SUMMARY:Pennine Way volunteer information sessions - online
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for volunteers to join our team of Pennine Way People – a team of volunteers who help us monitor and maintain a 73-mile stretch from Tan Hill on the Teesdale/ North Yorkshire border to Greenhead in Northumberland. We are holding two online information sessions\, which will be for about an hour\, on Monday 9 March\, to share more details of how to get involved. \nThe route attracts thousands of walkers every year and when combined with temperamental weather conditions the trail can become a victim of its own success\, with the ground underfoot becoming boggy and eroded\, and stiles and gates becoming difficult to use. \nHow can you can get involved?\nWe are looking for:- \nChampion volunteers – people who will ‘adopt’ a stretch of the Pennine Way. This involves walking a designated stretch of the route 3 to 5 times per year and reporting any problems. \nBuddy volunteers – those who may be available to double up with a champion on certain stretches and help with transport logistics from the start to the finish of the route.. \nMaintenance volunteers – those that can help with a regular programme of practical works including stile repairs\, drystone walling\, path resurfacing and drainage works. \nJoin a session without commitment\, find out about what is entailed with each of the roles\,  and to let you know how you can register your interest and what the next steps will be. No prior experience is required but an appropriate level of fitness suited to the volunteer role would be beneficial. \nPlease register to attend one of the two events here via our TicketSource platform. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nIf you have any other questions or are unable to attend one of the designated information sessions\, please feel free to contact Adam Crolla at adamc@northpennines.org.uk or Emma Harle at Eharle@northpennine.org.uk

SUMMARY:The digital direction of peatland restoration: automation and digital twins
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online webinar\, hosted by EUROPARC Atlantic Isles\, on Wednesday 21 February\, 11.55am to 13.30pm. \nThe UK rapidly needs to increase its peatland restoration efforts to meet climate change and biodiversity targets. A major part of the solution lies in increasing financial resources\, but another route is for restoration practitioners to embrace digital technologies to improve the efficiency of restoration. Using remote sensing data and custom-built GIS models/scripts\, it is now possible to automatically map erosional peatland features\, such as hagg edges\, in seconds/minutes compared to days/weeks of manual work. Combining automated outputs with digital twins then allows for an immersive quality checking process and restoration interventions to be decided on from the desk rather than via labour-intensive field surveys. \nThe North Pennines National Landscape is the second largest of the 38 National Landscapes (previously known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty\, AONBs) in England and Wales\, containing approximately 900 km2 of peatland which has been historically drained and degraded. The North Pennines National Landscape team has been successfully restoring these peatlands since 2006. \nPlease book using the link https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3839597293371806810

SUMMARY:Annual Forum 2023
DESCRIPTION:The North Pennines National Landscape’s Annual Forum is an opportunity to find out about some of the recent and upcoming work of the National Landscape staff team and to discuss matters relating to the future well-being of our natural and cultural heritage. We are running the event online once again\, and hope that this allows as many people as possible to join us. \nThis year\, as well as a more general round up of our main areas of work and some of the issues facing National Landscapes\, there will be a focus on what makes a 21st century protected landscape. You will hear from team members working on projects to benefit people\, climate and nature. \nThis year’s panel discussion will consider the future for our national landscapes. Look out for announcements of our panel in the coming weeks. \nTo round off the event\, the 2023 winner of the ‘Pendlebury Award’ (in memory of the Partnership’s first chairman\, Cllr. Bob Pendlebury) will be announced\, marking an outstanding achievement in conserving the National Landscape or helping others to explore\, enjoy and understand this special place. \nBooking is essential and full joining details will be shared with registered attendees in the week leading up to the forum. Please book by Monday 11 December. \nPlease use the Ticketsource link to book \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Improving the experiences of disabled visitors to the North Pennines
DESCRIPTION:A free online training event for tourism businesses and community groups in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This event will take place on 14 March between 10:30am – 2:30pm. (There will be a break for lunch between 1pm -1:30pm). The shorter session after lunch is an optional informal space to talk and reflect together on the training. \nThis workshop is aimed at improving the experience of disabled visitors to the area. We hope to support you to make proactive changes and to better handle unexpected situations when they arise.\nMost of our buildings are old and there are limitations on what can be done to make them physically more accessible. Yet ‘accessibility’ is so much more than lifts and ramps. For example\, 80% of disabled people have a hidden disability. \nIn this online workshop\, led by disabled trainers from Difference Northeast\, we will explore:\n– The different kinds of barriers that might be putting disabled visitors off\n– Media/mainstream attitudes to disabled people and how these might influence how we try to interact\n– How to offer help and when not to\n– Types of information to share to give people a clearer sense of what to expect. \nPlease contact scarlet@northpenninesaonb.org.uk if you have any queries. \n  \nClick here to book a free place. Places are available to book up until 1 day before the event. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:The stream invites us to follow lunchtime talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Fellfoot Forward lunchtime talk – The Stream Invites Us To Follow – exploring the Eden from source to sea – on Thursday 10 February at 12.30pm via Zoom (running time approx. 1 hour). \nDick Capel made a journey over several years\, mainly on foot\, keeping company with the River Eden and some of its tributaries from source to sea. He kept a journal of copious notes as he went which eventually became a book\, ‘The Stream Invites Us To Follow’. Much like the valley itself\, this book is a meeting of the natural world\, the people who inhabit it\, their stories\, history and skills – traditional and modern. \nAs a long time countryside manager for the Eden Valley\, few people know this area quite as intimately as Dick Capel. He worked hard to protect the natural and built heritage of the area and was involved over the years in many inspirational projects\, including the Poetry Path\, Goldsworthy Sheepfolds\, Eden Benchmarks\, and Discover Eden. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England. We have developed Fellfoot Forward with local communities and organisations\, and in 2020 the scheme was awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThis is an online talk using the Zoom platform\, you will receive your link and information for logging on 24 hours before the event\, therefore booking is essential. Ticket sales open 24 December.

