SUMMARY:Family friendly astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Join the team at the North Pennines Observatory for this family friendly creative introduction to astronomy – bringing together art and science to explore the constellations and our near planets as viewed from the North Pennines. \nGuest astronomer\, Roy Alexander\, will start with a beginner’s guide around the night sky. If the sky is clear you’ll be outside looking up with laser pointers to identify the cosmos looking in particular\, for Saturn\, Jupiter and the constellations of Taurus\, the Seven Sisters\, and much\, much more. If it’s cloudy\, no worries we’ll use our astronomy software and big screen projection to show you a virtual image of the ‘live’ sky that night. \nBut it won’t stop there\, ACA’s creative director and artist Alan Smith will overlap with Roy to take you back through art history looking at how humankind has creatively interpreted the cosmos through some incredible artwork. You will then have the opportunity to draw your own map of the cosmos and create your own constellations to take home. \n\nThis event is suitable for families (8 years +) or anyone of any age or ability wanting to explore the wonders of the universe.\n\nAdvance booking is essential via https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/family-friendly-creative-introduction-to-astronomy-tickets-1024914235067 \n\n£12.50 concessions (under 18)\n£19 adult (18+)\n£52 family (2 adults\, 2 children)\n\nNorth Pennines Observatory @ ACA\, Allenheads Contemporary Arts\, Old School House\, Allenheads\, Hexham\, Northumberland NE47 9HR. Visit https://www.acart.org.uk/observatory-allenheads for details. \nIf the sky is clear\, we’ll open up the observatory to take a closer look at the night sky after the talk and arts activities. Observing the skies is weather-dependent\, but you’ll be pleased to know that events go ahead whatever the weather. The team at the observatory aim to deliver exciting and interesting events every time. \nWrap up warm and bring a red light torch (if you have one). All art materials provided. Access to the North Pennines Observatory is via a steep access road and has limited space for parking – please park considerately in the village and walk up or message (helenshead@acart.org.uk) to reserve a parking space. Warm drinks will be provided. \nDoors open 6.15 pm. Please arrive early for welcome hot drinks. The presentation will allow plenty of time for questions and discussion. Finish time may be extended to continue stargazing on a clear night. \nAsk about stargazing sleepovers at the onsite accommodation at the Observatory Cabin (up to 3 people) or the larger 4-bedroom accommodation at the Old School House. Book for this event or another private\, bespoke stargazing experience. Contact helenshead@acart.org.uk for more information. \nThis North Pennines Observatory @ ACA event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 25 October to 3 November 2024 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org #NorthPennStarFest24 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Knitted smelters shawl workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us in honouring the legacy of the lead smelters and showcasing the timeless art of knitting. This workshop is being held at Rookhope Village Hall\, Rookhope on Saturday 22 June\, 1pm to 3pm\, and is suitable for adults. \nLast year\, artist Carole McCourt stumbled upon a fascinating photograph of a group of smelters at Rookhope Smelt Mill\, each donning a knitted shawl. This image sparked an idea: to celebrate this unique heritage skill and the rich history of lead smelters through a community project. Her vision is now coming to life as part of the North Pennines National Landscape’s Land of Lead and Silver project. \nThe workshop involves recreating a knitted shawl inspired by those in the historic photograph. Carole has developed a pattern that pays homage to the original shawls while allowing for creative expression. We are inviting local knitting groups and individual knitters to join us. \nWe will provide you with a pattern based on the historic shawls and some yarn to get you started. The pattern is designed to be simple enough for complete beginners\, but it also offers opportunities for experienced knitters to showcase their skills with techniques like Fair Isle and cabling. \nThis workshop is part of the 2024 Land of Lead and Silver community arts programme. Carole McCourt is one of four community arts bursary recipients. SUMMARY:Artist workshop - remixing the sounds of the fells
DESCRIPTION:Are you an artist\, musician or creative that would like to help remix the sounds of the Fellfoot Forward area for a special public event? \nJoin us for a free full day workshop to learn skills and develop new audio-visual work to be performed at a public event later in October at Melmerby Village Hall. \nThis event is being facilitated by BlueJam Arts and Eden Valley Artistic Network\, and delivered as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme. \nThe focus for the workshop will be on sharing\, remixing and creatively responding to the diverse sounds of the Fellfoot Forward landscape\, from its rivers and streams\, to its birdsong and shifting social landscapes. Attendees will have an opportunity to remix longform recordings of the Fellfoot Forward area\, including a stunning dawn chorus collected by Fellfoot Forward artists who worked with renowned natural sound artist\, Chris Watson\, in May 2023. Watch the video of the workshop. \nYou will be supported to create new work that inspires new ways of listening to the landscape. This could be any audio-visual or performed work (predominantly sound and music but also projected images/video\, spoken word\, and creative writing). We are open and interested in a range of creative practices at the event. \nThe day will combine presentation and demonstrations\, making and creating\, informal discussion\, listening and with plenty of space for solo and collaborative development of new work. It will be a friendly and accessible event where artists/creatives are supported to feel  part of a wider community of creative practice. \nThe produced work will be showcased at an event on Sunday 22 October at Melmerby village hall featuring the creative responses to the sounds of the Fellfoot Forward landscape. Audio works will also be broadcast on Fellfoot Radio\, an online radio stream. \nPlease note spaces are limited. Register your interest by emailing BlueJam Arts. \nThe Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThis event is part of ‘Everything Changes\, Everything Stays The Same’\, the Fellfoot Forward LPS community arts project for 2023\, which has been funded by Arts Council England and Westmorland and Furness Council. \n
