and local accommodation available. We will provide basic packed lunches and a hot meal in the evening. There are facilities for making hot drinks\, a fridge\, toilets\, showers and fire pit on site. All tools and equipment will be provided. We ask you to wear clothing suitable for the work and the weather with sturdy footwear. \nTo apply for the workshop\, please read more and complete the form here.

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Geological and condition survey at Long Meg
DESCRIPTION:One of Long Meg’s many mysteries is where did people\, 5\,000 years ago\, find all the stones to drag to the site? Working with a small team of geologists\, we will carefully examine all 68 of Long Meg’s Daughters and record the geological structure of each. Using this information\, we will then attempt to work out the likely sources of the stones\, and whether they may have been dumped close to the site by glaciers during the Ice Age. At the same time\, we will record any damage around each stone (eg by rabbits) and this information will be used to plan conservation work. \nVolunteers need no previous experience\, just plenty of enthusiasm to learn more about Long Meg. Professional archaeological and geological supervision will be available on both days. In order to participate in the survey\, volunteers will need to be able to walk around the site\, use a basic camera\, and complete survey forms. Background information will be provided to all participants prior to the survey. \nThe weather in late May in the Eden Valley can be gorgeously hot and sunny\, or more like midwinter. Everyone taking part should check the forecast and wear appropriate clothing. Strong waterproof boots are recommended. \nMeet in the new Long Meg car park at 10am\, finish 5pm (possibly earlier depending on speed of survey\, weather etc). Bring your own packed lunch. \nBook a place via our Better Impact volunteer database here\, if you have already registered on Better Impact. \nRegister on Better Impact here.
