The course takes place on 10 May from 9.30am to 2.30pm\, at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning and along the Pennine Way in the afternoon.  The walks and training follow the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s (BCT) survey methodology and training will include information on the national BeeWalk scheme. \nEach BeeWalk would be approximately 1 to 2 km long\, encompassing a variety of habitats including a selection of upland hay meadows\, woodland\, or roadside verges.  The BeeWalks take place from May to September\, bi-weekly\, and can be carried out individually or paired with another volunteer. Please note we will provide a different meeting point location. \nActivities will include sound walking\, recording techniques\, microphone placement\, environmental listening\, and extended field recording approaches. Through different recording activities the artists will collect the diverse sounds from the different ecologies of this area. Listeners will be able to explore using air pressure microphones\, hydrophones\, contact microphones\, parabolic reflectors\, bat detectors\, and geophones. \nParticipants will gain hands-on experience of the craft of field recording\, location sound\, and new ways of listening to our shared sound-scapes. His television work includes many programmes in the David Attenborough ‘Life’ series including ‘The Life of Birds’\, which won a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Factual Sound’ in 1996\, and as the location sound recordist for the BBC series ‘Frozen Planet’\, which also won a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Factual Sound’ (2012). Watson has recorded and featured in many BBC Radio 4 and World Service productions\, including ‘The Wire’ which won him the Broadcasting Press Guild’s Broadcaster of The Year Award (2012). His music is regularly featured on the BBC Radio 3 programme ‘Late Junction’. He has also worked extensively for RTE Radio 1 on series such as ‘Sound Stories’ \nTim Shaw \nTim Shaw\, originally from Cumbria\, is an artist working with sound\, light and communication media. Presenting work through performances\, installations and sound walks\, Tim is interested in how affective environments can be constructed or explored using a diverse range of techniques and technologies. Working with field recordings\, electronics\, video\, synthesis\, sound objects\, self-made hardware and DIY software his practice creatively appropriates communication technologies to explore how these devices change the way we experience the world. He presents work in galleries\, forests\, warehouses\, caves\, public spaces\, festivals\, museums\, through residencies and cultural events both nationally and internationally. Hands-on sessions will cover mortar mixing\, repointing masonry\, plastering\, screeding floors\, and limewashing. \nThis training is aimed at people who have an interest in using lime and building up their skills to support community heritage restoration projects within the Fellfoot Forward LPS area\, especially community volunteers involved with the restoration and/or management of community buildings in the scheme area. \nParticipants have the opportunity to present their community or own buildings as case studies that we can assess and suggest actions for. We’ll discuss the effect of inappropriate materials on old buildings; what structural detailing they need; which modern products are compatible with lime\, and best practice\, timescales/scheduling of lime-work. \nThe training will be led by Gemma Sayers\, a lime and earth plasterer with ten years experience in earth\, stone\, straw and timber construction. Her role often entails structural repair work\, installing insulation\, underfloor heating screeds\, and traditional building maintenance. After a full year of painting a bird a week\, Katherine kept on painting birds and continues to combine her passion for painting with a love of birds. \nThe #fridaybirdie paintings have been reproduced as cards\, Giclee prints and homeware and are soon to be published in the ornithologist Michael Turner’s new book\, ‘A history of birds in the Derwent Valley’. \nKatherine has worked for over 30 years as an Artist/Designer\, Secondary School Art teacher\, Artist-in-Residence and Painting Tutor\, both in the UK and in New Zealand. \nBased in Rowlands Gill\, Katherine takes inspiration from the natural world\, particularly from the wild birds in her garden.
