SUMMARY:Farming and nature talk: gamekeepers love the uplands
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this date has changed from 5 November\nThis winter we are holding a series of evening talks with the theme of examining the links between farming and nature. The talks\, held at The Moorcock Inn in Eggleston\, 7.30pm to 9pm\, are open to farmers and landowners as well as members of the public. Each evening there will be an invited speaker with the opportunity of discussion afterwards. \nAt the final talk of the series\, on Wednesday 26 November\, Andrew Hyslop\, Raby Estates Head Gamekeeper will be discussing his upbringing on a hill farm in Weardale\, where a childhood surrounded by wildlife and time spent with local gamekeepers sparked a lifelong passion. He will discuss why Teesdale is such a special place to work and what a typical year looks like managing a moor. \nThe talk will highlight the parallels between farming and gamekeeping\, as well as the vital conservation and public education work carried out by gamekeepers. \nEveryone welcome\, booking required. If you are a Tees-Swale farmer you can come to this talk for free\, please email molly@northpennines.org.uk to get the code. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n   \n  \nDelivered as part of the Tees-Swale: Naturally Connected programme. Tees-Swale is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and led by the North Pennines National Landscape team in collaboration with the Yorkshire Dales National Park. \n

SUMMARY:Historic environment research opportunity: unlocking the asylum archives
DESCRIPTION:Join us online to learn about a new volunteer research project revealing untold stories in historical collections from Garlands Asylum (Carlisle Archives)\, Winterton Hospital (The Story\, Durham)\, and St George’s Hospital (Woodhorn\, Northumberland). The event will be via Teams on Thursday\, 20 November\, 6pm to 7pm. \nCounty asylum records give a rare and intimate glimpse into the past through medical notes\, casebooks\, family letters\, and photographs. The project traces patients from lead mining communities to shed light onto the emotional worlds of people who are often absent from historical records save a name on a census report. \nThere are several roles for volunteers as the project develops including transcribing case notes\, photographing records\, and researching census reports and newspapers\, to build patient life stories. No prior experience is necessary\, and volunteers will be supported in learning and sharing new research skills. \n(Please note that this project is for adults only. The historical records use outdated terminology to describe disability and mental health conditions and may also contain material that some people may find distressing. This will be discussed during the session.) \nPlease sign up using the volunteer platform Better Impact \n

SUMMARY:Farming and nature talk: trees in the farmed landscape
DESCRIPTION:This winter we are holding a series of evening talks with the theme of examining the links between farming and nature. The talks\, held at The Moorcock Inn in Eggleston\, 7.30pm to 9pm\, are open to farmers and landowners as well as members of the public. Each evening there will be an invited speaker with the opportunity of discussion afterwards. \n“Trees in the farmed landscape”\, Wednesday 6 November\, with guest speaker Pete Leeson will cover the many aspects of working with people at all scales to bring trees back into the landscape where they can help us with farming\, water management\, biodiversity and adaptation to climate change. \nPete has been at the Woodland Trust for over 30 years. In his first 15 years at the Trust he worked as a surveyor on land and woodland acquisition – trying to build the Trust’s estate – but having gained more interest in farming and the uplands he switched roles to that of an adviser working with farmers and land managers on areas like regenerative agriculture\, wood pastures and more tree’d landscapes in Northern England. Pete also has a podcast ‘Tree Amble’: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/tree-amble/id1693567978 \nEveryone welcome\, booking required.
