We will start the day with a walk led by RSPB Conservation Advisor Janet Fairclough\, learning to identify and appreciate the bubbling call of the curlew. We will record our sightings on the iNaturalist app\, contributing to our conservation work. Back at the Visitor Centre there’s a chance to warm up with hot drinks and baked goods from the Falls Café. Then you will spend time with local artist Sara Cox on a creative journey to explore the shape and patterns of the curlew\, making a 3D mobile.\nRefreshments and art materials will be provided. We can provide binoculars\, although please feel free to bring your own. \nPlease note: \n\nThe walk will be over rough terrain.\nThe art activity will use blockprinting ink\, which may stain. Exact location here. Please note we will provide a different meeting point location. \nActivities will include sound walking\, recording techniques\, microphone placement\, environmental listening\, and extended field recording approaches. Through different recording activities the artists will collect the diverse sounds from the different ecologies of this area. Listeners will be able to explore using air pressure microphones\, hydrophones\, contact microphones\, parabolic reflectors\, bat detectors\, and geophones. \nParticipants will gain hands-on experience of the craft of field recording\, location sound\, and new ways of listening to our shared sound-scapes. It will include an afternoon/evening workshop on Thursday 4 May\, starting at 2pm\, and a (very) early morning dawn chorus workshop Friday 5 May\, ending 9am. \nBreakfast will be provided to all participants following the dawn chorus workshop on Friday 5 May. He specialises in creating spatial sound installations which feature a strong sense and spirit of place. His television work includes many programmes in the David Attenborough ‘Life’ series including ‘The Life of Birds’\, which won a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Factual Sound’ in 1996\, and as the location sound recordist for the BBC series ‘Frozen Planet’\, which also won a BAFTA Award for ‘Best Factual Sound’ (2012). Watson has recorded and featured in many BBC Radio 4 and World Service productions\, including ‘The Wire’ which won him the Broadcasting Press Guild’s Broadcaster of The Year Award (2012). His music is regularly featured on the BBC Radio 3 programme ‘Late Junction’. He has also worked extensively for RTE Radio 1 on series such as ‘Sound Stories’ \nTim Shaw \nTim Shaw\, originally from Cumbria\, is an artist working with sound\, light and communication media. Presenting work through performances\, installations and sound walks\, Tim is interested in how affective environments can be constructed or explored using a diverse range of techniques and technologies. Working with field recordings\, electronics\, video\, synthesis\, sound objects\, self-made hardware and DIY software his practice creatively appropriates communication technologies to explore how these devices change the way we experience the world. He presents work in galleries\, forests\, warehouses\, caves\, public spaces\, festivals\, museums\, through residencies and cultural events both nationally and internationally. The resulting photographs will be exhibited a short distance down the dale in the field at the Langdon Beck Hotel\, from Wednesday 10 June to Sunday 4 June. Entry is free and there is parking at the hotel. \nTwenty images of life\, work\, and the natural year at Herdship will be on display\, set into the landscape high in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The large format images have been mounted on posts which will be repurposed for tree guards at the end of the exhibition. The course takes place on 10 May from 9.30am to 2.30pm\, at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning and along the Pennine Way in the afternoon.  The walks and training follow the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s (BCT) survey methodology and training will include information on the national BeeWalk scheme. \nEach BeeWalk would be approximately 1 to 2 km long\, encompassing a variety of habitats including a selection of upland hay meadows\, woodland\, or roadside verges.  The BeeWalks take place from May to September\, bi-weekly\, and can be carried out individually or paired with another volunteer. The workshop will examine the opportunities\, challenges\, threats and constraints currently being experienced at the delivery level\, with a focus on peatland restoration work in the UK as a demonstrator. The workshops will conclude with a set of actions for the relevant bodies to review and make happen\, so that two things can be realised: a) the envisioned upscaling of ecosystem restoration in the UK and b) the Government’s ambitions around private / blended finance making a real contribution to nature recovery.\nThe planned programme is interactive and will consist of a blend of presentations\, workshops\, and time to network with speakers and colleagues. Professional archaeological and geological supervision will be available on both days. All the materials used in the construction are to be sourced locally. The stargazing pavilion will be co-constructed with volunteers who will be making the hazel panels that will encase the green wood uprights and seating. \nGreen woodworker\, Shannon Berry\, will lead the hazel panel making workshops. She is passionate about encouraging people into green woodworking and supporting the skills\, heritage and the makers that produce those products which offer a sustainable choice. During the 3-day workshops there will be a progression of knowledge and skills as the hazel panels needed for the build are made. \nYou must be 18 years or over to take part. We anticipate groups of sixteen people on each 3-day workshop. There is a camping area and local accommodation available. We will provide basic packed lunches and a hot meal in the evening. There are facilities for making hot drinks\, a fridge\, toilets\, showers and fire pit on site. All tools and equipment will be provided.
