DESCRIPTION:Come along and get involved in recording historic structures on working days at sites around the North Pennines. This is a chance to use your skills related to recording historic features\, including photogrammetry and condition assessment. You’ll have the chance to work with other volunteers and trained staff\, while helping us to safeguard these important sites. \nYou will need to bring walking boots and clothing appropriate for spending the day outdoors in a variety of weathers. You will also need a packed lunch\, snacks and a drink. SUMMARY:Historic environment research opportunity: unlocking the asylum archives
DESCRIPTION:Join us online to learn about a new volunteer research project revealing untold stories in historical collections from Garlands Asylum (Carlisle Archives)\, Winterton Hospital (The Story\, Durham)\, and St George’s Hospital (Woodhorn\, Northumberland). The event will be via Teams on Thursday\, 20 November\, 6pm to 7pm. \nCounty asylum records give a rare and intimate glimpse into the past through medical notes\, casebooks\, family letters\, and photographs. The project traces patients from lead mining communities to shed light onto the emotional worlds of people who are often absent from historical records save a name on a census report. \nThere are several roles for volunteers as the project develops including transcribing case notes\, photographing records\, and researching census reports and newspapers\, to build patient life stories. No prior experience is necessary\, and volunteers will be supported in learning and sharing new research skills. \n(Please note that this project is for adults only. The historical records use outdated terminology to describe disability and mental health conditions and may also contain material that some people may find distressing. This heritage experience is part of the Land of Lead and Silver project and is suitable for 18+. \nGuided by Gary Simpson of Heritage Consolidation Ltd\, you will gain unique insight into traditional building skills and take part in real restoration work in a stunning landscape rich with history.\nWhat you will do\n• Take part in a site safety briefing\n• Explore the Lime Cycle and understand how lime is produced and used\n• Watch a live lime slake and learn to mix lime mortars\n• Discover how to select and apply appropriate mortars for historic structures\n• Try your hand at raking out joints\, pointing\, and knocking-back techniques\n• Learn how to manage the drying cycle in changing weather conditions \nAll tools and protective equipment (glasses and gloves) will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Please note: this date has changed from 26 November\nThis winter we are holding a series of evening talks with the theme of examining the links between farming and nature. The talks\, held at The Moorcock Inn in Eggleston\, 7.30pm to 9pm\, are open to farmers and landowners as well as members of the public. Each evening there will be an invited speaker with the opportunity of discussion afterwards. \nAt the second talk in our series\, on Wednesday 5 November\, local botanist John O’Reilly\, who has been working alongside the Teesdale Special Flora Trust will discuss why are rare plants rare. \nEveryone welcome\, booking required\, £4 per person. DESCRIPTION:Come along for an exciting dark skies event in Croglin Village Hall\, on the western edge of the North Pennines on Cumbria’s eastern fellside\, Thursday 30 October\, 7pm to 10pm. \nThe evening will start with a talk from Andy Gray on why space travel is hard. Humanity has come a long way in the past 100 years\, breaking free from gravity and reaching Earth’s orbit and the Moon. Andy will explore the challenges of exploring beyond Earth and how likely it is that humans will be able to venture across the Milky Way and continue exploring the Universe. \nAfter Andy’s talk (and if the sky is clear) we will do some informal stargazing at a dark site (field) a short walk from the village hall. Be prepared for a potentially muddy walk and rocky/uneven ground. Gates but no stiles. If live stargazing is not possible there will be an opportunity to ask more questions\, together with a demonstration of the free Stellarium planetarium app. \nThis event is aimed at amateur astronomers and people with an interest in the night sky. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one) and wear suitable shoes for uneven/muddy ground. DESCRIPTION:Discover the freedom of trail running at night\, in the company of experienced runners\, as we follow the route of the High Force and Bowlees Geotrail. From Low Force we will run the Pennine Way to High Force. After experiencing the atmosphere of this magical place\, under the cover of darkness\, we will cross fields back to the visitor centre for tea and cake. \nThis is a\, guided\, 5-mile (8km) trail run over uneven\, rocky\, muddy and slippery ground. DESCRIPTION:Gather the whole family for a magical evening under the stars at High Force. The stargazing sessions offer a fun\, educational way to explore the night sky together. Discover constellations\, planets\, and more with expert guides—perfect for curious minds of all ages. \nDuring the North Pennines Stargazing Festival there are four opportunities to book on this event: \n\nWednesday 29 October\, 5pm to 6.30pm/ 7pm to 8.30pm\nThursday 30 October\, 5pm to 6.30pm/ 7pm to 8.30pm\n\nJoin the High Force team for this child-friendly session\, perfect for budding astronomers to learn about constellations\, planets\, and the wonders of the cosmos. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes. The walk to the waterfall will be dark and may be slippery – suitable footwear is advised. For safety reasons please do not bring large bags\, tripods or other bulky equipment. No dogs please – they’re a trip hazard in the dark. All children must be supervised by an adult. \nThe walk down to the waterfall (approx. 600m) can be challenging for people with mobility issues. Mobility scooters are unable to be used on the route at night. If you have any questions about accessibility please contact High Force Hotel in advance (01833 622336 or highforcehotel@raby.co.uk). \nThe sky can sometimes be restricted by cloud cover or poor conditions. Note that live stargazing is obviously dependent on suitable sky and weather conditions. \nListen to the tranquil music of Durham University Flute Choir while you sit under the stars. Gather around the warmth of the fire pit with local singer\, Tabby Michelin\, as she leads a celestial sing-along.
