SUMMARY:High Helbeck sketching experience with Janet Swailes
DESCRIPTION:“Join me for a sketching trip to a beautiful hidden valley on the High Helbeck estate. We take a rough track down from the main road\, before crossing open ground to reach a waterfall near Swindale Head. We will stop at at a number of different viewpoints as we move from the moorlands to the valley and discuss the different features that we can use to make an interesting composition\, with simple techniques to get them down in a sketchbook – as well as considering some of the abstract qualities to be found in the landscape.” – Janet Swailes \nYou will be provided with a small sketchbook\, a pencil\, and a view finder – and will have the opportunity to try out other sketching materials. \nTechniques: \n• Composition – quick thumbnail sketches Using a view finder to gather a number of quick impressions of the views you see; testing ideas and arrangements with quick sketches. Scaling features in your sketch using a pencil to measure. \n• Mark making – experimental drawing and mixed media Experimenting with gestural and expressive mark making\, with a focus on drawing practice; getting more out of line and working with resists. \nThe High Helbeck Green Recovery Fund Project is a partnership project between estate owners Ben & Nicolete Blackett-Ord\, the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the RSPB\, the Woodland Trust and Natural England. The Defra-backed project runs from January 2021 to March 2022 and a key part of the scheme is to deliver significant biodiversity benefits to the High Helbeck estate (near Brough\, Cumbria) including 80 hectares of peatland restoration\, an increase in trees and scrub\, covering 153 hectares\, and a series of small wetlands to enhance 85 hectares of habitat for breeding wading birds. \nPlease note there is around a 1 mile walk to the main sketching area and therefore a 1 mile walk back.  Part of the walk is on the B6276\, some on track and some is on uneven ground. The walk into and out of the estate is down/up a steep bank. Consequently\, this event requires attendees to have a basic level of fitness. Please ensure you dress for the weather and bring sturdy walking boots. No food or drink is provided but please feel free to bring your own packed lunch. There is a toilet near the main sketching area and shelter too if needed. No dogs are permitted on the High Helbeck walks. \nMeeting Point – Deadman Gill Layby – grid reference – NY823188. If you are unsure of directions\, please contact Chris Jones (cjones@northpenninesaonb.org.uk). Please car share where possible as parking is very limited.

SUMMARY:Bicycle Boy at Melmerby\, Cumbria
DESCRIPTION:An outdoor musical for all the family packed with songs and humour\, Bicycle Boy explores themes of sustainability in an engaging\, pedal-powered performance. \nOur hero\, Sam\, has 24 hours to clear out his grandad’s old bike workshop; it has been a difficult time and the business has to close. He remembers granddad teaching him to ride – and playing with him\, pretending to be superhero Bicycle Boy. It seems grandad may have left Sam a present somewhere in the workshop\, and some clues to find it. \nBut there’s no power and Sam needs electricity to unlock the messages. He needs our help. If we can connect up enough bikes and pedal like mad\, we can make generate enough power for Sam’s journey (and the show). \nTickets: free or pay what you decide. or call 017683 71885. \nAge guidance 5+\, all children must be accompanied by parent/carer.

SUMMARY:High Helbeck estate botany walk (3.5 miles)
DESCRIPTION:Join expert botanist\, Ruth Starr-Keddle\, on a gentle walk through the beautiful Swindale Valley\, part of the High Helbeck estate. As well as discussing the exciting project on the estate\, Ruth will teach you the fundamentals about plant identification as well as enjoying and learning about the type of plants that inhabit the valley. \nThe High Helbeck Green Recovery Fund Project is a partnership project between estate owners Ben & Nicolete Blackett-Ord\, the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the RSPB\, the Woodland Trust and Natural England. The Defra-backed project runs from January 2021 to March 2022 and a key part of the scheme is to deliver significant and exciting biodiversity benefits to the High Helbeck estate (near Brough\, Cumbria) including 80 hectares of peatland restoration\, an increase in tree and scrub covering 153 hectares and a series of small wetlands to enhance 85 hectares of habitat for breeding wading birds. \nThe route is just over 3.5 miles in total and follows the same route back. The walk does involve some road walking and some steep inclines and descents but as the route is mostly all on track and road\, its fairly easy underfoot. A good basic level of fitness is however required. Please ensure you dress for the weather and bring sturdy walking boots. No food or drink is provided but please feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks. There is a toilet available in the valley for you to use if required. No dogs are allowed on this event.

