SUMMARY:Bat walk on High Helbeck estate
DESCRIPTION:Accompany us at dusk to the High Helbeck estate on a bat walk\, where we will be observing and learning about the different species present on the estate. We will also be discussing the current work taking place on the estate to conserve these important species\, and keeping our eyes and ears open for any other nocturnal wildlife we might come across\, such as owls. \nThe High Helbeck Green Recovery Fund Project is a partnership project between estate owners Ben & Nicolete Blackett-Ord\, the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the RSPB\, the Woodland Trust and Natural England. The Defra-backed project runs from January 2021 to March 2022 and a key part of the scheme is to deliver significant biodiversity benefits to the High Helbeck estate (near Brough\, Cumbria) including 80 hectares of peatland restoration\, an increase in trees and scrub\, covering 153 hectares\, and a series of small wetlands to enhance 85 hectares of habitat for breeding wading birds. \nThis circular route is around 1 mile long and follows tracks and grass tracks. Its fairly easy going and we will be taking our time. Nevertheless please wrap up warm and wear sturdy boots. There are no toilets available and no food or drink is provided. We will supply bat detectors for you to use for the duration of the event. Please bring torches with you. No dogs are permitted on the High Helbeck walks. The track off the road to the parking has many potholes and may have livestock\, please drive very slowly to avoid damage to your car or to any livestock or wildlife. \n\n\n\n                \n                \n\n\nWoodside trackside layby – grid reference – NY810168. SUMMARY:Edible and medicinal plants of upland hay meadows
DESCRIPTION:Explore an upland hay meadow through the lens of plant use with botanist Dr Ruth Starr-Keddle and forager Pia Castleton. During this interactive workshop we will discover edible and medicinal plants\, learn about their past and present use and share stories and folklore. \nThe day will start at Bowlees Visitor Centre\, walking to a Teesdale meadow before heading to Wynch Bridge End Cottage to craft some healing balm and kitchen condiments. \nAll plant materials and equipment will be provided. SUMMARY:Farmer event: introduction to plant ID
DESCRIPTION:This event is restricted to farmers\, land owners and landmanagers in the Tees-Swale area and will take place in Muker\, Swaledale. \nJoin Stuart Hedley\, an experience field ecologist on a meadow plant identification session. We will focus on an introduction to a rapid monitoring method as it offers a quick way to assess changes in plants where there has been restoration or major changes to meadow management. \nStuart will cover some essential ID tips focussing on common meadow species as we work in small groups to achieve the common aim.  We do not plan to cover grasses although can demonstrate the variety at the end of the session if time allows. \nIf you have plants that you would like identified please bring material with you or send good quality photos in advance to Christa Nelson before the event. \nPlaces are limited\, to book or if you wold like further information please contact Christa.Nelson@yorkshiredales.org.uk \nThis event is delivered as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme. DESCRIPTION:Sue Abel and Susanna Heath : coast to dale\n1 – 31 July 2021\nAn exhibition of artwork by two Weardale artists\, Sue Abel and Susanna Heath. \nSue’s creative work moves from painting in oils\, acrylics and watercolours to textile work like silk painting and batik decoration. Her work is inspired by the landscapes of the north ease and from her travels to Scotland and the Islands. \nSusanna’s work is about places; places where she lives and places she loves to visit. Initially she is inspired by the fleeting effects of light in the landscape. She tries to capture the mood of the scene and the movement; sometimes loud\, sometimes peaceful\, but always in that moment of time. Susanna usually works “en plein air”\, going out into the open elements and painting. \nThe exhibition runs from1 – 31 July 2021. There is no need to book. The exhibition is open when the Visitor Centre is\, daily from 10am to 4pm.

