DESCRIPTION:Join us for a session of sorting and sowing wildflower seeds on 31 October\, 10am to 3.30pm at Cotherstone Village Hall\, DL12 9PU. We will be sowing seeds from important species such as great burnet that have been collected from existing populations in Teesdale. All training and equipment will be provided. \nOnce grown these plants will be used to enhance upland hay meadows in Teesdale. \nTea\, coffee and light refreshments will be provided but please bring your own packed lunch. \nPlease sign up using the volunteer platform Better Impact \n \nDelivered as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme. DESCRIPTION:The event will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer at Grassholme Observatory\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. \nAfter the welcome Gary will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nWith no Moon in the sky\, you will look out for the Milky Way\, and many deep sky objects like galaxies\, nebulae and star clusters. You will then use the robotic telescope to scour the skies for other jewels in the cosmos. \nThen it’s back into the classroom for a hot drink and questions. Bring warm clothes – it can get chilly when we are outside. SUMMARY:Dark skies run
DESCRIPTION:Discover the freedom of trail running at night in the company of experienced runners\, as we follow the route of the High Force and Bowlees Geotrail. From Low Force we will run the Pennine Way to High Force. After soaking in the atmosphere of this magical place\, under the cover of darkness\, we will cross fields back to Bowlees Visitor Centre for tea and cake in front of the fire. \nThis is a\, guided\,  5-mile (8km) trail run over uneven\, rocky\, muddy and slippery ground. \nHead torches\, (trail) running shoes and full-body waterproofs will be required. No dogs allowed. Learn about the magic of the ‘Wood Wide Web’\, mycelium and mycorrhizal relationships\, improving your knowledge and understanding of this mystical world. \nAll materials and equipment will be provided. Please wear sturdy footwear\, and clothing suitable for the weather. Optional to bring baskets and mushroom puns. \nSuitable for children aged five plus. DESCRIPTION:Plug plants are young plants\, and with help from volunteers the plants have been looked after for at least 12 months and are grown in deep rooting pots. Plants are grown from local provenance seed  hand collected  from species rich meadows\, banks and roadsides in Teesdale. \nWe have various opportunities throughout autumn to help plug planting wildflowers into upland hay meadows in Teesdale. All training will be provided. \nA general level of fitness is required\, please wear outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes. DESCRIPTION:Join the team at the North Pennines Observatory for this family friendly creative introduction to astronomy – bringing together art and science to explore the constellations and our near planets as viewed from the North Pennines. \nGuest astronomer\, Roy Alexander\, will start with a beginner’s guide around the night sky. If the sky is clear you’ll be outside looking up with laser pointers to identify the cosmos looking in particular\, for Saturn\, Jupiter and the constellations of Taurus\, the Seven Sisters\, and much\, much more. If it’s cloudy\, no worries we’ll use our astronomy software and big screen projection to show you a virtual image of the ‘live’ sky that night. \nBut it won’t stop there\, ACA’s creative director and artist Alan Smith will overlap with Roy to take you back through art history looking at how humankind has creatively interpreted the cosmos through some incredible artwork. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the dark skies of the North Pennines and join us for a free mine trip like no other at this evening event held at Nenthead Mines\, Nr Alston\, Tuesday 29 October\, 4pm to 8pm. \nDuring this workshop you will learn how to make your own paper lantern that you will get to take away with you. Following the workshop you will then be able to walk in the footsteps of miners past\, and process through the mine using your lantern. \nThis includes an underground tour of the mine led by knowledgeable volunteers from Nenthead Mines Conservation Society. \nAccessibility information: the walk through the mine site and the underground portion is generally level and flat. The underground tour is generally tall enough to walk at full height\, although the first approximately 30m requires you to duck as this is the shortest part of the mine. There are two short ladders to climb as part of the mine tour which have handrails and are firmly installed. Suitable for children ages 7+. His stories take people deeply into the world so that they experience being a part of its elements\, drawing on our inter-connectedness with all its wonder\, mystery\, grief and joy. \nNeill Sanders\, from Go Stargazing\, shares his expertise and enthusiasm for astronomy with interesting space facts\, a laser-pen guided tour of the night and presents the opportunity for you to explore the secrets of the sky using high-tech telescopes. *Visibility is weather dependent. \nHot beverages and food available (donation) or you can bring your own. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk through a historic landscape at a relaxed pace on the last Saturday of each month. \nThe walk starting at Waskerley\, on 26 October will begin at 10.30am and finish at approximately 12.30pm. SUMMARY:Farming and nature talk: Can farming ever be truly nature-friendly?