SUMMARY:Art Week event: Chalk and charcoal at Bowlees
DESCRIPTION:Art workshop: chalk and charcoal at Bowlees \nExplore the light and dark  of charcoal to record your visit to Bowlees with the help of local artist Sue Abel. Capture the landscape\, the river\, the trees and birds and build up your composition of strong marks on tinted paper. Use blending for soft 3D effects; use white chalk to add light and highlights. SUMMARY:Swindale circular challenge walk with live folk music
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a challenging 8 mile circular walk from Brough village up the Swindale Valley and onto the High Helbeck Estate and then back down the valley into Brough village. Buffet lunch is provided as is some folk music by local musician Bill Lloyd. There will be a toilet available for use during lunch. \nThe route is around 8 miles long. The walk does follow existing public footpaths for the majority of the route\, but it is important to note that the terrain can be very challenging at times with some steep accents and descents as well as areas of boggy ground. This walk should only be undertaken if you have a good level of fitness. The walk incorporates stiles and steep terrain. Please ensure you dress for the weather and bring sturdy walking boots. There are toilets at the lunch stop\, halfway into the walk. No dogs are permitted on the High Helbeck walks. \nOutside ‘The Inn at Brough’ pub. Please park considerately in Brough village if you have to travel by car.  If you are unsure of directions\, please contact Chris Jones (cjones@northpenninesaonb.org.uk). \nOnce you have confirmed your booking we will contact you in regards to your dietary requirements. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nImage © Paul Henry / High Helbeck estate

SUMMARY:Exhibition: landscapes\, Teesdale and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Ginny Whittle : landscapes\, Teesdale and beyond\n1 – 31 August 2021\nAn exhibition of artwork by Teesdale artist\, Ginny Whittle \nGinny’s work is informed by walking\, mountaineering\, climbing and camping amongst and on the mountains with her Border Terrier “Tatty” who loves a winter mountain day with firm snow to scamper along to a summit. \nShe loves to dwell in places visited by the great painters in our local landscapes\, like JWM Turner at “Meeting of The Waters” on The Tees; feel their presence; look at the changes time has made on the view. \nGinny is increasingly fascinated by the activities of people in the outdoors and our changing relationship to mountains over time. Because of this she likes to put figures into her paintings; these are basic in form and some are the size of very small ants\, but they in their turn inform the landscape. \nGinny has a degree in Fine Art and a teaching qualification. She was selected for The Laing Landscape Competition and exhibited in The Mall Galleries London. \nThe exhibition runs from 1 – 31 August 2021. There is no need to book. The exhibition is open when the Visitor Centre is\, daily from 10am to 4pm.

SUMMARY:Art Week
DESCRIPTION:Art Week inspired by North Pennines’ geology\nA week of art activities and inspiration to encourage people to create their own artworks inspired by the natural beauty of one of England’s special landscapes. \nThe North Pennines AONB Partnership is hosting an Art Week from 31 July to 8 August as part of the Earthworks geology project\, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This includes events and online content to encourage people to get involved and produce their own art\, inspired by the stunning landscape and geology of the North Pennines AONB and UNESCO Global Geopark. \nDuring the week the AONB Partnership are sharing top tips\, ideas and a series of videos for green sketching for wellbeing from Boggy Doodles\, and there are artists out in the landscape in a couple of places each day\, creating art as people pass by and stop to chat. Today that gives us hills and valleys\, rivers and waterfalls\, a unique combination of rare wildlife and hints of a strong mining and cultural heritage. Art is a fantastic way to immerse ourselves in the landscape\, and really take notice of the world around us\, from the tiniest flower to the shapes of the hills to the clouds in the sky.
