DESCRIPTION:Our self-guided trail for the 2026 North Pennines Stargazing Festival is ‘creatures of the night’. \nCome along with your family and explore the woods around Bowlees Visitor Centre. Follow the trail around the site\, taking you on an exciting journey\, discovering the creatures of the night. \nAs you follow the trail you will pick up clues in the form of letters – spell out the word and you will receive a prize. \nPick up your instruction leaflet and answer sheet at the visitor centre – £1 per child. SUMMARY:Wildflower planting opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Join us on farms across Teesdale to help increase biodiversity\, connectivity for pollinators and conserve threatened wildflower species\, by planting out wildflowers into Teesdale’s upland hay meadows. \nThese wildflower plants have been grown from locally hand-collected seeds and looked after for a year by volunteers either at home or at Bowlees Wildflower nursery. \nDelivered as part of the North Pennines National Landscape’s ongoing programme of works\, supporting farmers and landowners to deliver nature recovery. \nWe will be planting out wildflower plants at several locations across Teesdale throughout the autumn\, locations tbc. SUMMARY:Westgate - village history evenings
DESCRIPTION:As part of the village histories project\, we’ll be exploring and recording the natural and cultural heritage of Westgate and its surrounding area. SUMMARY:Dark skies run
DESCRIPTION:Discover the freedom of trail running at night\, in the company of experienced runners\, as we follow the route of the High Force and Bowlees Geotrail. From Low Force we will run the Pennine Way to High Force. After experiencing the atmosphere of this magical place\, under the cover of darkness\, we will cross fields back to the visitor centre for tea and cake. \nThis is a\, guided\, 5-mile (8km) trail run over uneven\, rocky\, muddy and slippery ground. SUMMARY:Astronomy and stargazing
DESCRIPTION:The event at Grassholme Observatory\, on Wednesday 21 October 2026\, 8pm to 11pm\, will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. \nAfter the welcome Gary\, and the team\, will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will be split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nHave you ever looked up at the night-time sky and wondered why you can’t see anything other than stars? Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered how far it is to the stars that you can see? Do you want to know what a star is\, how a telescope works\, or even where it all came from? If your answered yes to any of these questions\, then you have come to the right place – Grassholme Observatory’s introduction evenings will cover all this and more. \nAfter the observing ends it is back into the classroom for a hot drink and a chat\, before heading off home. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly when you are outside. The observatory\, classroom and toilets are accessible.
