SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward - Uncovering the Past Design Sprint
DESCRIPTION:The Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme’s Uncovering the Past programme is moving into its final phase. Join us and DigVentures for a design sprint workshop that will challenge project volunteers to identify and develop ideas for the future archaeology and local history projects\, using the North West Regional Research Framework. This uses the interests of local people to articulate the importance and need for any future work to be delivered. \nWe will map out the challenge\, work through possible solutions\, and come up with a working project outline together. Our professional team of archaeological project designers will take part\, helping provide realistic costs\, identify risks and potential issues\, and highlight potential fundraising opportunities. The Design Sprint will take place over one intensive day session and result with a project proposal\, including outline costs and a fundraising strategy. \nLunch and refreshments are included. \nThis will particularly suit people who have already participated in Uncovering the Past events and activities. \nBooking  is essential. \nIf you would like to take part in this and other volunteer surveys\, please sign up on our Better Impact platform.

SUMMARY:Artist workshop - remixing the sounds of the fells
DESCRIPTION:Are you an artist\, musician or creative that would like to help remix the sounds of the Fellfoot Forward area for a special public event? \nJoin us for a free full day workshop to learn skills and develop new audio-visual work to be performed at a public event later in October at Melmerby Village Hall. \nThis event is being facilitated by BlueJam Arts and Eden Valley Artistic Network\, and delivered as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme. \nThe focus for the workshop will be on sharing\, remixing and creatively responding to the diverse sounds of the Fellfoot Forward landscape\, from its rivers and streams\, to its birdsong and shifting social landscapes. Attendees will have an opportunity to remix longform recordings of the Fellfoot Forward area\, including a stunning dawn chorus collected by Fellfoot Forward artists who worked with renowned natural sound artist\, Chris Watson\, in May 2023. Watch the video of the workshop. \nYou will be supported to create new work that inspires new ways of listening to the landscape. This could be any audio-visual or performed work (predominantly sound and music but also projected images/video\, spoken word\, and creative writing). We are open and interested in a range of creative practices at the event. \nThe day will combine presentation and demonstrations\, making and creating\, informal discussion\, listening and with plenty of space for solo and collaborative development of new work. It will be a friendly and accessible event where artists/creatives are supported to feel  part of a wider community of creative practice. \nThe produced work will be showcased at an event on Sunday 22 October at Melmerby village hall featuring the creative responses to the sounds of the Fellfoot Forward landscape. Audio works will also be broadcast on Fellfoot Radio\, an online radio stream. \nPlease note spaces are limited. Register your interest by emailing BlueJam Arts. \nThe Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThis event is part of ‘Everything Changes\, Everything Stays The Same’\, the Fellfoot Forward LPS community arts project for 2023\, which has been funded by Arts Council England and Westmorland and Furness Council. \n

SUMMARY:Mapping the stars in the tarn
DESCRIPTION:We are building a small stargazing pavilion on the south-eastern side of Talkin Tarn as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme with Pons Aelius\, the designers and makers\, and Cumberland Council. \nJoin us and artist\, Dominic Smith\, for a special event creating panels for a temporary roof for the pavilion. Working with photographic panels and found natural materials the light sensitive panels will map the constellation of stars to be seen from the pavilion at the summer equinox. \nEach roof panel is made from special photographic material that changes shade according to the daylight levels at the time of its creation. Each of the nine panels will take 30 minutes to create. The roof will be installed on the pavilion at the end of the day. \nThis free event will take place outdoors\, it is accessible to all and no experience/skills are required. Drop-in at anytime during the day\, no booking required. \nThe pavilion is to be constructed in timber\, echoing ancient ‘roundhouse’ construction\, with hazel panels wrapped around the outside. All the materials used in the construction are to be sourced locally. The stargazing pavilion will be co-constructed with volunteers who will be making the hazel panels that will encase the green wood uprights and seating.

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Geological and condition survey at Long Meg
DESCRIPTION:One of Long Meg’s many mysteries is where did people\, 5\,000 years ago\, find all the stones to drag to the site? Working with a small team of geologists\, we will carefully examine all 68 of Long Meg’s Daughters and record the geological structure of each. Using this information\, we will then attempt to work out the likely sources of the stones\, and whether they may have been dumped close to the site by glaciers during the Ice Age. At the same time\, we will record any damage around each stone (eg by rabbits) and this information will be used to plan conservation work. \nVolunteers need no previous experience\, just plenty of enthusiasm to learn more about Long Meg. Professional archaeological and geological supervision will be available on both days. In order to participate in the survey\, volunteers will need to be able to walk around the site\, use a basic camera\, and complete survey forms. Background information will be provided to all participants prior to the survey. \nThe weather in late May in the Eden Valley can be gorgeously hot and sunny\, or more like midwinter. Everyone taking part should check the forecast and wear appropriate clothing. Strong waterproof boots are recommended. \nMeet in the new Long Meg car park at 10am\, finish 5pm (possibly earlier depending on speed of survey\, weather etc). Bring your own packed lunch. \nBook a place via our Better Impact volunteer database here\, if you have already registered on Better Impact. \nRegister on Better Impact here.

