SUMMARY:Aurora nights at Grassholme Observatory: session 1

The event will begin with a personal welcome from Grassholme’s astronomer\, Gary Fildes. After the welcome\, Gary and the team will escort you into the new state of the art classroom\, which has a cosy feel\, and high definition (HD) projection system. \nBooking is essential: book via https://www.grassholmeobservatory.com/book/ . Tickets cost: £18 (adults); £15 (concessions); £55 (family) \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 22-31 October 2021 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest21 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Nature - art installation by Jane Young
DESCRIPTION:Look out for a temporary art installation by Jane Young amongst the trees at Bowlees between 12th October and 30th November. \nAbout the artist\nJane Young is an artist based in Teesdale who is just at the end of studying MA Fine Art at University of Sunderland. Since 2012\, she has worked as an Artist and Creative Encourager in and around the North East of England. \nJane’s work focuses on art for health and wellbeing within the community. Over the last eighteen months\, and following the Covid-19 pandemic\, she has developed ways to engage the community in addressing concerns around the climate emergency and the threat to our environment\, and has explored how this approach links to states of health and wellbeing. Jane’s work is a collaboration with nature and draws attention to the fragility and beauty of the environment. \nHer installations have been created in the natural settings where she has taken her walks throughout the course of the pandemic and are recorded in a series of videos and photographs on Instagram: www.instagram.com/janeyoungart \nA Conversation with Nature\nJane says: \n“In my work I explore our relationship with the natural world – a voyage of discovery which in turn enables us to become more aware of ourselves. This creates a SelfScape – a keener sense of self and our part in the wider ecology of place which in turn can help with our own and the community’s sense of health and wellbeing. \n“It is my hope that the work I create will help ensure that the appreciation of the natural world does not disappear now that life is getting back to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic – indeed to make certain that\, into the future\, we develop a more sustainable way of living\, caring for and engaging with our environment; a new normal.” \n

SUMMARY:Nature's Calendar at Talkin Tarn
DESCRIPTION:Nature’s Calendar at Talkin Tarn\nCome and celebrate the changing of the seasons and learn how to record the signs of autumn in your area for the Woodland Trust’s Nature’s Calendar database. We’ll meet at the log cabin for 10am and head out on a family friendly walk where we’ll encounter trees beginning to take on their autumn colours. \nNo prior knowledge is necessary\, as we’ll go through the identification of some common trees on the day. Afterwards\, we’ll have lunch and look at how you can upload your own records into Nature’s Calendar. \nNature’s Calendar is a long-standing citizen science project\, hosted by The Woodland Trust\, which dates as far back as 1736. By uploading records of seasonal changes onto the database\, you can help scientists answer questions such as what effect weather has on wildlife\, and whether climate change is affecting timings in nature. \nThis event is open to everyone\, including families\, although the terrain may be uneven so please ensure you have suitable footwear.  The walk will take approximately 2 hours so bring appropriate clothing and a packed lunch. Places are limited so booking is essential. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:High Helbeck sketching experience with Janet Swailes
DESCRIPTION:“Join me for a sketching trip to a beautiful hidden valley on the High Helbeck estate. We take a rough track down from the main road\, before crossing open ground to reach a waterfall near Swindale Head. We will stop at at a number of different viewpoints as we move from the moorlands to the valley and discuss the different features that we can use to make an interesting composition\, with simple techniques to get them down in a sketchbook – as well as considering some of the abstract qualities to be found in the landscape.” – Janet Swailes \nYou will be provided with a small sketchbook\, a pencil\, and a view finder – and will have the opportunity to try out other sketching materials. \nTechniques: \n• Composition – quick thumbnail sketches Using a view finder to gather a number of quick impressions of the views you see; testing ideas and arrangements with quick sketches. Scaling features in your sketch using a pencil to measure. \n• Mark making – experimental drawing and mixed media Experimenting with gestural and expressive mark making\, with a focus on drawing practice; getting more out of line and working with resists. \nThe High Helbeck Green Recovery Fund Project is a partnership project between estate owners Ben & Nicolete Blackett-Ord\, the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the RSPB\, the Woodland Trust and Natural England. The Defra-backed project runs from January 2021 to March 2022 and a key part of the scheme is to deliver significant biodiversity benefits to the High Helbeck estate (near Brough\, Cumbria) including 80 hectares of peatland restoration\, an increase in trees and scrub\, covering 153 hectares\, and a series of small wetlands to enhance 85 hectares of habitat for breeding wading birds. \nPlease note there is around a 1 mile walk to the main sketching area and therefore a 1 mile walk back.  Part of the walk is on the B6276\, some on track and some is on uneven ground. The walk into and out of the estate is down/up a steep bank. Consequently\, this event requires attendees to have a basic level of fitness. Please ensure you dress for the weather and bring sturdy walking boots. No food or drink is provided but please feel free to bring your own packed lunch. There is a toilet near the main sketching area and shelter too if needed. No dogs are permitted on the High Helbeck walks. \nMeeting Point – Deadman Gill Layby – grid reference – NY823188. If you are unsure of directions\, please contact Chris Jones (cjones@northpenninesaonb.org.uk). Please car share where possible as parking is very limited.
