SUMMARY:Nenthead big dig
DESCRIPTION:Get involved in an archaeological dig taking place in Nenthead this summer. No experience is necessary. We are investigating the domestic lives of the lead miners who lived and worked in Nenthead in the past. \nThe dates for the digs are 1 to 4 August and 6 to 11 August\, 10am to 4pm each day. Meeting point is Nenthead Village Hall. Each day has a limit of eight spaces available. \nSupervised by professional archaeologists\, this is a chance to have a go at real hands-on archaeology. Suitable for ages six years and up. All children must be supervised by an adult (please book a space for each child and adult that would like to attend). \nVolunteers and local community members\, with a professional archaeologist\, will dig a series of small test pits in gardens and fields around the village. We are likely to find things like broken pottery\, bits of clay pipes\, and maybe some broken personal items\, such as toys and buttons. \nYou don’t need any special equipment as this will be provided. \nThe digs are free to attend. Donations are welcome and enable the North Pennines National Landscape team to protect and restore this special place and help people connect with nature. \nSign up using the link to Ticketsource \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Historic environment: indoor working day
DESCRIPTION:The monthly volunteer indoor working days at our Stanhope Office build on our historical research /field recording work and gives volunteers the opportunity to develop their skills further. \nHistorical Research volunteers\nFor volunteers working on historical research projects (such as “Unlocking the Asylum Archives” and “Caldwell Harpur: Diaries of a Crank”) these monthly research meetings are an excellent opportunity to meet others working on the same project to share exciting research findings\, explore emerging themes\, and work on any tricky transcriptions together. \nStaff will be on hand to offer guidance on resources\, answer questions\, and help you work through any challenges and supply much needed tea and biscuits. \nPhotogrammetry and Archaeology volunteers\nPhotogrammetry volunteers can process the photographs collected on site to create detailed photogrammetry models\, exploring how digital techniques can enhance our understanding of historic landscapes. Volunteers will also work with a range of sources—including written accounts\, LiDAR data and QGIS mapping—to place the recorded lead mining sites in their wider historical context. Our findings will be added to Historic England’s Missing Pieces project\, helping to expand and enrich the national record. \nNo previous experience is needed; these sessions are designed to support beginners while offering plenty of scope for those wishing to grow their research and digital heritage skills. You do not need to have attended the associated site day to join us for these indoor work sessions.\nRefreshments are provided throughout the day but please bring a lunch if needed. If you want to bring equipment with you\, you are welcome to\, but we will also have some equipment available for you to use. \nDates for 2026 – all at Stanhope are drop in sessions from 10am to 4pm: \n• Friday 1st May\n• Friday 5th June\n• Friday 3rd July\n• Friday 7th August\n• Friday 2nd October\n• Friday 30th October\n• Friday 4th  December\n• Friday 18th December) \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact volunteer system \n  \n

SUMMARY:'Diaries of a crank' - decoding the secret diaries of an assayer
DESCRIPTION:Join us online on Monday 10 August\, 6pm to 8pm\, to learn about Nenthead’s most eccentric Edwardian\, Caldwell Harpur\, who left behind 20 volumes of personal diaries\, all encrypted in his self-invented alphabet\, which he called “Lenish”. \nCaldwell was a dabbler in mysticism\, a lifelong vegetarian\, a science fiction author\, and an avid book collector. He also wrote compulsively\, corresponding with everyone from close family to Russian radicals\, spiritualist mediums\, and science fiction author\, H.G. Wells. \nThis event launches an exciting new volunteer project to decode the diaries that Caldwell kept every day during his 20 years in Nenthead. There will be an illustrated talk exploring his stranger-than-fiction life\, followed by an optional activity where participants can try their hand at deciphering his code. Suitable for ages 18+. \nSign up using the Ticketsource link below: \n\n\n \n \n\n \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Find out about rare Alchemillas
DESCRIPTION:Come along to Hayberries Nature Reserve on Tuesday 18 August\, 9.30am to 12.30pm\, and discover the North Pennines’ rare Lady’s-mantles (Alchemillas). \nVisitors can learn how to tell the difference between the common garden Lady’s-mantle and the rarer species\, some of which are found only in the North Pennines. \nDuring the event\, a group of botanists will be surveying Lady’s-mantles at the reserve to help improve our understanding of where these plants grow and how they are doing. Visitors are welcome to take part in the survey and need to book via the Ticketsource link below. \nDid you know? The plant name\, alchemilla\, means ‘little alchemist’ and it is named after its association with alchemy. Medieval alchemists collected the pristine\, bead-like dew droplets from its water-repellent leaves\, believing it had properties for turning base metals to gold. \nThis free event is open to anyone interested in plants\, wildlife and conservation. It’s also a great chance to find out about future volunteering opportunities and how you can get involved. There will be an information stand near the entrance where staff from the North Pennines National Landscape team will be able to tell you more about the team’s work with rare Lady’s-mantles and answer your questions. \nSuitable for all ages. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Well-behaved dogs on leads allowed. There is tarmac car parking\, but no designated disabled bays. The site consists of unsealed tracks\, bare earth and grass\, and routes can be uneven and narrow. There are various gradients\, including steep sections of path. If you have any questions about the accessibility of this event\, please email us. \nBook to take part in the survey via Ticketsource\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n  \nThe North Pennines National Landscape team has received funding from Defra’s Species Recovery Programme for a three-year project to help conserve five rare Lady’s-mantle species found in the area.

SUMMARY:Without Galena - outdoor performance
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live outdoor performance work created with – and within – the landscape of Bollihope\, a place of outstanding beauty and rich industrial history. Bollihope is near Frosterley and Stanhope in County Durham. \nDigging into the stories buried in the belly of this unique man-made landscape\, five artists take to its hills on Sunday 13 September\, revealing a curious alchemy of music\, dance\, image\, and the pull of the wind itself. There are two performances\, 1pm and 3.30pm\, which last approximately 45 minutes and takes place entirely outdoors. \nPlease bring a blanket or camping chair to settle onto the spoil heap and\, most importantly\, a pair of binoculars to catch the performance up high. The terrain and the route from the car park to the performance area can be viewed here. \nEsther Huss is a contemporary dance artist who regularly collaborates with visual artist Claudia Sacher and sound artist Jeremy Bradfield\, and is joined for this performance by dance artist Aki Iwamoto and musician John Pope.
This commission\, awarded a grant by the North Pennines National Landscape team\, sees the five artists reimagine our landscape through dance\, sound and visual art. \nThere is an optional donation of £3.
