SUMMARY:Working on land within SSSIs and Agri-environment schemes
DESCRIPTION:Training for agricultural contractors & land managers in the Tees-Swale area.\n \nA  chance to learn more about SSSIs and agri-environment schemes and what to be aware of when working on these areas. The Tees-Swale naturally connected programme area has a significant amount of land designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and high uptake of agri-environment schemes such as Higher Level Stewardship and Countryside Stewardship. It is therefore important that contractors are aware of the implications of working in these areas. \n  \nDuring this training session for agricultural contractors and land managers\, a presentation will give an overview of SSSIs and agri-environment schemes and the related legislation/regulations\, followed by a Q&A session.  There will be a chance to learn more about the North Pennines AONB Partnership’s Tees-Swale naturally connected programme and the opportunities for agricultural contractors to get involved. \n  \nThe event is free to attend and will be run online as a Zoom meeting. SUMMARY:Owls in the Fellfoot Forward area webinar
DESCRIPTION:Fellfoot Forward volunteer John Miles shares his experience of working in the area from the early eighties with owls\, and with the North Cumbria Barn Owl group. The area is fortunate to have many of the habitats that owls require\, although sadly one species has declined to such an extent that it is now rarely seen. \nLearn more about these silent predators\, five species of which breed in the UK. The Barn Owl\, Tawny Owl\, Long-eared Owl\, and Short-eared Owl are native to Britain\, and the Little Owl was introduced in the late 1800s. DESCRIPTION:Through the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme we are hosting an online event looking at upland breeding waders on 10 March at 6pm. \nLapwing\, Curlew\, Redshank\, Snipe and Oystercatcher are all nationally threatened and on the Birds of Conservation Concern (BoCC) red or amber list. The upland habitats within Teesdale and Swaledale represent one of their few remaining strongholds in the UK and these species are dependent on the uplands for breeding habitat. \nJanet Fairclough and Liz Charman from the RSPB will talk about the birds found on upland farms in Teesdale and Swaledale\, why they are important and how to identify them. DESCRIPTION:Learn about camera trapping\, including where to set up your camera\, using fieldcraft skills\, downloading and storing images\, how to identify species\, and recording your findings for science and county wildlife records. The webinar will also include an informal Q&A session and a demo of how to set up and use one of the new communal use cameras (which will be available to loan through the Fellfoot Forward LPS). \nCamera traps\, or trail cameras\, are remote cameras that will take still photos or video clips of mammals\, birds\, and\, sometimes\, reptiles. They are triggered by a combination of motion and infra-red heat and are particularly effective at night\, revealing wildlife that you may have no idea is around your local area. Cameras can be used in gardens but are best used on trails where animals cross becks\, walls and other obstructions on their favourite travel routes. \nA link to a training film (filmed at an existing camera site in the Fellfoot Forward area)\, as well as highlights of what you might find and see\, will be available in advance of the event on the Fellfoot Forward Facebook group and the North Pennines AONB website. In anticipation of the launch of the Fellfoot Forward Uncovering the Past project in 2021 and forthcoming training and workshop events\, local historian Bruce Bennison will take us through an introduction to LIDAR. \nLIDAR is one of a number of new survey techniques\, available to amateur and professional archaeologists\, and one which can be explored through the comfort of your own home on these dark winter nights. Careful examination of detailed landscapes captured by LIDAR has revealed previously unknown sites whether prehistoric or more recent\, such as evidence for early industry across Cumbria. Using examples of what can be seen just within the Fellfoot area\, Bruce will help set the scene for some exciting opportunities to learn more and get involved with Uncovering the Past\, during 2021. \nBruce Bennison is a retired local government officer living in Newbiggin\, just north of Croglin\, in the heart of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership scheme area. Bruce has lived in the area for over 20 years\, now in retirement\, he is a valued volunteer as part of the scheme. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England. DESCRIPTION:This Zoom talk will be led by North Pennines-based astrophotographer and astronomer Gary Lintern. We’ll be looking at how to get the best from your camera when shooting in the dark. Gary will cover how to shoot anything\, especially landscapes\, in dark conditions\, and he will also pay special attention to photographing the Moon and stars. Lastly we’ll also discuss how to use apps and free software to plan night shoots. To get the best results you will need to be using a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. DESCRIPTION:The Northern lights\, or Aurora Borealis\, is an otherworldly colourful\, dancing light show. This evening talk will be presented by Dr Martin Kitching\, from Astroventures and Northern Experience Wildlife Tours\, will explore the Northern Lights – what they are and how to see them. Martin will be showcasing some amazing images and telling some tales about his experiences chasing the aurora. DESCRIPTION:Andromeda is the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way. It was first noticed in ancient times as a faint smudge in the sky and that’s how it looks when you see it from the dark skies of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and UNESCO Global Geopark. In this talk\, science educator and astronomer\, Andy Gray will be explaining how you can see and photograph the Andromeda Galaxy and how it compares to our home galaxy. He’ll also wonder about the chances of alien life watching us from there. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Week 2020\, a celebration of the dark skies in the darkest mainland AONB.

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward LPS Welcome Event: The Reservoir Story\, an evening zoom talk with Tom Speight
DESCRIPTION:On July 22nd\, 1909\, Castle Carrock had a party. The Mayor of Carlisle was in town\, along with 150 of the great and good from his city. They had descended on the sleepy Pennine village to celebrate the opening of a brand new reservoir –  “the greatest undertaking of which the city of Carlisle had ever embarked upon”. Over 700 navvies had spent 6 years building a brand new water supply system for the city\, commissioned by the Carlisle Corporation to quench the thirst of an expanding metropolis.  \nJoin local resident\, historian and poet\, Tom Speight\, in a 45 minute illustrated talk sharing an 111-year-old story of how and why the reservoir was built\, who built it – and at what cost. \nThis event offers a prelude to the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme’s historic and cultural projects including Uncovering the Past\, a community archaeology and local history programme that will start in Spring 2021. \nOnce booked\, you will receive a confirmation of your place and 24 hrs before the talk you will receive your zoom login\, via email. Only one booking is required per household. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England.
