SUMMARY:Dark sky astronomy and stargazing
DESCRIPTION:The event will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer at Grassholme Observatory\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. During the North Pennines Stargazing Festival there are three evenings to choose from\, Friday 24\,  Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October\, 8pm to 11pm. \nAfter the welcome Gary will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will be split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nWith no Moon in the sky\, you will look out for the Milky Way\, and many deep sky objects like galaxies\, nebulae and star clusters. You will then use the robotic telescope to scour the skies for other jewels in the cosmos. Then it’s back into the classroom for a hot drink and questions. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly when you are outside. The observatory\, classroom and toilets are accessible. SUMMARY:Wild Wednesday - seeds of the summer
DESCRIPTION:Wild Wednesdays are are activities suitable for children aged five and over to enjoy and be creative. \nJoin us on a family-friendly walk to collect seeds from local wildflowers. Bring the collections back to the visitor centre to sow in the tree and wildflower nursey\, and make a seed bomb to take home with you. \nAll materials and equipment will be provided. Please wear sturdy footwear\, and clothing suitable for the weather and potentially messy activities. \nSuitable for children aged five to 12 years. All children need to be accompanied by an adult. (Younger siblings are welcome but do not need to book). Accompanying adults are free and do not need to book. \nPlease use the Ticketsource link to book. \n\n\n\n                \n                \n\n\n \n  \nWhat is a seed bomb? – A seed bomb is a handmade clay ball that contain a mix of compost and seeds. After the bomb has been thrown and the seeds have begun to germinate the bomb will slowly break apart. The soil will then provide a base for the seeds to start growing.

SUMMARY:Nenthead200 animation drop-in
DESCRIPTION:Local animation artist\, Robin Webb\, will be running animation drop-in sessions during the Nenthead200 weekend in the Barracks building a Nenthead Mines on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August. \nHave a go at producing your own stop-motion animations using plasticine or cut-outs to bring your Nenthead200 inspired creations to life. No prior knowledge of animation is needed as you’ll be given full instructions on how to create and make your productions. \nYour animations could also form part of a Land of Lead & Silver animation tellIng the story of the North Pennines mining heritage which Robin is working on. \nRobin is also looking for photos new and old\, video footage of the landscape\, places and the people\, any drawings or paintings you have made (they must be your own and original works) for the animation. Contribute your photographs\, videos\, art\, drawings\, paintings\, and even your words or sounds to both inspire and be part of this visual telling of the story of the North Pennines mining heritage. \nImages can be accepted in any digital format\, preferably at full resolution\, videos ideally should be in landscape though not essential\, .MP4 or .mov files are great\, please don’t send in original artwork all you need to do is photograph it in a good light\, try to avoid shadows and reflections from a strong or coloured light. Sounds can be sent in as well either in mp3 or .WAV formats. Any words or written work can be sent in using Microsoft Word or PDF formats. SUMMARY:Nenthead200 animation drop-in
DESCRIPTION:Local animation artist\, Robin Webb\, will be running animation drop-in sessions during the Nenthead200 weekend in the Barracks building a Nenthead Mines on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August. \nHave a go at producing your own stop-motion animations using plasticine or cut-outs to bring your Nenthead200 inspired creations to life. No prior knowledge of animation is needed as you’ll be given full instructions on how to create and make your productions. \nYour animations could also form part of a Land of Lead & Silver animation tellIng the story of the North Pennines mining heritage which Robin is working on. \nRobin is also looking for photos new and old\, video footage of the landscape\, places and the people\, any drawings or paintings you have made (they must be your own and original works) for the animation. Contribute your photographs\, videos\, art\, drawings\, paintings\, and even your words or sounds to both inspire and be part of this visual telling of the story of the North Pennines mining heritage. \nImages can be accepted in any digital format\, preferably at full resolution\, videos ideally should be in landscape though not essential\, .MP4 or .mov files are great\, please don’t send in