Bruce Bennison will take us on a quick journey through time\, introducing the history of Cumrew and highlighting some of the methods that anyone can use to build up a picture of life in a small Fellside village over 5\,000 years. \nThe aim is to show what can be done using resources which are freely available online\, and how they can be combined with deeper research\, using the excellent facilities of local libraries and archive centres. The results can be fascinating and addictive! \nBruce Bennison is a retired local government officer living in Newbiggin\, just north of Croglin\, in the heart of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme area. SUMMARY:Owls in the Fellfoot Forward area webinar
DESCRIPTION:Fellfoot Forward volunteer John Miles shares his experience of working in the area from the early eighties with owls\, and with the North Cumbria Barn Owl group. The area is fortunate to have many of the habitats that owls require\, although sadly one species has declined to such an extent that it is now rarely seen. \nLearn more about these silent predators\, five species of which breed in the UK. The Barn Owl\, Tawny Owl\, Long-eared Owl\, and Short-eared Owl are native to Britain\, and the Little Owl was introduced in the late 1800s. The small numbers of Eagle Owl which breed here are thought to be escapees or deliberate releases. \nThis is an online event using the ZOOM platform. You will receive your link and information for logging on 24 hours before the event\, therefore booking is essential. To book your place\, use the link below or click here.

SUMMARY:Sphagnum moss online talk
DESCRIPTION:Our last talk on the importance of Sphagnum sold out very quickly\, so we are running the event again on 16 March. \nIn this online talk\, Senior Field Officer Alistair Lockett looks at Sphagnum moss and asks what all the fuss is about. This often overlooked\, extraordinary moss is tackling climate change\, mitigating flooding and was even used during the First World War to protect soldiers. Alistair will cover ecology\, interesting facts about Sphagnum\, Sphagnum and peat in the horticultural industry\, and how it is being used to combat climate change. You will receive a Zoom link by email approx. 24 hours before the event. \nThis event is brought to you as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme\, principally funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Upland wader identification webinar
DESCRIPTION:Through the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme we are hosting an online event looking at upland breeding waders on 10 March at 6pm. \nLapwing\, Curlew\, Redshank\, Snipe and Oystercatcher are all nationally threatened and on the Birds of Conservation Concern (BoCC) red or amber list. The upland habitats within Teesdale and Swaledale represent one of their few remaining strongholds in the UK and these species are dependent on the uplands for breeding habitat. \nJanet Fairclough and Liz Charman from the RSPB will talk about the birds found on upland farms in Teesdale and Swaledale\, why they are important and how to identify them. We will also provide a brief overview of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme and the opportunities for farmers/landowners and members of the public to get involved.
