SUMMARY:National Meadows Day at Low Way Farm - family event
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 1 July 10am to 3pm for a day celebrating the magnificent meadows and farming history of Teesdale. The North Pennines AONB contains almost half of the remaining species-rich upland hay meadows in the UK. As well as being a rare and important habitat for wildflowers\, upland hay meadows also support a whole range of invertebrates and birds. \nHigh Nature Value farming practices in the uplands mean that many of these meadows are being managed in much the same way that they have been for generations. These farming practices protect the unique habitats of the North Pennines whilst also producing high quality food. Whilst the management regime of meadows is similar now to 200 years ago\, the machinery available to farmers has changed beyond all recognition from scythes to large tractors and mowers\, and from handmade pikes of hay to modern balers. \nWe want to celebrate this important habitat and its cultural history with a variety of fun activities suitable for all ages. There is no need to book\, come along and take part in activities: \n\ndisplay of farming machinery old and new\ndisplay of machinery used for meadow restoration\nbotany walk around the meadows\nart and craft activities\na closer look at the special species of plants through a microscope\ndisplay of typical upland hay meadow species grown from hand-collected local seed\nmeadow restoration talk\ndisplay of historic hay-time photographs\n\nDelicious tea and scones will be on sale made by the Farmhouse Kitchen. \nLocation : Low Way Farm\, Holwick.\nCar parking available\, access from road the towards Holwick (follow signs for The Farmhouse Kitchen) ///addicted.proven.encloses \nOr \nAccess on foot from Middleton or Bowlees via Pennine way: ///dark.releasing.going \n  \n

SUMMARY:Spirit of place: art activity
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 5 July 10am to 1pm for a fun and friendly outdoor workshop to discover secrets of the lead mining landscape of Bollihope through drawing. \nWith guidance and demonstrations from North Pennine artist Lionel Playford we will explore ways of sketching\, not just the appearance of this heritage landscape with its fascinating history\, but something of the spirit of the place as it feels to each of us. \nA member of the North Pennines AONB team will be answering questions about what we are drawing\, the lead mining history and to help picture working life when the quarry and mines were operating. \nYou are welcome to bring your own drawing materials. There will also be a supply of sketchbooks; graphite\, charcoal and watercolour pencils available. \nThe activity will be based at Bollihope Bottoms and is suitable for ages 8+. \nImage: Lionel Playford \nTo book tickets please use the link below. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n       \nImage: Lionel Playford \n