DESCRIPTION:This winter we are holding a series of evening talks with the theme of examining the links between farming and nature. The talks\, held at The Moorcock Inn in Eggleston\, 7.30pm to 9pm\, are open to farmers and landowners as well as members of the public. Each evening there will be an invited speaker with the opportunity of discussion afterwards. \n“Can farming ever be truly nature-friendly”\, Wednesday 16 October\, with guest speaker Neil Heseltine will give us an overview of his experiences of nature-friendly farming. Neil is a farmer from Hill top farm near Malham and the previous Chair of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. He works closely with The Pasture-Fed Livestock Association (PFLA) and The Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN). \nThe first talk of the season will be slightly shorter as we will be holding the High Nature Value (HNV) awards ceremony afterwards with Professor Sir John Lawton presenting the winners of the High Nature Value (HNV) farming awards. \nEveryone welcome\, booking required. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of removing old tree guards and recycle on a site on the south of Selset reservoir. A lovely site over looking Selset reservoir in Lunedale. \nThere are two opportunities to volunteer – Friday 4 October and Wednesday 9 October\, 10am to 2pm\, (finish time may be earlier depending on weather). \nThe site is on uneven terrain\, a good level of fitness is needed. All equipment and training will be given on the day. Lunch is included\, but please bring any other refreshments and a drink. Please note there are no toilet facilities at this site. Suitable for 18+. \nOutdoor clothing to be worn and bring waterproofs. Ideally wear long sleeved top and long trousers due to midges and other insects in the longer grass and rushes. Wear sturdy shoes\, the site can be wetter in some places. \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact Volunteer system \n  \n       \n

SUMMARY:Wildflower seed sowing days
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a drop in session of sorting and sowing wildflower seeds at Mickleton Village Hall\, on 2 and 15 October\, 10am to 3.30pm. All training and equipment will be provided. \nWe will be sowing seeds from important species such as devil’s-bit scabious and wood crane’s-bill that have been collected from existing populations in Teesdale. Once grown these plants will be used to enhance upland hay meadows in Teesdale. \nTea\, coffee and light refreshments will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch. All ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Saturday stroll - a guided walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walk through a historic landscape at a relaxed pace on the last Saturday of each month. \nThis walk will be from Bollihope on 28 September\, beginning at 10.30am and finishing at approximately 12.30pm. You are welcome to join us after the walk for free refreshments finishing by 2pm. \nAll ages are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult and must be able to walk or be carried as the paths may not be suitable for pushchairs). Well behaved dogs on a short lead are welcome. The walks will be approximately 3 miles in length on mostly flat ground and with rest breaks along the way. The final details of the walk are subject to change\, please check back closer to the event for final details. \nOptional donation – suggested amount £2. SUMMARY:Adder survey opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to contribute to the conservation of adders in the North Pennines National Landscape?\nWe are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to complete surveys of this iconic reptile\, which is now vulnerable to extinction in England\, as part of our ‘Adders Up’ project. \nVolunteers must attend a training session before being assigned surveys. Link to online webinar – Upcoming Events –Adders\, ecology and survey techniques \nThere are four opportunities to volunteer at Cuthbert’s Moor (Durham Wildlife Trust):\n4 August\, 4\, 17 and 28 September 9am to 12 noon. \nThe surveys are ideally suited for adults\, under 16’s must be supervised by an adult. Walking distances are short\, but potentially over un-even terrain and on slopes. Please wear sturdy boots\, outdoor clothing appropriate for the weather\, bring snacks and drinks and a fully charged mobile phone. No toilets / amenities are present on the sites.
