DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of collecting wood crane’s-bill seeds from a site in Teesdale on 20 July 1pm to 4pm. \nWood crane’s-bill is one of the key indicator species of the best species-rich upland hay meadows. Its abundance in meadows has been reducing and collecting seeds will allow us to expand the population as we grow seedlings and plant plug plants into meadows in Teesdale. All ages are welcome; children must be supervised by an adult. \nAs part of the Tees-Swale: Naturally Connected programme\, wildflower seeds will be sown at workshops in the Autumn and the grown on into plants which can be used as part of restoring and enhancing meadows in Teesdale. \nPlease sign up using our Better Impact volunteer platform. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Spirit of place: art activity
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 5 July 10am to 1pm for a fun and friendly outdoor workshop to discover secrets of the lead mining landscape of Bollihope through drawing. \nWith guidance and demonstrations from North Pennine artist Lionel Playford we will explore ways of sketching\, not just the appearance of this heritage landscape with its fascinating history\, but something of the spirit of the place as it feels to each of us. \nA member of the North Pennines AONB team will be answering questions about what we are drawing\, the lead mining history and to help picture working life when the quarry and mines were operating. \nYou are welcome to bring your own drawing materials. There will also be a supply of sketchbooks; graphite\, charcoal and watercolour pencils available. \nThe activity will be based at Bollihope Bottoms and is suitable for ages 8+. \nImage: Lionel Playford \nTo book tickets please use the link below. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n       \nImage: Lionel Playford \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: With or Without (a camera)
DESCRIPTION:During July Bowlees Visitor Centre is hosting an exhibition of photographic images made with and without a camera\, by artist Elaine Vizor. \nElaine will exhibit vintage cameraless photography\, cyanotype prints\, and both original and digital artworks. The traditional vintage cyanotype process is the oldest form of photography dating back to 1842. Cyanotype printing was used for botanical printing by early photographer and botanical artist\, Anna Atkins\, and Elaine uses botanical species for prints\, particularly ferns which are abundant in this area. \nThe original digital art pieces on show\, depicting Teesdale scenes\, are images transformed into ‘artlike’ pieces using modern digital tools. \nElaine works as a freelance photographer\, delivering occasional workshops in digital photography for beginners; photography walks and also cyanotype workshops. In bringing together the vintage and the modern\, Elaine is bringing photography full circle from its very origins to its most modern contemporary form. \nThe title With or Without (a camera) comes from Elaine’s love of photography and\, equally\, a cup of tea\, so it is a play on the quintessentially British question\, ‘how do you like your tea\, with or without? \nOpen during visitor centre opening hours (daily 10am to 5pm). Not wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:National Meadows Day at Low Way Farm - family event
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 1 July 10am to 3pm for a day celebrating the magnificent meadows and farming history of Teesdale. The North Pennines AONB contains almost half of the remaining species-rich upland hay meadows in the UK. As well as being a rare and important habitat for wildflowers\, upland hay meadows also support a whole range of invertebrates and birds. \nHigh Nature Value farming practices in the uplands mean that many of these meadows are being managed in much the same way that they have been for generations. These farming practices protect the unique habitats of the North Pennines whilst also producing high quality food. Whilst the management regime of meadows is similar now to 200 years ago\, the machinery available to farmers has changed beyond all recognition from scythes to large tractors and mowers\, and from handmade pikes of hay to modern balers. \nWe want to celebrate this important habitat and its cultural history with a variety of fun activities suitable for all ages. There is no need to book\, come along and take part in activities: \n\ndisplay of farming machinery old and new\ndisplay of machinery used for meadow restoration\nbotany walk around the meadows\nart and craft activities\na closer look at the special species of plants through a microscope\ndisplay of typical upland hay meadow species grown from hand-collected local seed\nmeadow restoration talk\ndisplay of historic hay-time photographs\n\nDelicious tea and scones will be on sale made by the Farmhouse Kitchen. \nLocation : Low Way Farm\, Holwick.\nCar parking available\, access from road the towards Holwick (follow signs for The Farmhouse Kitchen) ///addicted.proven.encloses \nOr \nAccess on foot from Middleton or Bowlees via Pennine way: ///dark.releasing.going \n  \n

SUMMARY:Adult activity: Killhope felting workshop
DESCRIPTION:The felting workshop on 28 June 10am to 3.30pm will provide an opportunity for a small group of adults (18+) to explore the mining museum and create a piece of felt art work based on the beautiful display of Victorian spa boxes onsite. These were created by miners as a way of displaying the unusual rocks and crystals they gathered. Workshop participants will gather lead ore and minerals from the washing floor and incorporate these in a highly textured piece of 3D felt artwork. This artwork will be created using a technique called Shibori where objects are tied into the fabric and revealed as it is cut open. \nPlease use the link below to book. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:A day at Hannah's Meadow
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Hannah’s Meadow to explore the extraordinary life of Hannah Hauxwell. Hannah was a farmer whose life on remote Low Birk Hatt farm in Baldersdale has become part of the very fabric of the North Pennines. \nExplore where Hannah lived\, see the wildflower meadows\, enjoy a theatre production illustrating her life\, and see part of the Hannah Hauxwell collection from the Fitzhugh Library that documents her life and times. \nThere will be a performance of “No Through Road”\, by Shelagh McKay Jones and Karen McDonnell\, a delightfully thought-provoking mix of spoken word\, song and visual imagery illustrating Hannah’s struggle with the elements through her life-enhancing and uplifting story. \nIn the afternoon\, a guided walk by landowner Michelle Hurley\, and Molly Jones\, Farming Support Officer from the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, will explore Hannah’s former farm. We will walk around Hannah’s Meadow and up to the Durham Wildlife Trust interpretation barn\, looking at common meadow wildflowers and talking about meadow management practices that continue in many of our remaining upland hay meadows today. \nPlease bring your own picnic lunch. Tea and scones will be on sale from the farm. Parking details and joining instructions will be sent to ticket holders before the event. Please book using the link below. \nDogs are not allowed at this event. SUMMARY:Nenthead community tapestry
DESCRIPTION:Join us to design and construct a community tapestry to represent the local landscape and its unique connection with the mining heritage that shaped it. During June we will meet each Monday at Nenthead Village Hall to celebrate the unique landscape\, nature\, infrastructure and geology\, as well as those who lived\, worked and mined here. The finished tapestry will be a visual representation of the places\, people and stories we encounter as we travel back into Nenthead’s past. \nYou don’t have to be an expert – just come along for a cuppa and a chat if you like. All are welcome\, but children must be supervised by an adult. \nTo book please use the link below. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n           \n  \n
