SUMMARY:High Helbeck estate ramble (2 miles)
DESCRIPTION:Join the North Pennines AONB Partnership on an early evening walk to explore part of the little known High Helbeck Estate. As well as discussing the current work taking place on the estate\, we will be keeping our eyes and ears open for any wildlife we might come across\, particularly upland wading bird species. Please bring binoculars if you have them\, although we will have some spares. \nThe High Helbeck Green Recovery Fund Project is a partnership project between estate owners Ben & Nicolete Blackett-Ord\, the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the RSPB\, the Woodland Trust and Natural England. The Defra-backed project runs from January 2021 to March 2022 and a key part of the scheme is to deliver significant biodiversity benefits to the High Helbeck estate (near Brough\, Cumbria) including 80 hectares of peatland restoration\, an increase in trees and scrub\, covering 153 hectares\, and a series of small wetlands to enhance 85 hectares of habitat for breeding wading birds. \nThe route is just over 2 miles long and follows the same route back. The walk does follow a fairly well trodden route\, but the terrain can be uneven and boggy in places. Due to the mixed terrain and topography\, a good basic level of fitness is required. Please ensure you dress for the weather and bring sturdy walking boots. No food or drink is provided and there are no toilet facilities on site. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nMeeting Point – Deadman Gill Layby – grid reference – NY823188. If you are unsure of directions\, please contact Chris Jones (cjones@northpenninesaonb.org.uk). Please car share where possible as parking is very limited. \nThe route is just over 2 miles long and follows the same route back. SUMMARY:Teesdale Pollinator Surveying: BeeWalk Training
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme we are looking for volunteers to undertake a series of BeeWalks once a week over a six to eight week period. This first Teesdale training session is open to those who already have basic bumblebee identification skills either from attending our webinar on the 5th of May or previous training. \nStarting from Bowlees Visitor Centre we will walk down to Low Force and along The Pennine Way towards Middleton-in-Teesdale where there will be lots of early flowering plants. The first hour will cover basic bumblebee identification including catching bumblebees using nets and identifying them in pots. During the second half of the afternoon\, we will cover the methodology of a BeeWalk whilst walking a one-mile stretch of The Pennine Way. \nVolunteers will need to commit to undertaking specific BeeWalks next to a meadow that will have seed addition this summer. The walks are to be undertaken once a week over a six to eight week period and locations\, maps etc. will be provided. We hope volunteers will continue to undertake the same BeeWalks in future so we can see how the bumblebee diversity increases as wildflower diversity increases. \nTees-Swale is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and led by the North Pennines AONB Partnership in collaboration with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. \nPlaces are limited and booking is essential – please use the link below to book your place. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Watercolours of the northern hills
DESCRIPTION:Ann Whitfield: Watercolours of the northern hills\n17 May to 30 June\nAnn draws her inspiration from the remote Northern landscape\, the wild places\, ravaged by time and weather. The paintings of the North Pennines in this exhibition show some of the places she loves the most. Most are familiar to anyone who walks the hills. Some are just fragments\, rocks or trees along the way\, others seek to share the exhilaration of a moment in the wide empty landscape special to this area. \nAnn’s exhibition runs from 17 May until 30 June 2021. There is no need to book. The exhibition is open when the Visitor Centre is\, daily from 10am to 4pm.

SUMMARY:Working on land within SSSIs and Agri-environment schemes
DESCRIPTION:Training for agricultural contractors & land managers in the Tees-Swale area.\n \nA  chance to learn more about SSSIs and agri-environment schemes and what to be aware of when working on these areas. The Tees-Swale naturally connected programme area has a significant amount of land designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and high uptake of agri-environment schemes such as Higher Level Stewardship and Countryside Stewardship. It is therefore important that contractors are aware of the implications of working in these areas. \n  \nDuring this training session for agricultural contractors and land managers\, a presentation will give an overview of SSSIs and agri-environment schemes and the related legislation/regulations\, followed by a Q&A session.  There will be a chance to learn more about the North Pennines AONB Partnership’s Tees-Swale naturally connected programme and the opportunities for agricultural contractors to get involved. \n  \nThe event is free to attend and will be run online as a Zoom meeting. If you are interested in attending please contact: \nPatrick Oulton (Tees-Swale Farming and Nature Officer) \npatrick@northpenneinesaonb.org.uk

DESCRIPTION:As part of the Fellfoot Forward Community Buildings Project\, volunteers Tom Speight and Richard Johnstone share their experience of restoring the Watson Institute in Castle Carrock. \nBuilt in 1897 as a reading room\, the Watson Institute faces onto the village green and sits at the heart of the Castle Carrock community. During this online talk with images and short film clips\, Tom and Richard will tell the story of the institute’s fascinating history and the journey they have been on\, sharing respectively what they see as two key aspects of the project – community engagement and the physical restoration works. \nThey will touch on the challenges\, highlight “top tips” for other community buildings\, how they funded it and low carbon energy efficiency measures – like new heat pumps\, double gazing\, traditional lime pointing\, LED lights\, and underfloor insulation. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. \nThis is an online event using the ZOOM platform. You will receive your link and information for logging on 24 hours before the event\, therefore booking is essential. To book your place\, use the link below or click here.

