SUMMARY:Improving the experiences of disabled visitors to the North Pennines
DESCRIPTION:A free online training event for tourism businesses and community groups in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This event will take place on 14 March between 10:30am – 2:30pm. (There will be a break for lunch between 1pm -1:30pm). The shorter session after lunch is an optional informal space to talk and reflect together on the training. \nThis workshop is aimed at improving the experience of disabled visitors to the area. We hope to support you to make proactive changes and to better handle unexpected situations when they arise.\nMost of our buildings are old and there are limitations on what can be done to make them physically more accessible. Yet ‘accessibility’ is so much more than lifts and ramps. For example\, 80% of disabled people have a hidden disability. \nIn this online workshop\, led by disabled trainers from Difference Northeast\, we will explore:\n– The different kinds of barriers that might be putting disabled visitors off\n– Media/mainstream attitudes to disabled people and how these might influence how we try to interact\n– How to offer help and when not to\n– Types of information to share to give people a clearer sense of what to expect. \nPlease contact scarlet@northpenninesaonb.org.uk if you have any queries. \n  \nClick here to book a free place. Places are available to book up until 1 day before the event. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Stars in the tarn launch 4 March
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch event of the ‘Stars in the tarn’ project where you can meet the team of designers\, makers\, and crafts people\, discuss the design of the stargazing pavilion\, and find out about your opportunities to get involved. \nDark skies are a key characteristic of the Fellfoot Forward area’s heritage and Carlisle City Council are keen to protect the dark skies at Talkin Tarn in support of wildlife\, dark sky events\, and to gain designation as a Dark Sky Discovery Site. \nWe have commissioned a stargazing pavilion at Talkin Tarn\, which will encourage people to use the site for stargazing and which can also be used during the daytime as a space for reflection. The stargazing pavilion draws upon the history and materials used in traditional round house construction to bring a new place to rest\, reflect and look up. \nThis is a drop-in event at Talkin Tarn education cabin between 10am – 2pm. All are welcome\, no booking required.

SUMMARY:Saturday stroll - Nenthead
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a gentle walk at a relaxed pace on the last Saturday of each month. The first walk will be from Nenthead on 25 February starting at 10.30am and finishing at approximately 1pm. Following the walk you are welcome to join us at the Hive café to chat\, whilst having free teas; coffees and cakes\, about what we’ve seen and experienced on the walk. \nSaturday strolls are designed for anyone who may not feel confident accessing the outdoors or would like more advice about getting out walking\, but anyone at any experience level is welcome to join. All ages are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult and must be able to walk or be carried as the paths may not be suitable for pushchairs). Well behaved dogs on a short lead are welcome. \nFor each walk you will need to bring sturdy boots or shoes (walking boots or trainers with good grip are best)\, warm layers\, and a waterproof jacket. You may also want to bring a drink and a snack. \nDetails of the walk:- Nenthead Circular Route Description \nParking: Free\, at the entrance to Nenthead mines.\nToilets: Free\, located at the entrance to the carpark.\nDistance: 3.8km/2.3 miles\nRoute description: Leaving the car park we will turn left and cross the road to join the public footpath which passes between trees. We will follow the path and descend approx. 20 stairs (the stairs have no handrail\, please let us know if these will be an obstacle for you as there is an alternative route available).\nWe will cross the main road through Nenthead and follow a paved track for a short distance. We will then join a footpath which is solid underfoot and will pass the miniature village where we will stop for a few moments.\nOnce everyone has seen the miniature village we will continue along the footpath until it turns to the right. Here we will have an uphill climb for approximately 0.5km/0.3 miles on a well paved road. We will be having regular breaks as we climb the hill to notice interesting features in the landscape.\nWe will then have a level walk along a flat well paved road for approx. 0.5km/0.3 miles before we begin to walk down hill again into the town. The downhill is well paved road turning into a cobbled road with a paved pavement. Here there is an option to end the walk if you would prefer.\nAt the bottom of the hill we will begin to walk uphill again for about 0.5km/0.3 miles. This is less steep than the previous stretch of uphill\, although it is not paved and can be wet underfoot. Along this stretch of the walk we will take breaks to enjoy views of a waterfall and historic buildings.\nOnce we reach the top of the hill we will enter Nenthead mines and follow the solid compressed gravel path gently downhill and through the historic mining landscape until we reach the carpark where we began.\nThroughout this walk we will be walking at the pace of the slowest member of the group\, and we will be taking breaks as often needed. There are no stiles on this walk\, and the stairs can be avoided. \nTo book onto the walk please use the link below. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Annual Forum 2022
DESCRIPTION:The North Pennines AONB Partnership’s Annual Forum is an opportunity to find out about some of the recent and upcoming work of the AONB Partnership staff team and to discuss matters relating to the future well-being of our natural and cultural heritage. Last year was our first online event and the success of that session has prompted us to return to this format\, but we are running the event in the evening to widen the audience further. \nThis year\, as well as more general round up of our main areas of work and some of the issues facing AONBs\, there will be a focus on our work on engaging people with nature and culture. You will hear from some of the team members who are working to introduce more people\, from wider audiences\, to all the North Pennines has to offer. There will be an opportunity to put questions to the team using the webinar’s Q&A function\, and dig deeper into the work and its benefits and challenges. \nAfter the success of last year’s panel discussion on nature recovery\, this year we will be bringing together a panel from around the country to discuss issues around work on equality\, diversity and inclusion in nature and heritage\, and why it matters. Look out for announcements of our panel in the coming weeks. \nTo round off the event\, the 2022 winner of the ‘Pendlebury Award’ (in memory of the Partnership’s first chairman\, Cllr. Bob Pendlebury) will be announced\, marking an outstanding achievement in conserving the AONB or helping others to explore\, enjoy and understand this special place. \nBooking is essential and full joining details will be shared with registered attendees in the week leading up to the forum. Please book by Monday 28 November. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

Please contact molly@northpenninesaonb.org.uk for further information. \nThis event is delivered as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme.
