SUMMARY:Leaded stained glass workshop
DESCRIPTION:Come along and try the heritage craft of leaded glass panel making on 28 March\, 10am to 4pm\, at Rookhope Village Hall.  In this workshop\, led by Green Ginger Glass\, you will be taught how to cut coloured and textured glass to the pattern supplied by your tutor and create an A5 Art Deco sunrise design panel. You will then bind the pieces of glass together and lead solder the joints to join and finish off the panel. \nYou will also learn about one of the practical uses for lead and why the presence of this metal in the North Pennines created an enormous industry in the past. Due to working with lead in this workshop please let us know at the point of booking if you are pregnant\, or suspect you may be as we will require additional health & safety precautions for you to take part. The workshop is suitable for ages 18+. \nWe are offering 2 bursary places for this course making it free as opposed to the cost of £30. There is no strict criteria for these places\, they are available for anyone for whom the cost is prohibitive. To request a bursary place please email rebecca@northpennines.org.uk.  \nTo book please use the Ticketsource link \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n         \n  \n  \n  \nImage credit – Gil McGinley \n

SUMMARY:BeeWalk training with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust - Teesdale pollinator surveying
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for adult volunteers to undertake BeeWalks in the area and we’re offering a free one-day training course\, for both beginners and those with experience\, to learn about the identification of all 24 British bumblebees. \nThe course takes place on 16 May from 9.30am to 4.30pm\, at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning and along the Pennine Way in the afternoon.  The walks and training follow the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s (BCT) survey methodology and training will include information on the national BeeWalk scheme. \nEach BeeWalk would be approximately 1 to 2 km long\, encompassing a variety of habitats including a selection of upland hay meadows\, woodland\, or roadside verges.  The BeeWalks take place from May to September\, bi-weekly\, and can be carried out individually or paired with another volunteer. The aim is to monitor a selection of meadows pre- and post-restoration to see the impacts upon pollinator abundance\, whilst also adding vital data to a countrywide programme run by the BCT. The BeeWalks will be coordinated by a member of the Tees-Swale Farming and Nature Team. \nContact Molly for more information: molly@northpenninesaonb.org.uk.\nPlease sign up using our Better Impact volunteer system  \n

SUMMARY:Mining heritage condition assessment training
DESCRIPTION:Do you have an interest in the historic environment and lead mining heritage of the North Pennines and a passion about its conservation? We have an exciting volunteer opportunity to be trained in surveying and assessing the condition of these historic monuments. \nCondition assessment is an important part of protecting the past as it helps us to understand how the sites might be deteriorating over time and what threats there might be. The information gained during these assessments will be passed on to Historic England for them to monitor and consider for future consolidation works. \nIn this workshop you will learn about the threats that can be present on historic sites\, as well as how to record them accurately to help safeguard their future. All equipment will be provided. \nThis day will be spent outdoors\, location to be confirmed. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear walking boots. You will also need to bring a packed lunch\, and sufficient water to last you the day. \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact volunteer platform. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Wild Wednesday - making bug hotels
DESCRIPTION:Wild Wednesdays are activities suitable for children aged five and over to enjoy and be creative. \nCome and help us in this family friendly session to rebuild our bug hotel at Bowlees Visitor Centre on 29 May\, 2.30pm to 4pm. ‘Buggingham Palace’ is in great need of some renovation. Younger siblings also welcome but no need to book. All children must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. £2 per child. Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather. \nPlease use the Ticketsource link to book. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n \n  \nDelivered as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme. SUMMARY:Woodland ground flora seed collecting
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday 31 May\, 10am to 1pm to collect the seeds of woodland ground flora plants such as bluebells\, wild garlic and wood anemone from populations in Deepdale Wood Nature Reserve near Barnard Castle. \nThese spring flowering\, woodland plants are very important food sources for our wildlife as it emerges from winter hibernation. \nAs part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme we are collecting seed from these plants to grow on and plant into recently created woodlands across Teesdale which currently lack a diverse assemblage of nectar rich plant species. \nWe aim to monitor and trial the success of introducing these plants into newly created woodlands\, hopefully contributing to self-sustaining woodland ecosystems capable of supporting greater biodiversity. \nThis is a family friendly volunteering opportunity. All children must be supervised by an adult. \nPlease use the Better Impact link to sign up. \n
