SUMMARY:High Helbeck estate botany walk (3.5 miles)
DESCRIPTION:Join expert botanist\, Ruth Starr-Keddle\, on a gentle walk through the beautiful Swindale Valley\, part of the High Helbeck estate. As well as discussing the exciting project on the estate\, Ruth will teach you the fundamentals about plant identification as well as enjoying and learning about the type of plants that inhabit the valley. \nThe High Helbeck Green Recovery Fund Project is a partnership project between estate owners Ben & Nicolete Blackett-Ord\, the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the RSPB\, the Woodland Trust and Natural England. The Defra-backed project runs from January 2021 to March 2022 and a key part of the scheme is to deliver significant and exciting biodiversity benefits to the High Helbeck estate (near Brough\, Cumbria) including 80 hectares of peatland restoration\, an increase in tree and scrub covering 153 hectares and a series of small wetlands to enhance 85 hectares of habitat for breeding wading birds. \nThe route is just over 3.5 miles in total and follows the same route back. The walk does involve some road walking and some steep inclines and descents but as the route is mostly all on track and road\, its fairly easy underfoot. A good basic level of fitness is however required. Please ensure you dress for the weather and bring sturdy walking boots. No food or drink is provided but please feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks. There is a toilet available in the valley for you to use if required. No dogs are allowed on this event.

SUMMARY:Art Week event: Chalk and charcoal at Bowlees
DESCRIPTION:Art workshop: chalk and charcoal at Bowlees \nExplore the light and dark  of charcoal to record your visit to Bowlees with the help of local artist Sue Abel. Capture the landscape\, the river\, the trees and birds and build up your composition of strong marks on tinted paper. Use blending for soft 3D effects; use white chalk to add light and highlights. Or work on an imaginary landscape or abstract; it’s easier than you think.  Finally fix your composition so you can take it home safely without smudging. \nPlease come prepared to be outdoors. This event is for adults. No dogs please. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \nThis event is part of  North Pennines Art Week\, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund through the North Pennines AONB Partnership’s Earthworks project.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: landscapes\, Teesdale and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Ginny Whittle : landscapes\, Teesdale and beyond\n1 – 31 August 2021\nAn exhibition of artwork by Teesdale artist\, Ginny Whittle \nGinny’s work is informed by walking\, mountaineering\, climbing and camping amongst and on the mountains with her Border Terrier “Tatty” who loves a winter mountain day with firm snow to scamper along to a summit. \nShe loves to dwell in places visited by the great painters in our local landscapes\, like JWM Turner at “Meeting of The Waters” on The Tees; feel their presence; look at the changes time has made on the view. \nGinny is increasingly fascinated by the activities of people in the outdoors and our changing relationship to mountains over time. Because of this she likes to put figures into her paintings; these are basic in form and some are the size of very small ants\, but they in their turn inform the landscape. \nGinny has a degree in Fine Art and a teaching qualification. She was selected for The Laing Landscape Competition and exhibited in The Mall Galleries London. \nThe exhibition runs from 1 – 31 August 2021. There is no need to book. The exhibition is open when the Visitor Centre is\, daily from 10am to 4pm.