SUMMARY:Owls in the Fellfoot Forward area webinar
DESCRIPTION:Fellfoot Forward volunteer John Miles shares his experience of working in the area from the early eighties with owls\, and with the North Cumbria Barn Owl group. The area is fortunate to have many of the habitats that owls require\, although sadly one species has declined to such an extent that it is now rarely seen. \nLearn more about these silent predators\, five species of which breed in the UK. The Barn Owl\, Tawny Owl\, Long-eared Owl\, and Short-eared Owl are native to Britain\, and the Little Owl was introduced in the late 1800s. The small numbers of Eagle Owl which breed here are thought to be escapees or deliberate releases. \nThis is an online event using the ZOOM platform. SUMMARY:Upland wader identification webinar
DESCRIPTION:Through the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme we are hosting an online event looking at upland breeding waders on 10 March at 6pm. \nLapwing\, Curlew\, Redshank\, Snipe and Oystercatcher are all nationally threatened and on the Birds of Conservation Concern (BoCC) red or amber list. The upland habitats within Teesdale and Swaledale represent one of their few remaining strongholds in the UK and these species are dependent on the uplands for breeding habitat. \nJanet Fairclough and Liz Charman from the RSPB will talk about the birds found on upland farms in Teesdale and Swaledale\, why they are important and how to identify them. We will also provide a brief overview of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme and the opportunities for farmers/landowners and members of the public to get involved.

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Camera Trapping webinar
DESCRIPTION:Learn about camera trapping\, including where to set up your camera\, using fieldcraft skills\, downloading and storing images\, how to identify species\, and recording your findings for science and county wildlife records. The webinar will also include an informal Q&A session and a demo of how to set up and use one of the new communal use cameras (which will be available to loan through the Fellfoot Forward LPS). \nCamera traps\, or trail cameras\, are remote cameras that will take still photos or video clips of mammals\, birds\, and\, sometimes\, reptiles. They are triggered by a combination of motion and infra-red heat and are particularly effective at night\, revealing wildlife that you may have no idea is around your local area. Cameras can be used in gardens but are best used on trails where animals cross becks\, walls and other obstructions on their favourite travel routes. \nA link to a training film (filmed at an existing camera site in the Fellfoot Forward area)\, as well as highlights of what you might find and see\, will be available in advance of the event on the Fellfoot Forward Facebook group and the North Pennines AONB website. We recommend that anyone registering for the event watches the film before the webinar (in case of any broadband issues on the night).  \nThis is an online event using the ZOOM platform. SUMMARY:Armchair archaeology - introducing LIDAR
DESCRIPTION:*Bookings are now CLOSED – if you would like a last minute place\, please email samantha@northpenninesaonb.org.uk \nJoin us for a lunchtime archaeology session on Wednesday 16 December at 12.30pm via ZOOM (running time approx. 40mins). In anticipation of the launch of the Fellfoot Forward Uncovering the Past project in 2021 and forthcoming training and workshop events\, local historian Bruce Bennison will take us through an introduction to LIDAR. \nLIDAR is one of a number of new survey techniques\, available to amateur and professional archaeologists\, and one which can be explored through the comfort of your own home on these dark winter nights. Careful examination of detailed landscapes captured by LIDAR has revealed previously unknown sites whether prehistoric or more recent\, such as evidence for early industry across Cumbria. Using examples of what can be seen just within the Fellfoot area\, Bruce will help set the scene for some exciting opportunities to learn more and get involved with Uncovering the Past\, during 2021. \nBruce Bennison is a retired local government officer living in Newbiggin\, just north of Croglin\, in the heart of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership scheme area. Bruce has lived in the area for over 20 years\, now in retirement\, he is a valued volunteer as part of the scheme. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England. We have developed Fellfoot Forward with local communities and organisations\, and in 2020 the scheme was awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThis is an online talk using the ZOOM platform\, you will receive your link and information for logging on 24 hours before the event\, therefore booking is essential. SUMMARY:Exploring Andromeda: North Pennines Stargazing Week 2020 launch event
DESCRIPTION:Andromeda is the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way. It was first noticed in ancient times as a faint smudge in the sky and that’s how it looks when you see it from the dark skies of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and UNESCO Global Geopark. In this talk\, science educator and astronomer\, Andy Gray will be explaining how you can see and photograph the Andromeda Galaxy and how it compares to our home galaxy. He’ll also wonder about the chances of alien life watching us from there. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Week 2020\, a celebration of the dark skies in the darkest mainland AONB.

