SUMMARY:Survey for a day at Carlatton
DESCRIPTION:The Fellfoot Forward scheme and DigVentures kick off the next stage of the Uncovering the Past programme with in-the-field activities at some of the North Pennines’ most enigmatic prehistoric monuments. \nJoin us for a day of discovery as we explore the historic tumulus at Carlatton using a range of survey and remote sensing methods. As a group\, you will be taught key archaeological skills in landscape survey by DigVentures’ professional archaeologists as preparation for further exploratory fieldwork in the summer. In this session we will: \n– Undertake a condition survey of the monument\n– Conduct a geophysical survey in search of a nearby missing medieval church \nAbsolutely no experience necessary\, we will teach you everything you need to know. All you’ll need is a good pair of boots\, waterproofs\, and a level of fitness to spend the day on your feet in the landscape.

SUMMARY:The stream invites us to follow lunchtime talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Fellfoot Forward lunchtime talk – The Stream Invites Us To Follow – exploring the Eden from source to sea – on Thursday 10 February at 12.30pm via Zoom (running time approx. 1 hour). \nDick Capel made a journey over several years\, mainly on foot\, keeping company with the River Eden and some of its tributaries from source to sea. He kept a journal of copious notes as he went which eventually became a book\, ‘The Stream Invites Us To Follow’. Much like the valley itself\, this book is a meeting of the natural world\, the people who inhabit it\, their stories\, history and skills – traditional and modern. \nAs a long time countryside manager for the Eden Valley\, few people know this area quite as intimately as Dick Capel. He worked hard to protect the natural and built heritage of the area and was involved over the years in many inspirational projects\, including the Poetry Path\, Goldsworthy Sheepfolds\, Eden Benchmarks\, and Discover Eden. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England. We have developed Fellfoot Forward with local communities and organisations\, and in 2020 the scheme was awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThis is an online talk using the Zoom platform\, you will receive your link and information for logging on 24 hours before the event\, therefore booking is essential. Ticket sales open 24 December.

SUMMARY:The boot thief and the belligerent curate lunchtime talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Fellfoot Forward lunchtime local history talk – The boot thief and the belligerent curate – researching the history of Cumrew – on Thursday 27 January at 1.00pm via ZOOM (running time approx. 1 hour). \nHow do you discover more about a place and its people? Bruce Bennison will take us on a quick journey through time\, introducing the history of Cumrew and highlighting some of the methods that anyone can use to build up a picture of life in a small Fellside village over 5\,000 years. \nThe aim is to show what can be done using resources which are freely available online\, and how they can be combined with deeper research\, using the excellent facilities of local libraries and archive centres. The results can be fascinating and addictive! \nBruce Bennison is a retired local government officer living in Newbiggin\, just north of Croglin\, in the heart of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme area. Bruce has lived in the area for over 20 years. Now in retirement\, he is a valued volunteer as part of the scheme. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England. SUMMARY:Annual Forum 2021 (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Forum is an opportunity to find out about some of the recent and upcoming work of the AONB Partnership staff team and to discuss matters relating to the future well-being of our natural land cultural heritage. Last year was the first time we’ve not held the forum since 2004\, and this year we are holding an online event – there won’t be the opportunity to see some of the work in the field\, but we hope we’ll still be able to show you much of what’s going on\, albeit virtually. \nThis year there’ll be presentations on some major areas of current work – from our hugely successful peatland programme\, to ecological restoration at Estate level\, to landscape-scale nature recovery and public engagement projects\, our Farming in Protected Landscapes programme\, and some of our interpretation and education work. Though it’s a webinar format\, and sadly we won’t see you\, there’ll still be an opportunity to put questions to the team using the webinar’s Q&A function\, and dig a bit deeper into the work and its benefits and challenges. \nFor the first time this year\, we’ll be bringing in a panel from around the country to discuss the challenges we face in bringing about large-scale ecological restoration in the face of a global climate and ecological crisis. The panel will include Sarah Mukherjee (writer\, broadcaster and Chief Executive of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment); Liz Newton\, (a Director at Natural England); Steve Trotter (Chief Executive of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Vice Chair of the Partnership); Rebecca Wrigley (Chief Executive of Rewilding Britain). \nWe will have a guest panel discussion about the prospects for nature recovery in the uplands\, followed by an opportunity to join in a moderated question and answer session with the panel. \nPendlebury Award\nIn 2020 we couldn’t give out our Pendlebury Award\, celebrating a person or group that has done great work for conserving the AONB or helping people to discover what makes it special. This year we’ll be able to make the award\, which is given in memory of the Partnership’s first chair Bob Pendlebury. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Searching for life and habitable worlds in the universe
DESCRIPTION:A special event at Grassholme Observatory being led by Prof Wallace Arthur \nEvolutionary biologist and Author. Prof Wallace Arthur has dedicated his professional life to all things evolutionary and is the author of many science books – his most recent being The Biological Universe: Life in the Milky Way and beyond – published in 2020. Wallace is also a very keen astronomer – a natural progression therefore would be to consider and research the existence of extraterrestrial life elsewhere in the universe. It has to be the oldest and most profound unanswered questions. So what is the science behind all of this? And how close are we to answering that question. Come along and let Wallace begin to untangle the answers. After the talk\, you will then venture outside to actually observe stars that have known worlds orbiting them\, some of which will be Earth-like. As well as that you’ll look into the inky black moonless skies to see the Milky Way starfields and deep-sky island universes containing billions of suns. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 22-31 October 2021 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest21 #NPennDarkSkies
