SUMMARY:Photogrammetry - training and volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Do you have an interest in the historic environment and lead mining heritage of the North Pennines and a passion about its conservation? We have an exciting opportunity to volunteer with us and be trained in photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is an important method of recording historic buildings in a relatively quick\, but highly detailed way. Using photographs to create 3D digital models allows the tracking of any changes to the condition to the building\, as well as creating a record of any important features. \nThere will be a free two-day training workshop in photogrammetry which will teach you everything you need to know about creating 3D digital models of historic structures. The dates are 3 and 4 May. This workshop will be run by Jon Bedford\, one of Historic England’s photogrammetry specialists. The first day will be based indoors where you will learn what photogrammetry is\, how it is used\, and how you can create your own models. The second day will be spent on site at a historic structure where you can put what you’ve learned into practice while still working under Jon’s supervision and guidance. \nAn optional third day in August (date tbc) will be offered to attendees of this workshop to allow you to come back to Jon with any questions or issues about the process once you’ve had a chance to practice your new skills. \nPlease note\, spaces on this workshop are only available to North Pennines volunteers who have signed up to the photogrammetry volunteering role on Better Impact here. \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Herdship
DESCRIPTION:An outdoor exhibition celebrating hill farming\, which is on display adjacent to the Langdon Beck Hotel in Upper Teesdale. \nPhotographer Joanne Coates spent a year documenting the farming year in Upper Teesdale as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme being delivered by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. \nFor this unique insight into the working life of hill farmers\, tenant farmers Paul and Jen Johnson welcomed Joanne Coates to their Upper Teesdale farm\, Herdship\, on the Raby Estate. The resulting photographs will be exhibited a short distance down the dale in the field at the Langdon Beck Hotel\, from Wednesday 10 June to Sunday 4 June. Entry is free and there is parking at the hotel. \nTwenty images of life\, work\, and the natural year at Herdship will be on display\, set into the landscape high in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The large format images have been mounted on posts which will be repurposed for tree guards at the end of the exhibition.

SUMMARY:BeeWalk Training with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for adult volunteers to undertake BeeWalks in the area and we’re offering a free one-day course for both beginners and those with experience to learn about the identification of all 24 British bumblebees. The course takes place on 10 May from 9.30am to 2.30pm\, at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning and along the Pennine Way in the afternoon.  The walks and training follow the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s (BCT) survey methodology and training will include information on the national BeeWalk scheme. \nEach BeeWalk would be approximately 1 to 2 km long\, encompassing a variety of habitats including a selection of upland hay meadows\, woodland\, or roadside verges.  The BeeWalks take place from May to September\, bi-weekly\, and can be carried out individually or paired with another volunteer. The aim is to monitor a selection of meadows pre- and post-restoration to see the impacts upon pollinator abundance\, whilst also adding vital data to a countrywide programme run by the BCT. \nContact Molly for more information: molly@northpenninesaonb.org.uk.\nPlease sign up using our Better Impact volunteer system  \n  \n \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Green finance workshop: is the conservation sector ready?
DESCRIPTION:This event is being organised by the North Pennines AONB Partnership as part of its Pennine PeatLIFE project. This workshop aims to focus minds in the nature conservation world on the approaching wave of private sector/blended finance that is now becoming widely available to our organisations\, if only we had the right approaches\, contacts and vocabulary to match our pipelines of investible propositions. The workshop will examine the opportunities\, challenges\, threats and constraints currently being experienced at the delivery level\, with a focus on peatland restoration work in the UK as a demonstrator. The workshops will conclude with a set of actions for the relevant bodies to review and make happen\, so that two things can be realised: a) the envisioned upscaling of ecosystem restoration in the UK and b) the Government’s ambitions around private / blended finance making a real contribution to nature recovery.\nThe planned programme is interactive and will consist of a blend of presentations\, workshops\, and time to network with speakers and colleagues. Current speakers confirmed include Alan Law – Natural England Chief Officer of Strategy\, Dianna Kopansky from the United Nations Environment Programme – Global Peatlands Initiative\, Stephen Fern – Chairman of Ark2030\, Nature Finance expert Dan Hird\, and Dr Tim Thom – Natural Capital Advisor for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. More speakers will be announced shortly; in the meantime you can book your ticket today. \nThe workshop is designed for policy makers\, senior representatives of delivery organisations\, and senior conservation agency and eNGO staff. It isn’t intended to be a session for ‘blue sky thinking’ or academia\, nor is it aimed primarily at investors. \nTickets are £50 each. A small number of bursary tickets will be available for people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to attend; please contact anna.trant@landscapesforlife.org.uk for more information. \nWe have a limited number of exhibitor spaces at the workshop. These are free to organisations that fit the workshop theme. For further information contact anna.trant@landscapesforlife.org.uk.

