SUMMARY:Volunteer activity: pulling spruce to save peat
DESCRIPTION:We are taking action for our precious peatlands with a volunteer day removing invasive tree saplings from a restored blanket bog. \nJoin us to help protect our peatlands\, as we spend remove Sitka spruce saplings which have self-seeded on an area of blanket bog. If these are left to grow\, their roots will take up water and dry out the peat\, damaging it and reversing the benefits of the restoration work. Peat is our biggest asset in the fight to tackle climate change – we’d like to keep this area of bog continuing on its journey to be fully recovered\, healthy\, waterlogged\, and doing its job to take in and store harmful carbon dioxide. \nWe will be working at Flow Moss\, near Allendale\, in the Northumberland part of the North Pennines AONB\, pulling saplings out of the ground or cutting them at the base using handsaws. Gloves and all other equipment will be provided. It’s an easy 10-15 minute walk along a footpath to reach the site\, then wet\, boggy\, uneven ground once there. Everyone is welcome\, but under 18s need to be accompanied by an adult. The level of activity is of a moderate nature. Please note there are no toilet facilities at the site. \nBring a packed lunch and water\, clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and terrain. Parking location and access information will be provided nearer the time as this is subject to change depending on the number of volunteers taking part. \nFor more information\, please contact clementine@northpenninesaonb.org.uk\, 07407 856790 \nYou can register as a volunteer and sign up for this activity using our volunteer system\, Better Impact. \nThis is a rescheduled event. It was originally planned for Bog Day in July but this was cancelled due to bad weather. \n

SUMMARY:Discover nocturnal nature in Teesdale
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening discovering some of the nocturnal creatures that fly around Bowlees Visitor Centre at night. \nCome and be a bat detective using our bat detectors to tune into their echolocation. We will be dissecting owl pellets to discover the skeletons of their prey and what that tells us about the ecosystem the owls are a part of. \nIf the weather is warm enough\, we’ll take a closer look at the magnificent markings on the many moth species that live here\, and learn some of their weird and wonderful names. \nHot drinks and equipment including head torches provided. Wrap up warm and wear comfortable footwear as we’ll be venturing outside for a short bat walk. \nThis event is suitable for families with children over the age of five years. Please book using the link below. Younger siblings are welcome and do not need to book. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n \nDelivered as part of the Tees-Swale: Naturally Connected programme. Tees-Swale is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership in collaboration with the Yorkshire Dales National Park. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bugs\, bats\, birds and bloody light pollution
DESCRIPTION:**Cancelled due to Storm Babet weather warning** \nWe know that light pollution makes it difficult for us to see the wonders of the night sky in all of their glory\, but what does it do to our health\, and how does it impact the natural world. Join Dr Martin Kitching\, Director of Northern Experience Wildlife Tours\, to delve into the murky world of twilight and beyond. \nAfter Martin’s talk (and if the sky is clear) we will do some informal stargazing at the Bowlees Dark Sky Discovery Site. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one). No dogs please – they’re a trip hazard in the dark. The walk from the car park to the visitor centre is unlit and follows an uneven path/stone steps – a torch is essential. \nPre-booking is essential. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 20 October to 5 November 2023 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest23 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Stargazing experience at High Force waterfall
DESCRIPTION:**Note that there are two further sessions on this date: 8.30 to 10.30pm; and 9.45 to 11.45pm. If when you visit the Star Safari booking website you can’t see one of these time slots that means they are fully booked and have been hidden from view.** \nEnjoy a night under the stars\, at a very special place. High Force is the largest waterfall in the country\, and is an awesome spectacle at any time of the day. At night\, though\, it is a special place you will remember for the rest of your life. \nThe Star Safaris team will meet at the High Force Hotel\, for an indoor briefing and presentation\, before walking down to the waterfall together. On the way\, you will learn about the unique landscape and what makes it so special as a dark sky site. The skies above the waterfall are among the darkest in Europe\, and the surrounding cliffs ensure a truly dark experience. Your guide will light the waterfall up\, so you will be able to take selfies and other photographs with your phone. \nIf the sky is clear\, we will go dark as quickly as possible and start looking at the night sky. This will be done as a group experience\, by a guide\, with a laser pointer. Unlike observatory events\, you won’t spend your time queueing for a telescope. When conditions are especially clear\, we may use astronomy binoculars. \nYou will leave the event with a greater knowledge of the night sky\, and how to find key objects and constellations on your own. More than that\, though\, you will have spent some time in the dark at a spectacular natural location\, which is normally only accessible in daylight. \nUnfortunately\, because of limited space at the location\, do not bring camera tripods\, or dogs. Bring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one). \nPre-booking is essential via https://www.starsafaris.com/highforce \nThis event run by Star Safaris is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 20 October to 5 November 2023 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest23 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Stargazing experience at High Force waterfall
DESCRIPTION:FULLY BOOKED… FULLY BOOKED… FULLY BOOKED… FULLY BOOKED… \n**Note that there is another session on this date: 7.15 to 9.15pm. \nPre-booking is essential via https://www.starsafaris.com/highforce \nIf the sky is clear\, we will go dark as quickly as possible and start looking at the night sky. \nThis event run by Star Safaris is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 20 October to 5 November 2023 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest23 #NPennDarkSkies \n

SUMMARY:BeeWalk training with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust - Teesdale pollinator surveying
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for adult volunteers to undertake BeeWalks in the area and we’re offering a free one-day training course\, for both beginners and those with experience\, to learn about the identification of all 24 British bumblebees. \nThe course takes place on 16 May from 9.30am to 4.30pm\, at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning and along the Pennine Way in the afternoon.  The walks and training follow the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s (BCT) survey methodology and training will include information on the national BeeWalk scheme. \nEach BeeWalk would be approximately 1 to 2 km long\, encompassing a variety of habitats including a selection of upland hay meadows\, woodland\, or roadside verges.  The BeeWalks take place from May to September\, bi-weekly\, and can be carried out individually or paired with another volunteer. The aim is to monitor a selection of meadows pre- and post-restoration to see the impacts upon pollinator abundance\, whilst also adding vital data to a countrywide programme run by the BCT. The BeeWalks will be coordinated by a member of the Tees-Swale Farming and Nature Team. \nContact Molly for more information: molly@northpenninesaonb.org.uk.\nPlease sign up using our Better Impact volunteer system  \n

SUMMARY:Mining heritage condition assessment training
DESCRIPTION:Do you have an interest in the historic environment and lead mining heritage of the North Pennines and a passion about its conservation? We have an exciting volunteer opportunity to be trained in surveying and assessing the condition of these historic monuments. \nCondition assessment is an important part of protecting the past as it helps us to understand how the sites might be deteriorating over time and what threats there might be. The information gained during these assessments will be passed on to Historic England for them to monitor and consider for future consolidation works. \nIn this workshop you will learn about the threats that can be present on historic sites\, as well as how to record them accurately to help safeguard their future. All equipment will be provided. \nThis day will be spent outdoors\, location to be confirmed. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear walking boots. You will also need to bring a packed lunch\, and sufficient water to last you the day. \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact volunteer platform. \n  \n