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Hazel panel making workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are building a small stargazing pavilion on the south-eastern side of Talkin Tarn as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme with Pons Aelius\, the designers and makers\, and Carlisle City Council. \nGreen woodworker\, Shannon Berry\, will lead the hazel panel making workshops. She is passionate about encouraging people into green woodworking and supporting the skills\, heritage and the makers that produce those products which offer a sustainable choice. During the 3-day workshops there will be a progression of knowledge and skills as the hazel panels needed for the build are made. \nYou must be 18 years or over to take part. We anticipate groups of sixteen people on each 3-day workshop. There is a camping area and local accommodation available. We will provide basic packed lunches and a hot meal in the evening. There are facilities for making hot drinks\, a fridge\, toilets\, showers and fire pit on site. All tools and equipment will be provided. We ask you to wear clothing suitable for the work and the weather with sturdy footwear. \nTo apply for the workshop\, please read more and complete the form here.

SUMMARY:Photogrammetry - training and volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Do you have an interest in the historic environment and lead mining heritage of the North Pennines and a passion about its conservation? We have an exciting opportunity to volunteer with us and be trained in photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is an important method of recording historic buildings in a relatively quick\, but highly detailed way. Using photographs to create 3D digital models allows the tracking of any changes to the condition to the building\, as well as creating a record of any important features. \nThere will be a free two-day training workshop in photogrammetry which will teach you everything you need to know about creating 3D digital models of historic structures. The dates are 3 and 4 May. This workshop will be run by Jon Bedford\, one of Historic England’s photogrammetry specialists. The first day will be based indoors where you will learn what photogrammetry is\, how it is used\, and how you can create your own models. The second day will be spent on site at a historic structure where you can put what you’ve learned into practice while still working under Jon’s supervision and guidance. \nAn optional third day in August (date tbc) will be offered to attendees of this workshop to allow you to come back to Jon with any questions or issues about the process once you’ve had a chance to practice your new skills. \nPlease note\, spaces on this workshop are only available to North Pennines volunteers who have signed up to the photogrammetry volunteering role on Better Impact here. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Lime plaster training
DESCRIPTION:A one day workshop in which participants will be introduced to how lime works in every surface and element of a traditional building\, and how that can be maintained and improved. Hands-on sessions will cover mortar mixing\, repointing masonry\, plastering\, screeding floors\, and limewashing. \nThis training is aimed at people who have an interest in using lime and building up their skills to support community heritage restoration projects within the Fellfoot Forward LPS area\, especially community volunteers involved with the restoration and/or management of community buildings in the scheme area. \nParticipants have the opportunity to present their community or own buildings as case studies that we can assess and suggest actions for. We’ll discuss the effect of inappropriate materials on old buildings; what structural detailing they need; which modern products are compatible with lime\, and best practice\, timescales/scheduling of lime-work. \nThe training will be led by Gemma Sayers\, a lime and earth plasterer with ten years experience in earth\, stone\, straw and timber construction. Her role often entails structural repair work\, installing insulation\, underfloor heating screeds\, and traditional building maintenance. SUMMARY:Improving the experiences of disabled visitors to the North Pennines
DESCRIPTION:A free online training event for tourism businesses and community groups in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This event will take place on 14 March between 10:30am – 2:30pm. (There will be a break for lunch between 1pm -1:30pm). The shorter session after lunch is an optional informal space to talk and reflect together on the training. \nThis workshop is aimed at improving the experience of disabled visitors to the area. We hope to support you to make proactive changes and to better handle unexpected situations when they arise.\nMost of our buildings are old and there are limitations on what can be done to make them physically more accessible. Yet ‘accessibility’ is so much more than lifts and ramps. For example\, 80% of disabled people have a hidden disability. \nIn this online workshop\, led by disabled trainers from Difference Northeast\, we will explore:\n– The different kinds of barriers that might be putting disabled visitors off\n– Media/mainstream attitudes to disabled people and how these might influence how we try to interact\n– How to offer help and when not to\n– Types of information to share to give people a clearer sense of what to expect. \nPlease contact scarlet@northpenninesaonb.org.uk if you have any queries. \n  \nClick here to book a free place. Places are available to book up until 1 day before the event. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n