original artwork all you need to do is photograph it in a good light\, try to avoid shadows and reflections from a strong or coloured light. Sounds can be sent in as well either in mp3 or .WAV formats. Any words or written work can be sent in using Microsoft Word or PDF formats. DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the London Lead Company planning the village of Nenthead. A weekend-long event is being organised by the North Pennines National Landscape team and volunteers from the local community to celebrate this anniversary. \nEveryone is welcome at the Nenthead 200 celebration on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August which will be a traditional village fair with competitions\, games\, music\, and activities alongside an evening of food and music and a quiz. \nSaturday 23 August:\nMine tours at Nenthead Mines (book via their website)\nMining display at the Nenthead Mines barracks building\nCommunity performance by Alston Drama Group in collaboration with the Knotted Project\nCraft demonstrations\nLocal bands playing in the church\nNenthead supper and music evening\, 6-11pm at Nenthead Village Hall. Tickets £10 for adults over 16 years\, (Under 16’s are free but must be accompanied by an adult). \nSunday 24 August:\nMine tours at Nenthead Mines (book via their website)\nMining display at the Nenthead Mines barracks building\nCompetition judging and winner announcements\nStanhope Silver band\nQuiz at The Hive – doors open 5pm for start at 5.30pm\, entry is free \nThe competitions are open for all to enter and include: \n\nPhoto competition – recreating or reinterpreting a historical photo of Nenthead’s landscape or people. Entry forms will be available from St John’s Church\, Nenthead and online\, the deadline for entries is Saturday 2 August with drop-off in the box at the church. The entries will be displayed for voting by visitors and the winners and prizes will be announced on Sunday 24 August.\nUnder 16’s photo competition – take a snapshot relating to the theme of nature. Entry forms will be available from St John’s Church\, Nenthead and online\, the deadline for entries is Saturday 2 August with drop-off in the box at the church. Entries will be judged by local photographer Terry Stout. The winners and prizes will be announced on Sunday 24 August.\nNenthead200 Photo Competition Submission Form\nScarecrow competition – mining/ Nenthead history themed scarecrows to be displayed outside homes from Monday 4 August. Entries will be judged by the Leek Club and the winners announced on the afternoon of Sunday 24 August.\nCostume competition – dress up in mining or Nenthead inspired garb and meet at Nenthead Mines car park on Saturday 23 August\, 10.30am\, to process to the playing field for judging. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Saturday stroll for North Pennines NatureFest celebrating the unique flora of the area. \nLocal artist Carole McCourt will lead a guided walk from Westgate\, Weardale\, 31 May\, 10.30am to 2.30pm\, to explore the delicate balance between geology and botany\, where plants have adapted to survive in challenging conditions. \nThe event begins with a short presentation\, followed by an easy walk learning about a variety of wildflowers\, grasses\, and lichens\, including rare lead-tolerant plants known as metallophytes. See species like Spring Sandwort (leadwort)\, Pyrenean Scurvy Grass\, Alpine Pennycress\, and Wild Mountain Pansies\, which thrive here in abundance during May to July. \nAfter the walk\, return for lunch and a creative workshop\, using art materials (provided) to capture the beauty of the landscape and its plants. \nPlease wear suitable footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather\, and bring a packed lunch and drinks. The event is suitable for families with children over the age of seven. Dogs on short leads are welcome. \nSuggested donation £3 per adult\, £2 per child. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create nature-inspired prints using botanicals collected from the North Pennines in this hands-on family friendly event. The workshop at Allendale Village Hall\, Sunday 25 May\, 2.30pm to 4.30pm\, is designed for everyone to enjoy the magic of printing from real plants. \nGuided by artist Carole McCourt\, explore the rich diversity of local flora\, from delicate wildflowers to sturdy grasses and ferns\, and transform them into works of art. Using gelatine plates – a soft\, flexible printing surface – create unique\, colourful prints that capture the intricate details and textures of each plant. Experiment with layering\, colour\, and design to make your own pieces of artwork to take home. \nAll art materials\, plants and botanicals to print with will be provided. Please wear comfortable clothing you don’t mind getting a bit messy. Suitable for families with children over the age of 7 years.