SUMMARY:Art Week
DESCRIPTION:Art Week inspired by North Pennines’ geology\nA week of art activities and inspiration to encourage people to create their own artworks inspired by the natural beauty of one of England’s special landscapes. \nThe North Pennines AONB Partnership is hosting an Art Week from 31 July to 8 August as part of the Earthworks geology project\, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This includes events and online content to encourage people to get involved and produce their own art\, inspired by the stunning landscape and geology of the North Pennines AONB and UNESCO Global Geopark. \nDuring the week the AONB Partnership are sharing top tips\, ideas and a series of videos for green sketching for wellbeing from Boggy Doodles\, and there are artists out in the landscape in a couple of places each day\, creating art as people pass by and stop to chat. Local people and visitors are encouraged to get involved by creating their own art and sending in pictures of it to form an online gallery\, alongside the work produced by the professionals. Free painting sets are available to collect from Bowlees Visitor Centre to make it easy to get started. \nPlease send pictures of your own creations to james@northpenninesaonb.org.uk or share them with us on social media to be included in the online gallery. All ages and abilities welcome. \nConnect to other Art Week pages using the following links: \n\nGreen sketching: doodle the North Pennines \n\n\nGreen sketching \n\n\nArtists in the landscape \n\n\nEvent links\n2 August – Walk\, look\, stop\, breathe\, create \n4 August – Wild Wednesday: nature’s art \n5 August – Chalk and Charcoal \n5 August – Landscape draw-along \n6 August – Art and climate science webinar \n7 August – Painting outdoors with oils and acrylics \n  \nNaomi Foster\, Geology Projects Officer\, said: \n“The North Pennines has such an amazing landscape\, formed over millions of years and telling a story of tropical seas\, desert plains\, molten rock and vast sheets of ice. Today that gives us hills and valleys\, rivers and waterfalls\, a unique combination of rare wildlife and hints of a strong mining and cultural heritage. Art is a fantastic way to immerse ourselves in the landscape\, and really take notice of the world around us\, from the tiniest flower to the shapes of the hills to the clouds in the sky. We hope you are inspired to create your own art and to experience special places in new ways.” \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Photography walk on High Helbeck upland estate
DESCRIPTION:Join the High Helbeck Estate Manager on a walk around the estate\, taking in some of his favourite places. You will learn what Paul Henry does day-to-day to look after this unique ecosystem and will have the opportunity to practice your photography skills on some beautiful landscapes and natural features. We will also be talking about the revolutionary conservation work taking place on the estate and looking out for any wildlife we might come across\, particularly upland wading bird species. Please bring your own camera. \nThe High Helbeck Green Recovery Fund Project is a partnership project between estate owners Ben & Nicolete Blackett-Ord\, the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the RSPB\, the Woodland Trust and Natural England. The Defra-backed project runs from January 2021 to March 2022 and a key part of the scheme is to deliver significant biodiversity benefits to the High Helbeck estate (near Brough\, Cumbria) including 80 hectares of peatland restoration\, an increase in trees and scrub\, covering 153 hectares\, and a series of small wetlands to enhance 85 hectares of habitat for breeding wading birds. \nThis circular route is around 3 miles long. The walk follows a wide range of terrain on some steep slopes with some boggy areas. The route also passes through a small stream and\, as water levels can be unpredictable\, it is recommended to wear wellies just in case. A decent level of fitness is required to complete this walk. Please ensure you dress for the weather. No food or drink is provided but feel free to bring drinks and snacks. There is a toilet towards the end of the walk that can be used if required. As well as discussing the current work taking place on the estate\, we will be keeping our eyes and ears open for any wildlife we might come across\, particularly upland wading bird species. Please bring binoculars if you have them\, although we will have some spares. \nMeeting Point – Deadman Gill Layby – grid reference – NY823188. If you are unsure of directions\, please contact Chris Jones (cjones@northpenninesaonb.org.uk). Please car share where possible as parking is very limited.

SUMMARY:Bat walk on High Helbeck estate
DESCRIPTION:Accompany us at dusk to the High Helbeck estate on a bat walk\, where we will be observing and learning about the different species present on the estate. We will also be discussing the current work taking place on the estate to conserve these important species\, and keeping our eyes and ears open for any other nocturnal wildlife we might come across\, such as owls. \nThis circular route is around 1 mile long and follows tracks and grass tracks. Its fairly easy going and we will be taking our time. Nevertheless please wrap up warm and wear sturdy boots. There are no toilets available and no food or drink is provided. We will supply bat detectors for you to use for the duration of the event. Please bring torches with you. No dogs are permitted on the High Helbeck walks. The track off the road to the parking has many potholes and may have livestock\, please drive very slowly to avoid damage to your car or to any livestock or wildlife. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nWoodside trackside layby – grid reference – NY810168.