SUMMARY:North Pennines Tourism Forum 2020
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED EVENT \nNorth Pennines Tourism Forum 2020: The North Pennines – a slow tourism destination?\nTuesday 20 October 2020: 10am to 12noon (please join online from 9.45 am)\nVirtual\, via Zoom\nAdvance booking essential  \nOur theme this year is ‘slow tourism’ and we’ll be exploring whether this approach fits with what we have to offer to visitors to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and UNESCO Global Geopark. We will also see what the concept of ‘slow’ has to offer the North Pennines as we look to recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. \nYou have probably heard about slow food (local\, quality\, fresh) but what images are conjured up when you think about slow tourism or slow travel? Perhaps there was an unconscious negative association… fast = success\, right? Is taking things more slowly a good thing? \n“We have lost our sense of time. We believe that we can add meaning to life by making things go fast. We have an idea that life is short – and that we must go faster to fit everything in… the problem is that we don’t know how to spend our time wisely.” \n\nCarlo Petrini\, Founder of the Slow Food Movement\n\nSlow tourism is all about slowing down to take time to enjoy more. It is being concerned about the environment and taking the time to immerse yourself in a destination. Above all it is about the quality of experience and not about the quantity.\n\nKeynote speaker \nWe are delighted that our keynote speaker is Davina Stanford – Course Director for Responsible Tourism Management at Leeds Beckett University. She will be exploring the concept of slow tourism\, drawing on her extensive experience working as a tourism consultant\, and how it can be applied to emerging rural destinations\, such as the North Pennines. \nBusiness perspectives\nNext we will hear from Daniel Holder from the award-winning Quiet Site\, Ullswater. Daniel will be looking at the future of slow in the new COVID-19 normal. Michelle Gorman\, Managing Director of Visit County Durham\, will share a Destination Management Organisation perspective. Michelle will be speaking about the Northern Saints Trails and will reflect on the role of slow in building back better. \nFellfoot Forward and the Geotours app\nWe’ll wrap up with two presentations from the AONB Partnership. Firstly\, Fiona Knox will look at the recently launched Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme project and how we’ll be embracing slow tourism. Secondly\, Naomi Foster will take a look at the new Geotours app and the international collaboration which has developed the European Atlantic Geotourism Route. \nQ&A \nAfter the presentations delegates will be invited to put their thoughts and questions to the speakers – providing an opportunity to explore what the concept of ‘slow’ could bring to developing and marketing the North Pennines as a tourism destination. \nGet involved\nShane Harris\, Responsible Tourism Lead for the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, said: “It’s a challenging time to be involved in tourism in the AONB. The pandemic and all the associated restrictions have been a huge burden for all visitor economy businesses operating in the area. The 2020 North Pennines Tourism Forum will explore the concept of ‘slow tourism’ and how the approach might complement the area’s special qualities. We will also explore how looking at the visitor economy through the prism of ‘slow’ may help us to craft the area’s visitor offer\, as we move towards recovery after the pandemic.” \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward LPS Welcome Event: The Reservoir Story\, an evening zoom talk with Tom Speight
DESCRIPTION:On July 22nd\, 1909\, Castle Carrock had a party. The Mayor of Carlisle was in town\, along with 150 of the great and good from his city. They had descended on the sleepy Pennine village to celebrate the opening of a brand new reservoir –  “the greatest undertaking of which the city of Carlisle had ever embarked upon”. Over 700 navvies had spent 6 years building a brand new water supply system for the city\, commissioned by the Carlisle Corporation to quench the thirst of an expanding metropolis.  \nJoin local resident\, historian and poet\, Tom Speight\, in a 45 minute illustrated talk sharing an 111-year-old story of how and why the reservoir was built\, who built it – and at what cost. \nThis event offers a prelude to the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme’s historic and cultural projects including Uncovering the Past\, a community archaeology and local history programme that will start in Spring 2021. \nOnce booked\, you will receive a confirmation of your place and 24 hrs before the talk you will receive your zoom login\, via email. Only one booking is required per household. \nLed by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme is a major project to conserve\, enhance and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of a special part of the North West of England. The scheme is worth £3.5 million\, largely funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund\, which brings together local\, regional and national organisations\, communities\, and individuals to conserve\, enhance and champion this outstanding landscape and its rural community. \nFor more information/queries\, email: samantha@northpenninesaonb.org.uk
