SUMMARY:Saturday stroll - Middleton-in-Teesdale
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk around the historic town of Middleton-in-Teesdale on Saturday 30th September 10am to 2:30pm. During the 19th Century Middleton-in-Teesdale housed the headquarters to the London Lead Company\, one of the largest lead mining companies working in the North Pennines Ore Field. On this short walk we will explore which areas were formed by the company and how the town was shaped by the lead mining industry. \nSaturday strolls are designed for anyone who may not feel confident accessing the outdoors or would like more advice about getting out walking\, but anyone at any experience level is welcome to join. All ages are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult and must be able to walk or be carried as the paths may not be suitable for pushchairs). Well behaved dogs on a short lead are welcome. The walks will be approximately 3 miles in length on mostly flat ground and with rest breaks along the way. \nFor each walk you will need to bring sturdy boots or shoes (walking boots or trainers with good grip are best)\, warm layers\, and a waterproof jacket. You may also want to bring a drink and a snack. \nPlease book using the link below. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Volunteer activity: pulling spruce to save peat
DESCRIPTION:We are taking action for our precious peatlands with a volunteer day removing invasive tree saplings from a restored blanket bog. \nJoin us to help protect our peatlands\, as we spend remove Sitka spruce saplings which have self-seeded on an area of blanket bog. If these are left to grow\, their roots will take up water and dry out the peat\, damaging it and reversing the benefits of the restoration work. Peat is our biggest asset in the fight to tackle climate change – we’d like to keep this area of bog continuing on its journey to be fully recovered\, healthy\, waterlogged\, and doing its job to take in and store harmful carbon dioxide. \nWe will be working at Flow Moss\, near Allendale\, in the Northumberland part of the North Pennines AONB\, pulling saplings out of the ground or cutting them at the base using handsaws. Gloves and all other equipment will be provided. It’s an easy 10-15 minute walk along a footpath to reach the site\, then wet\, boggy\, uneven ground once there. Everyone is welcome\, but under 18s need to be accompanied by an adult. The level of activity is of a moderate nature. Please note there are no toilet facilities at the site. \nBring a packed lunch and water\, clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and terrain. Parking location and access information will be provided nearer the time as this is subject to change depending on the number of volunteers taking part. \nFor more information\, please contact clementine@northpenninesaonb.org.uk\, 07407 856790 \nYou can register as a volunteer and sign up for this activity using our volunteer system\, Better Impact. \nThis is a rescheduled event. It was originally planned for Bog Day in July but this was cancelled due to bad weather. \n

SUMMARY:Artist workshop - remixing the sounds of the fells
DESCRIPTION:Are you an artist\, musician or creative that would like to help remix the sounds of the Fellfoot Forward area for a special public event? \nJoin us for a free full day workshop to learn skills and develop new audio-visual work to be performed at a public event later in October at Melmerby Village Hall. \nThis event is being facilitated by BlueJam Arts and Eden Valley Artistic Network\, and delivered as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme. \nThe focus for the workshop will be on sharing\, remixing and creatively responding to the diverse sounds of the Fellfoot Forward landscape\, from its rivers and streams\, to its birdsong and shifting social landscapes. Attendees will have an opportunity to remix longform recordings of the Fellfoot Forward area\, including a stunning dawn chorus collected by Fellfoot Forward artists who worked with renowned natural sound artist\, Chris Watson\, in May 2023. Watch the video of the workshop. \nYou will be supported to create new work that inspires new ways of listening to the landscape. This could be any audio-visual or performed work (predominantly sound and music but also projected images/video\, spoken word\, and creative writing). We are open and interested in a range of creative practices at the event. \nThe day will combine presentation and demonstrations\, making and creating\, informal discussion\, listening and with plenty of space for solo and collaborative development of new work. It will be a friendly and accessible event where artists/creatives are supported to feel  part of a wider community of creative practice. \nThe produced work will be showcased at an event on Sunday 22 October at Melmerby village hall featuring the creative responses to the sounds of the Fellfoot Forward landscape. Audio works will also be broadcast on Fellfoot Radio\, an online radio stream. \nPlease note spaces are limited. Register your interest by emailing BlueJam Arts. \nThe Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThis event is part of ‘Everything Changes\, Everything Stays The Same’\, the Fellfoot Forward LPS community arts project for 2023\, which has been funded by Arts Council England and Westmorland and Furness Council. \n