You will learn what Paul Henry does day-to-day to look after this unique ecosystem and will have the opportunity to practice your photography skills on some beautiful landscapes and natural features. We will also be talking about the revolutionary conservation work taking place on the estate and looking out for any wildlife we might come across\, particularly upland wading bird species. DESCRIPTION:The Tees-Swale programme is hosting two guided walks at Heggs-Castle ‘cluster’ in Arkengarthdale where you can learn more about native trees and woodlands. \nThe walks will be led by Edward Mills\, a Chartered Forester\, author\, woodland owner and manager of a variety of woodlands and small forestry estates in the Lake District\, Northern England and Scotland. He teaches various tree and woodland related courses and his areas of expertise are wide. Edward will discuss tree identification and topics of importance in current changing times including tree diseases\, climate change\, rewilding and matching the right tree for the right place. \nThis event is part of the Tees-Swale programme funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership in collaboration with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. DESCRIPTION:Delivered as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme this interactive day-long outdoor workshop at Bowlees Quarry will help you get to grips with the commonest grasses. We will look at the key features of grass flower structure and vegetative features\, plus investigate how to tell the differences between each grass genus\, such as the bents\, meadow grasses and fescues. We will look at a few sedges and rushes too. SUMMARY:Teesdale Pollinator Surveying: BeeWalk Training
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme we are looking for volunteers to undertake a series of BeeWalks once a week over a six to eight week period. This first Teesdale training session is open to those who already have basic bumblebee identification skills either from attending our webinar on the 5th of May or previous training. \nStarting from Bowlees Visitor Centre we will walk down to Low Force and along The Pennine Way towards Middleton-in-Teesdale where there will be lots of early flowering plants. The first hour will cover basic bumblebee identification including catching bumblebees using nets and identifying them in pots. During the second half of the afternoon\, we will cover the methodology of a BeeWalk whilst walking a one-mile stretch of The Pennine Way. \nVolunteers will need to commit to undertaking specific BeeWalks next to a meadow that will have seed addition this summer. The walks are to be undertaken once a week over a six to eight week period and locations\, maps etc. will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Join the North Pennines AONB Partnership on an early evening walk to explore part of the little known High Helbeck Estate. As well as discussing the current work taking place on the estate\, we will be keeping our eyes and ears open for any wildlife we might come across\, particularly upland wading bird species. Please bring binoculars if you have them\, although we will have some spares. \nThe High Helbeck Green Recovery Fund Project is a partnership project between estate owners Ben & Nicolete Blackett-Ord\, the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the RSPB\, the Woodland Trust and Natural England. The Defra-backed project runs from January 2021 to March 2022 and a key part of the scheme is to deliver significant biodiversity benefits to the High Helbeck estate (near Brough\, Cumbria) including 80 hectares of peatland restoration\, an increase in trees and scrub\, covering 153 hectares\, and a series of small wetlands to enhance 85 hectares of habitat for breeding wading birds. \nThe route is just over 2 miles long and follows the same route back. The walk does follow a fairly well trodden route\, but the terrain can be uneven and boggy in places. Due to the mixed terrain and topography\, a good basic level of fitness is required. Please ensure you dress for the weather and bring sturdy walking boots. SUMMARY:Swaledale Pollinator Surveying: BeeWalk Training
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme we are looking for volunteers to undertake a series of BeeWalks once a week over a six to eight week period. This first Swaledale training session is open to those who already have basic bumblebee identification skills either from attending our webinar on the 5th of May or previous training. \nHeld in Swaledale\, exact location to be confirmed\, this workshop will cover the methodology for carrying out a BeeWalk survey\, which will contribute to nationally important pollinator monitoring schemes and help assess the success of meadow restoration. \nVolunteers will need to commit to undertaking specific BeeWalks next to a meadow that will have seed addition this summer. The walks are to be undertaken once a week over a six to eight week period and locations\, maps etc. will be provided. We hope volunteers will continue to undertake the same BeeWalks in future so we can see how the bumblebee diversity increases as wildflower diversity increases. \nTees-Swale is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership in collaboration with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. \nPlaces are limited and booking is essential – please use the link below to book your place. \n\n\n\n                \n                \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Ann Whitfield: Watercolours of the northern hills\n17 May to 30 June\nAnn draws her inspiration from the remote Northern landscape\, the wild places\, ravaged by time and weather. The paintings of the North Pennines in this exhibition show some of the places she loves the most. Most are familiar to anyone who walks the hills. Some are just fragments\, rocks or trees along the way\, others seek to share the exhilaration of a moment in the wide empty landscape special to this area. \nAnn’s exhibition runs from 17 May until 30 June 2021. There is no need to book. The exhibition is open when the Visitor Centre is\, daily from 10am to 4pm.
