DESCRIPTION:Our self-guided trail for the 2026 North Pennines Stargazing Festival is ‘creatures of the night’. \nCome along with your family and explore the woods around Bowlees Visitor Centre. Follow the trail around the site\, taking you on an exciting journey\, discovering the creatures of the night. \nAs you follow the trail you will pick up clues in the form of letters – spell out the word and you will receive a prize. \nPick up your instruction leaflet and answer sheet at the visitor centre – £1 per child. SUMMARY:Volunteer opportunity to remove invasive Garden Lady’s-mantle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a practical day to help dig up and remove invasive Garden Lady’s-mantle (Alchemilla mollis) from an area around an Upper Teesdale beck on Thursday 22 October\, 10am to 3.30pm. \nThis area of Upper Teesdale in the North Pennines National Landscape is especially important for the population of rare native plants that are found there. If the Garden Lady’s-mantle is left to set seed\, there is a risk of it spreading to further sites and possibly out-competing and replacing the important native plant communities. \nThis activity requires a good level of fitness as well as the ability to navigate uneven terrain. Training will be given on the morning of the event. Please bring packed lunch\, and any other refreshments. Please wear outdoor clothing and bring waterproofs\, and wear boots with a sturdy sole. \nExact location will be sent 48 hours prior to the event. Suitable for ages 18+. \nVolunteer opportunities may be postponed due to weather conditions\, any changes will be communicated at least 24 hours before the event where possible. \nDelivered in partnership with Tees Rivers Trust. \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact volunteer platform. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Why space travel is hard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting dark skies event in the Langdon Beck Hotel\, Upper Teesdale\, Co. Durham on Thursday 22 October 2026\, 7pm to 10pm. The evening will be led by Andy Gray – local astronomer and science educator. \nThe evening will start with a talk from Andy Gray on why space travel is hard. Humanity has come a long way in the past 100 years\, breaking free from gravity and reaching Earth’s orbit and the Moon. Andy will explore the challenges of exploring beyond Earth and how likely it is that humans will be able to venture across the Milky Way and continue exploring the Universe. \nAfter Andy’s talk (and if the sky is clear) we will do some informal stargazing in the grounds of the hotel. If live stargazing is not possible there will be an opportunity to ask more questions\, together with a demonstration of the free Stellarium planetarium app. \nThis event is aimed at amateur astronomers and people with an interest in the night sky. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one) and wear suitable shoes for uneven/muddy ground. Bring binoculars if you have a pair. Note that this event will go ahead even if the sky conditions are cloudy. DESCRIPTION:The event at Grassholme Observatory\, on Thursday 22 October 2026\, 8pm to 11pm\, will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. \nAfter the welcome Gary\, and the team\, will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will be split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nHave you ever looked up at the night-time sky and wondered why you can’t see anything other than stars? Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered how far it is to the stars that you can see? Do you want to know what a star is\, how a telescope works\, or even where it all came from? If your answered yes to any of these questions\, then you have come to the right place – Grassholme Observatory’s introduction evenings will cover all this and more. \nAfter the observing ends it is back into the classroom for a hot drink and a chat\, before heading off home. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly when you are outside. The observatory\, classroom and toilets are accessible.
