SUMMARY:Our country lives - art installation
DESCRIPTION:‘Our Country Lives’ is an outdoor art installation at Bowlees Visitor Centre in Teesdale. Produced by Joanne Coates\, it is a culmination of over 50 young people’s work to explore issues that are important to them through photography\, collage\, writing and drawing. \nThe resulting work is a unique insight into the everyday life of young people in rural communities. It offers a rare glimpse through the eyes of the youth. The participants were encouraged to make pictures of what is important to them. Joanne is an award-winning artist based in the rural north of England\, her work focuses on rurality and class. \nPhotographs taken by participants in the project have been printed on mesh and strung between trees. The technique allows natural light to filter through the images. The installation will be on-site from Saturday 23 April to Tuesday 21 June at Bowlees Visitor Centre. Car parking is available at Bowlees. For more information on the centre’s opening times and facilities please see our website. \nWith thanks to the landowner Raby Estates. Thanks also to the co-creators from Bowes Hutchinson Primary School\, Cotherstone Primary School\, Teesdale Secondary School and Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services Youth Club. \nShare your thoughts and pictures through our social media channels using #OurCountryLives\, #TeesSwale and #northpenninesaonb \nProduced as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme. Tees-Swale is delivered by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Managed by Beam\, Creatively Connected is supported using public funding by The National Lottery through Arts Council England. \n

SUMMARY:Swaledale Gates - art installation
DESCRIPTION:‘Swaledale Gates’ is an outdoor art installation at Muker meadows\, Swaledale. Produced by artist Abre Etteh\, working with young people from in and around Swaledale. Inspired by the area’s characteristic drystone walls\, it explores the connection between people and place. Abre is an artist and architect focused on sculpture and installation\, using themes of belonging and the land. \nWooden looms have been hand-woven using wool to reflect the colours of the Swaledale landscape and to celebrate the effort it takes to create and maintain communities. The looms are erected over drystone walls in Muker meadows and some of the tapestries remain unfinished\, offering visitors the opportunity to add to this communally produced artwork. \nThe outdoor installation is free to visit and will be on-site from 18 to 24 April 2022 – Grid Reference: SD910983. Please park responsibly in the village. The meadows are protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the area is actively farmed to provide a crop of hay to feed animals. Please respect the countryside and keep to footpaths. \nWith thanks to the farmer and landowner Adam Hunter. Thanks also to the co-creators from The Rydal Academy (Darlington)\, Burneston Primary School (Bedale)\, Applegarth Primary School (Northallerton) and Carers Plus (young carer group\, Northallerton). \nShare your thoughts and pictures through our social media channels using #SwaledaleGates\, #TeesSwale and #yorkshiredales \nProduced as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme. SUMMARY:The stream invites us to follow lunchtime talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Fellfoot Forward lunchtime talk – The Stream Invites Us To Follow – exploring the Eden from source to sea – on Thursday 10 February at 12.30pm via Zoom (running time approx. 1 hour). \nDick Capel made a journey over several years\, mainly on foot\, keeping company with the River Eden and some of its tributaries from source to sea. He kept a journal of copious notes as he went which eventually became a book\, ‘The Stream Invites Us To Follow’. Much like the valley itself\, this book is a meeting of the natural world\, the people who inhabit it\, their stories\, history and skills – traditional and modern. \nAs a long time countryside manager for the Eden Valley\, few people know this area quite as intimately as Dick Capel. He worked hard to protect the natural and built heritage of the area and was involved over the years in many inspirational projects\, including the Poetry Path\, Goldsworthy Sheepfolds\, Eden Benchmarks\, and Discover Eden. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England. We have developed Fellfoot Forward with local communities and organisations\, and in 2020 the scheme was awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThis is an online talk using the Zoom platform\, you will receive your link and information for logging on 24 hours before the event\, therefore booking is essential. Ticket sales open 24 December.

SUMMARY:The boot thief and the belligerent curate lunchtime talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Fellfoot Forward lunchtime local history talk – The boot thief and the belligerent curate – researching the history of Cumrew – on Thursday 27 January at 1.00pm via ZOOM (running time approx. 1 hour). \nHow do you discover more about a place and its people? Bruce Bennison will take us on a quick journey through time\, introducing the history of Cumrew and highlighting some of the methods that anyone can use to build up a picture of life in a small Fellside village over 5\,000 years. \nThe aim is to show what can be done using resources which are freely available online\, and how they can be combined with deeper research\, using the excellent facilities of local libraries and archive centres. The results can be fascinating and addictive! \nBruce Bennison is a retired local government officer living in Newbiggin\, just north of Croglin\, in the heart of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme area. Bruce has lived in the area for over 20 years. Now in retirement\, he is a valued volunteer as part of the scheme. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England.
