SUMMARY:BeeWalk training with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust - Teesdale pollinator surveying
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for adult volunteers to undertake BeeWalks in the area and we’re offering a free one-day training course\, for both beginners and those with experience\, to learn about the identification of all 24 British bumblebees. \nThe course takes place on 16 May from 9.30am to 4.30pm\, at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning and along the Pennine Way in the afternoon.  The walks and training follow the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s (BCT) survey methodology and training will include information on the national BeeWalk scheme. \nEach BeeWalk would be approximately 1 to 2 km long\, encompassing a variety of habitats including a selection of upland hay meadows\, woodland\, or roadside verges.  The BeeWalks take place from May to September\, bi-weekly\, and can be carried out individually or paired with another volunteer. The aim is to monitor a selection of meadows pre- and post-restoration to see the impacts upon pollinator abundance\, whilst also adding vital data to a countrywide programme run by the BCT. The BeeWalks will be coordinated by a member of the Tees-Swale Farming and Nature Team. \nContact Molly for more information: molly@northpenninesaonb.org.uk.\nPlease sign up using our Better Impact volunteer system  \n

SUMMARY:Mining heritage condition assessment training
DESCRIPTION:Do you have an interest in the historic environment and lead mining heritage of the North Pennines and a passion about its conservation? We have an exciting volunteer opportunity to be trained in surveying and assessing the condition of these historic monuments. \nCondition assessment is an important part of protecting the past as it helps us to understand how the sites might be deteriorating over time and what threats there might be. The information gained during these assessments will be passed on to Historic England for them to monitor and consider for future consolidation works. \nIn this workshop you will learn about the threats that can be present on historic sites\, as well as how to record them accurately to help safeguard their future. All equipment will be provided. \nThis day will be spent outdoors\, location to be confirmed. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear walking boots. You will also need to bring a packed lunch\, and sufficient water to last you the day. \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact volunteer platform. \n  \n

SUMMARY:A day at Hannah’s meadows
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate National Meadows Day\, we have a weekend of activities at Low Birk Hatt farm in Baldersdale on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 July\, 10am to 2pm\, (with the option of a guided walk in the meadow until 3.30pm). \nSpend a day learning about the life of Hannah Hauxwell\, a farmer who lived an extraordinary life on a remote farm in Baldersdale. SUMMARY:Meadows day at Low Way Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free family event on Saturday 13 July\, 10.30am to 3.30pm\, at Low Way Farm\, Holwick\, to celebrate the magnificent meadows and farming history of Teesdale. \nThe North Pennines National Landscape contains almost half of the remaining species-rich upland hay meadows in the UK. As well as being a rare and important habitat for wildflowers\, upland hay meadows also support a whole range of invertebrates and birds. \nWe want to celebrate this important habitat and its cultural history with a variety of fun activities suitable for all ages. Come along and enjoy: \nA display of farming machinery old and new\nA display of machinery used for meadow restoration\nScything demonstrations\nThe Durham Wildlife Trust stand\nA display of historic meadow photos from The Fitzhugh Library\nThe Teesdale Special Flora Trust stand\nA botany walk around the meadows\nMeadow-themed activities for children \nHigh Nature Value farming practices in the uplands mean that many of these meadows are managed in much the same way that they have been for generations. These farming practices protect the unique habitats of the North Pennines whilst also producing high quality food. Whilst the management regime of meadows is similar now to 200 years ago\, the machinery available to farmers has changed beyond all recognition from scythes to large tractors and mowers\, and from handmade pikes of hay to modern balers. \nNo need to book\, all children must be supervised by an adult. The event is not suitable for dogs. \nLow Way Farm\, Holwick\,  Middleton-in-Teesdale\, DL12 0NJ.\nWhat 3 Words: access for cars ///addicted.proven.encloses\, access on foot from Middleton or Bowlees via Pennine way ///dark.releasing.going \n \n
