SUMMARY:Volunteer opportunities - plug planting
DESCRIPTION:This autumn we are looking for volunteers to help with plug planting on farms across Teesdale. \nPlug planting helps to increase biodiversity\, creates habitats for pollinators and conserves threatened wildflower species in hay meadows. \nWe will be plug planting at several locations across Teesdale throughout the autumn. \nPlug planting dates: \n\n23 September\, 10:00 – 15:30\n9 October\, 10:00 – 15:30\n17 October\, 10:00 – 15:30\n22 October\, 10:00 – 15:30\n29 October\, 10:00 – 13:00 (followed by Bowlees Nursery drop in)\n6 November\, 10:00 – 15:30\n27 November\, 10:00 – 15:30\n3 December\, 10:00-15:30\n\nAll training and equipment will be provided \nA general level of fitness is required\, please wear outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes. Discover constellations\, planets\, and more with expert guides—perfect for curious minds of all ages. \nDuring the North Pennines Stargazing Festival there are four opportunities to book on this event: \n\nWednesday 29 October\, 5pm to 6.30pm/ 7pm to 8.30pm\nThursday 30 October\, 5pm to 6.30pm/ 7pm to 8.30pm\n\nJoin the High Force team for this child-friendly session\, perfect for budding astronomers to learn about constellations\, planets\, and the wonders of the cosmos. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes. The walk to the waterfall will be dark and may be slippery – suitable footwear is advised. For safety reasons please do not bring large bags\, tripods or other bulky equipment. No dogs please – they’re a trip hazard in the dark. All children must be supervised by an adult. \nThe walk down to the waterfall (approx. 600m) can be challenging for people with mobility issues. Mobility scooters are unable to be used on the route at night. If you have any questions about accessibility please contact High Force Hotel in advance (01833 622336 or highforcehotel@raby.co.uk). \nThe sky can sometimes be restricted by cloud cover or poor conditions. SUMMARY:Dark skies run
DESCRIPTION:Discover the freedom of trail running at night\, in the company of experienced runners\, as we follow the route of the High Force and Bowlees Geotrail. From Low Force we will run the Pennine Way to High Force. After experiencing the atmosphere of this magical place\, under the cover of darkness\, we will cross fields back to the visitor centre for tea and cake. \nThis is a\, guided\, 5-mile (8km) trail run over uneven\, rocky\, muddy and slippery ground. Head torches\, (trail) running shoes and full-body waterproofs will be required. No dogs allowed. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever looked up at the night-time sky and wondered why you can’t see anything other than stars? Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered how far it is to the stars that you can see? Do you want to know what a star is\, how a telescope works\, or even where it all came from? \nIf your answered yes to any of these questions\, then you have come to the right place – Grassholme Observatory’s introduction evenings will cover all things astronomy. \nThere are four chances to book onto this event during the North Pennines Stargazing Festival: Wednesday 29 and Friday 31 October; and Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 November – all 8pm to 11pm. \nThe evening will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer at Grassholme Observatory\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. \nAfter the welcome Gary will take you on a whistle stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nAfter the observing ends\, it is back inside for a hot drink and questions and answers. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly when you are outside. The observatory\, classroom and toilets are accessible.
