DESCRIPTION:Discover the freedom of trail running at night\, in the company of experienced runners\, as we follow the route of the High Force and Bowlees Geotrail. From Low Force we will run the Pennine Way to High Force. After experiencing the atmosphere of this magical place\, under the cover of darkness\, we will cross fields back to the visitor centre for tea and cake. \nThis is a\, guided\, 5-mile (8km) trail run over uneven\, rocky\, muddy and slippery ground. Head torches\, (trail) running shoes and full-body waterproofs will be required. No dogs allowed. SUMMARY:Why space travel is hard
DESCRIPTION:Come along for an exciting dark skies event in Croglin Village Hall\, on the western edge of the North Pennines on Cumbria’s eastern fellside\, Thursday 30 October\, 7pm to 10pm. \nThe evening will start with a talk from Andy Gray on why space travel is hard. Humanity has come a long way in the past 100 years\, breaking free from gravity and reaching Earth’s orbit and the Moon. Andy will explore the challenges of exploring beyond Earth and how likely it is that humans will be able to venture across the Milky Way and continue exploring the Universe. \nAfter Andy’s talk (and if the sky is clear) we will do some informal stargazing at a dark site (field) a short walk from the village hall. Be prepared for a potentially muddy walk and rocky/uneven ground. Gates but no stiles. If live stargazing is not possible there will be an opportunity to ask more questions\, together with a demonstration of the free Stellarium planetarium app. \nThis event is aimed at amateur astronomers and people with an interest in the night sky. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one) and wear suitable shoes for uneven/muddy ground. Bring binoculars if you have a pair. \nNo dogs please – they’re a trip hazard in the dark. \nAdults 18+: £15\nChild (under 18): £10\nConcessions (65+): £10\nFamily (4 people in total – 2 adults\, 3 concessions or 2 adults\, 2 concessions): £45 \nThere is very limited parking at the village hall. Please park in Croglin village and walk the short distance to the hall (about 200m SE along the B6413 from the centre of the village). DESCRIPTION:If you have ever wanted to capture the wonders of the night sky but don’t know where to start – this is the event for you. \nMartin Kitching\, Director of Northern Experience Wildlife Tours\, is your speaker for this evening talk/workshop on Tuesday 20 October 2026\, 7pm to 9pm. Martin is an accomplished astrophotographer with many years of practical experience both as an astronomer and photographer. \nDuring the event\, which is aimed at beginners/improvers\, Martin will take you through the basics of night-time photography and will share with you some hints and tips to improve your after-dark images. \nThe event is being held at Carrshield Village Hall which has access to a dark night sky. If the sky conditions are suitable\, we will hopefully get outside and try and put Martin’s tips into practice. Note that the event will still take place if the sky is overcast. \nThe toilet facilities consist of a compost toilet (shared with people staying in the camping barn) above the village hall. Accessing the toilets involves a short (approx 50m) outside walk on uneven ground. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one) and wear suitable shoes for uneven ground. From Low Force we will run the Pennine Way to High Force. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting dark skies event in the Langdon Beck Hotel\, Upper Teesdale\, Co. Durham on Thursday 22 October 2026\, 7pm to 10pm. The evening will be led by Andy Gray – local astronomer and science educator. \nThe evening will start with a talk from Andy Gray on why space travel is hard. Humanity has come a long way in the past 100 years\, breaking free from gravity and reaching Earth’s orbit and the Moon. Andy will explore the challenges of exploring beyond Earth and how likely it is that humans will be able to venture across the Milky Way and continue exploring the Universe. \nAfter Andy’s talk (and if the sky is clear) we will do some informal stargazing at a dark site (field) a short walk from the village hall. Be prepared for a potentially muddy walk and rocky/uneven ground. Gates but no stiles. If live stargazing is not possible there will be an opportunity to ask more questions\, together with a demonstration of the free Stellarium planetarium app. \nThis event is aimed at amateur astronomers and people with an interest in the night sky. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one) and wear suitable shoes for uneven/muddy ground. SUMMARY:Alston Moor stargazing
DESCRIPTION:Join astronomers up at the Alston Moor Golf Club and Observatory on Friday 30 October 2026\, 7pm to 9.30pm\, for an exciting evening under the dark skies of the upper South Tyne Valley. \nTo begin the evening there will be a presentation: ‘From an inch to forty meters the largest telescope on Earth’\, by Dr Jurgen Schmoll\, from Durham University\, who will draw the time line of world largest telescopes from the beginning to the 39.5m telescope just being built. \nAfter Jurgen’s talk there will be an opportunity to see and use the Alston Moor Golf Club Observatory and\, weather permitting\, there will be guided stargazing. \nThe clubhouse will be open from 7pm – for an event start at 7.30pm. It is expected to finish between 9 and 9.30pm – with the option to continue stargazing afterwards\, if conditions allow. \nNote that if the skies are cloudy the event will still go ahead – with astronomers giving presentations\, providing information and answering questions on dark skies and stargazing. \nRefreshments will be available in the club house. \n\nAdult – £12 (18+)\nChildren – £8 (8-18)\n\nPlease book using the link to Ticketsource \n\n\n\n                \n                \n\n\nThere is also the opportunity to find out about and join a new stargazing group – the Alston Moor Astronomical Society (AMAS). \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one) and wear suitable shoes for uneven ground.
