SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Archaeology survey day
DESCRIPTION:The Fellfoot Forward scheme’s Uncovering the Past programme continues with in-the-field activities at some of the North Pennines’ most enigmatic sites. Join us and DigVentures for a day of discovery as we explore a medieval moated site in Kirkoswald using a range of survey and remote sensing methods. \nAs a group\, you will be taught key archaeological skills in landscape survey by DigVentures’ professional archaeologists at a site close to Kirkoswald Castle and St Oswald’s Church\, about which very little is known. In this session we will:\n– Introduce the site and its possible role within the medieval village\n– Conduct a geophysical survey of the earthworks associated with the site\n– Conduct a topographic survey to record the detail of the monument \nAll tools and equipment will be provided for the surveys. Bring your own packed lunch. \nNo experience necessary\, we will teach you everything you need to know. You must be 18 years and over. All you need is a good pair of boots\, waterproofs\, and a level of fitness to spend the day outdoors on your feet in the landscape. \nBook a place via our Better Impact volunteer database here\, if you have already registered on Better Impact. \nRegister on Better Impact here.

DESCRIPTION:Join local historian and author\, Richard Brockington\, on a journey of discovery to trace the origins of the ‘lost hamlet of Appleby’. in the Fellfoot Forward scheme area \nRichard’s talk will consider evidence to establish where the hamlet might have been\, where the ancient highway that provided its name might have crossed the Raven Beck\, where the road came from\, and where it was going to. \nBooking for the talk is essential. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nThe talk precedes a volunteer survey later in April to discover more about this lost ancient road as part of the Fellfoot Forward scheme’s Uncovering the Past project later. If you would like to take part in this and other volunteer surveys\, please sign up on our Better Impact platform.

SUMMARY:Lime plaster training
DESCRIPTION:A one day workshop in which participants will be introduced to how lime works in every surface and element of a traditional building\, and how that can be maintained and improved. Hands-on sessions will cover mortar mixing\, repointing masonry\, plastering\, screeding floors\, and limewashing. \nThis training is aimed at people who have an interest in using lime and building up their skills to support community heritage restoration projects within the Fellfoot Forward LPS area\, especially community volunteers involved with the restoration and/or management of community buildings in the scheme area. \nParticipants have the opportunity to present their community or own buildings as case studies that we can assess and suggest actions for. We’ll discuss the effect of inappropriate materials on old buildings; what structural detailing they need; which modern products are compatible with lime\, and best practice\, timescales/scheduling of lime-work. \nThe training will be led by Gemma Sayers\, a lime and earth plasterer with ten years experience in earth\, stone\, straw and timber construction. Her role often entails structural repair work\, installing insulation\, underfloor heating screeds\, and traditional building maintenance. She has led many workshops as well as providing on site training and historic building consultation. Her vision is to demystify traditional building technology and empower people to get involved in the repair and construction of their buildings using natural materials. \nThe workshop will take place between 9am – 5pm at Eden Hot Lime Mortar\, Great Musgrave\, Kirkby Stephen. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Improving the experiences of disabled visitors to the North Pennines
DESCRIPTION:A free online training event for tourism businesses and community groups in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This event will take place on 14 March between 10:30am – 2:30pm. (There will be a break for lunch between 1pm -1:30pm). The shorter session after lunch is an optional informal space to talk and reflect together on the training. \nThis workshop is aimed at improving the experience of disabled visitors to the area. We hope to support you to make proactive changes and to better handle unexpected situations when they arise.\nMost of our buildings are old and there are limitations on what can be done to make them physically more accessible. Yet ‘accessibility’ is so much more than lifts and ramps. For example\, 80% of disabled people have a hidden disability. \nIn this online workshop\, led by disabled trainers from Difference Northeast\, we will explore:\n– The different kinds of barriers that might be putting disabled visitors off\n– Media/mainstream attitudes to disabled people and how these might influence how we try to interact\n– How to offer help and when not to\n– Types of information to share to give people a clearer sense of what to expect. \nPlease contact scarlet@northpenninesaonb.org.uk if you have any queries. \n  \nClick here to book a free place. Places are available to book up until 1 day before the event. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Fascinated by history? Got an adventurous streak? Bring your family for a fun day out in the Fellfoot Forward area with the DigVentures team. \nAs part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme’s Uncovering the Pastproject\, DigVentures is helping young people explore the archaeology on their doorsteps in this community excavation.