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Hazel panel making workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are building a small stargazing pavilion on the south-eastern side of Talkin Tarn as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme with Pons Aelius\, the designers and makers\, and Carlisle City Council. \nThe pavilion is to be constructed in timber\, echoing ancient ‘roundhouse’ construction\, with hazel panels wrapped around the outside. All the materials used in the construction are to be sourced locally. The stargazing pavilion will be co-constructed with volunteers who will be making the hazel panels that will encase the green wood uprights and seating. \nGreen woodworker\, Shannon Berry\, will lead the hazel panel making workshops. She is passionate about encouraging people into green woodworking and supporting the skills\, heritage and the makers that produce those products which offer a sustainable choice. During the 3-day workshops there will be a progression of knowledge and skills as the hazel panels needed for the build are made. \nYou must be 18 years or over to take part. We anticipate groups of sixteen people on each 3-day workshop. There is a camping area and local accommodation available. We will provide basic packed lunches and a hot meal in the evening. SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Geological and condition survey at Long Meg
DESCRIPTION:One of Long Meg’s many mysteries is where did people\, 5\,000 years ago\, find all the stones to drag to the site? Working with a small team of geologists\, we will carefully examine all 68 of Long Meg’s Daughters and record the geological structure of each. Using this information\, we will then attempt to work out the likely sources of the stones\, and whether they may have been dumped close to the site by glaciers during the Ice Age. At the same time\, we will record any damage around each stone (eg by rabbits) and this information will be used to plan conservation work. \nVolunteers need no previous experience\, just plenty of enthusiasm to learn more about Long Meg. Professional archaeological and geological supervision will be available on both days. In order to participate in the survey\, volunteers will need to be able to walk around the site\, use a basic camera\, and complete survey forms. Background information will be provided to all participants prior to the survey. \nThe weather in late May in the Eden Valley can be gorgeously hot and sunny\, or more like midwinter. Everyone taking part should check the forecast and wear appropriate clothing. Strong waterproof boots are recommended. \nMeet in the new Long Meg car park at 10am\, finish 5pm (possibly earlier depending on speed of survey\, weather etc). Bring your own packed lunch. \nBook a place via our Better Impact volunteer database here\, if you have already registered on Better Impact. \nRegister on Better Impact here.

SUMMARY:Mapping the stars in the tarn
DESCRIPTION:We are building a small stargazing pavilion on the south-eastern side of Talkin Tarn as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme with Pons Aelius\, the designers and makers\, and Cumberland Council. \nJoin us and artist\, Dominic Smith\, for a special event creating panels for a temporary roof for the pavilion. Working with photographic panels and found natural materials the light sensitive panels will map the constellation of stars to be seen from the pavilion at the summer equinox. \nEach roof panel is made from special photographic material that changes shade according to the daylight levels at the time of its creation. Each of the nine panels will take 30 minutes to create. The roof will be installed on the pavilion at the end of the day. \nThis free event will take place outdoors\, it is accessible to all and no experience/skills are required. Drop-in at anytime during the day\, no booking required.
