SUMMARY:Saturday stroll - a guided walk - rooted in lead
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a gentle three-mile Saturday stroll through the remarkable lead mining landscape of Allenheads on 30 May\, at 10.30am to 1pm. This creative walk is led by artist Carole McCourt and offers a relaxed way to explore heritage\, ecology and the stories shaped by centuries of mining. \nStarting in the village square we will walk past the old blacksmith’s shop before heading into the quiet woodland paths that lead towards Pease Meadows. Here\, we pause to look closely at the extraordinary lead tolerant flowers that thrive in soils shaped by the area’s industrial past. These small but resilient plants are central to the Rooted in Lead project\, and the walk offers a chance to learn how they survive and what they can tell us about the history beneath our feet. \nThe route continues to the Mine Shop\, the former mine yard and the Bousteads\, where the landscape still carries the marks of the people who lived and worked here. Along the way\, we explore how mining shaped the village\, the land and the unique habitats that remain today.\nThis is a steady\, welcoming walk suitable for most abilities\, with plenty of time for conversation\, creative looking and shared discovery. \nPlease wear suitable footwear and weather appropriate clothing. Free refreshments will be available after the walk. \nAll ages are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult and must be able to walk or be carried as the paths may not be suitable for pushchairs). Well behaved dogs on a short lead are welcome. \nOptional donation – suggested amount £3. Your donation enables the North Pennines National Landscape team to protect and restore this special place and help people connect with nature. \nPlease use the Ticketsource link to book. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n     \nThis event is part of North Pennines NatureFest running from Saturday 23 May to Sunday 7 June 2026. SUMMARY:Guided nature walk
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the Weardale Wildlife Group for this guided walk along the river in Upper Teesdale – from Low to High Force and back on Saturday 23 May\, 10.30am to 1.30pm. \nFrom Bowlees Visitor Centre the walk is two miles (3.2km) to High Force\, via Low Force\, so a four mile (6.4km) round trip. The route does cross the Wynch Bridge (which is quite narrow) at Low Force waterfall and parts of the route are very rocky. No dogs please. SUMMARY:BeeWalk training with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust - Teesdale pollinator surveying
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for adult volunteers to take part in BeeWalks.  We are offering a free one-day training course\, for both beginners and those with experience\, to learn about the identification of all 24 British bumblebees. \nThe course takes place on 14 May from 9.30am to 4pm\, at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning and along the Pennine Way in the afternoon.  The walks and training follow the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s (BCT) survey methodology and training will include information on the national BeeWalk scheme. \nEach BeeWalk would be approximately 1 to 2 km long\, encompassing a variety of habitats including a selection of upland hay meadows\, woodland\, or roadside verges.  The BeeWalks take place from May to September\, bi-weekly\, and can be carried out individually or paired with another volunteer. The aim is to monitor a selection of meadows pre- and post-restoration to see the impacts upon pollinator abundance\, whilst also adding vital data to a countrywide programme run by the BCT. The BeeWalks will be coordinated by a member of the Tees-Swale Farming and Nature Team. \nTraining will be undertaken by Andy Benson\, Skills for BeeWalk project manager at the Bumblebee Conversation Trust. \nPlease contact Harry for more information: harry@northpennines.org.uk.\nPlease sign up using our Better Impact volunteer system  \n

SUMMARY:Why are the North Pennines so high? A geology talk
DESCRIPTION:Why are the North Pennines so high? The answer lies in the rocks. Find out more in this talk by geologist Charlie Bendall on 7 May\, 6pm to 7.30pm at Bowlees Visitor Centre. \nThe North Pennines have the seven highest hilltops in the Pennines and more ground over 600m (2000ft) than the rest of the Pennines combined. There are sound geological reasons why this is so that will be explored in this talk. \nThis is one of three talks being given by Charlie Bendall as he walks the Pennine Way again to celebrate the release of his book\, “Pennine Way: A Geological Companion”. \nThis is a free event but space is limited so please book using the link below. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nNote: This event is led by an external speaker and views expressed are their own.

SUMMARY:Archaeological landscape surveys - volunteer opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how Archaeologists map their finds and sites? \nThe answer is archaeological surveying\, an important aspect of archaeological fieldwork that records the footprint\, profile\, and location of a site\, as well as the location of any important artefacts discovered. \nFacilitated by Elder Archaeology\, there are volunteer opportunities to help survey mining sites in the Alston Moor area. \nThere are a total of 15 volunteer days across three weeks starting Tuesday 10 March\, 10am to 3pm. Volunteers can register for any day\, and any number of days. Dates in March are 10-14\, 17-21 and 24-28. Ideally suited for 18+. \nAs a volunteer you will help conduct these surveys in a variety of ways\, utilising technology such as laser scanners\, global positioning systems\, and drones. As well as more basic technology\, such as dumpy levels\, measuring tapes\, and drawing implements. Training will be provided by experts from Elder Archaeology. \nPlease sign up using the system Better Impact  \nFuture opportunities. \nOver the next two years there will be two month-long opportunities to participate in archaeological surveying on sites in the North Pennines National Landscape and UNESCO Geopark as part of the Land of Lead and Silver project. Elder Archaeology CIC will provide instructions and guidance as you compile your own surveys across these sites. No experience is required\, and all equipment will be provided\, however it will require lots of walking across uneven moorland in inclement weather\, so warm and waterproof clothing is strongly recommended.