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward - Uncovering the Past Design Sprint
DESCRIPTION:The Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme’s Uncovering the Past programme is moving into its final phase. Join us and DigVentures for a design sprint workshop that will challenge project volunteers to identify and develop ideas for the future archaeology and local history projects\, using the North West Regional Research Framework. This uses the interests of local people to articulate the importance and need for any future work to be delivered. \nWe will map out the challenge\, work through possible solutions\, and come up with a working project outline together. Our professional team of archaeological project designers will take part\, helping provide realistic costs\, identify risks and potential issues\, and highlight potential fundraising opportunities. The Design Sprint will take place over one intensive day session and result with a project proposal\, including outline costs and a fundraising strategy. \nLunch and refreshments are included. \nThis will particularly suit people who have already participated in Uncovering the Past events and activities. \nBooking  is essential. \nIf you would like to take part in this and other volunteer surveys\, please sign up on our Better Impact platform.

SUMMARY:Bugs\, bats\, birds and bloody light pollution
DESCRIPTION:**Cancelled due to Storm Babet weather warning** \nWe know that light pollution makes it difficult for us to see the wonders of the night sky in all of their glory\, but what does it do to our health\, and how does it impact the natural world. Join Dr Martin Kitching\, Director of Northern Experience Wildlife Tours\, to delve into the murky world of twilight and beyond. \nAfter Martin’s talk (and if the sky is clear) we will do some informal stargazing at the Bowlees Dark Sky Discovery Site. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one). No dogs please – they’re a trip hazard in the dark. The walk from the car park to the visitor centre is unlit and follows an uneven path/stone steps – a torch is essential. \nPre-booking is essential. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 20 October to 5 November 2023 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest23 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Stargazing experience at High Force waterfall
DESCRIPTION:**Note that there are two further sessions on this date: 8.30 to 10.30pm; and 9.45 to 11.45pm. If when you visit the Star Safari booking website you can’t see one of these time slots that means they are fully booked and have been hidden from view.** \nEnjoy a night under the stars\, at a very special place. High Force is the largest waterfall in the country\, and is an awesome spectacle at any time of the day. At night\, though\, it is a special place you will remember for the rest of your life. \nThe Star Safaris team will meet at the High Force Hotel\, for an indoor briefing and presentation\, before walking down to the waterfall together. On the way\, you will learn about the unique landscape and what makes it so special as a dark sky site. The skies above the waterfall are among the darkest in Europe\, and the surrounding cliffs ensure a truly dark experience. Your guide will light the waterfall up\, so you will be able to take selfies and other photographs with your phone. \nIf the sky is clear\, we will go dark as quickly as possible and start looking at the night sky. This will be done as a group experience\, by a guide\, with a laser pointer. Unlike observatory events\, you won’t spend your time queueing for a telescope. When conditions are especially clear\, we may use astronomy binoculars. \nYou will leave the event with a greater knowledge of the night sky\, and how to find key objects and constellations on your own. More than that\, though\, you will have spent some time in the dark at a spectacular natural location\, which is normally only accessible in daylight. \nUnfortunately\, because of limited space at the location\, do not bring camera tripods\, or dogs. Bring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one). \nPre-booking is essential via https://www.starsafaris.com/highforce \nThis event run by Star Safaris is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 20 October to 5 November 2023 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest23 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Jupiter and Saturn – the giant planets
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 27 October 8pm to 11pm  as on these dark starry nights\, we are treated to a planetary delight as these 2 celestial heavyweights line up for our telescopes. \nJupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and could swallow ~1300 Earths\, this gas giant planet is a turbulent environment as it spins on its axis once every 9.5 hours – this makes it the fastest rotating object in our solar system. Due to this exceptional rotational period\, Jupiter has a very turbulent surface with high-speed winds whipping its surface up into a visual drama on a cosmic scale. With bands and belts\, transition regions\, and big red spots\, Jupiter has it all\, and Grassholme Observatory has the kit to bring it alive. \nNext is by far most people’s favourite. Saturn with its glorious ring system dazzles the observer with a veritable observing feast! \nGet wrapped up – it can get chilly when we are outside! This is a pet free event\, so please don’t bring any furry friends! \nVisit https://www.grassholmeobservatory.com/book to book and for full terms and conditions. \nAdult: £24/ Concessions: £21/ Adult: 16+/ Concession: 65+\, under 16 years or Blue Badge holder.
