SUMMARY:Jupiter and Saturn – the giant planets
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 27 October 8pm to 11pm  as on these dark starry nights\, we are treated to a planetary delight as these 2 celestial heavyweights line up for our telescopes. \nJupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and could swallow ~1300 Earths\, this gas giant planet is a turbulent environment as it spins on its axis once every 9.5 hours – this makes it the fastest rotating object in our solar system. Due to this exceptional rotational period\, Jupiter has a very turbulent surface with high-speed winds whipping its surface up into a visual drama on a cosmic scale. With bands and belts\, transition regions\, and big red spots\, Jupiter has it all\, and Grassholme Observatory has the kit to bring it alive. \nNext is by far most people’s favourite. Saturn with its glorious ring system dazzles the observer with a veritable observing feast! \nGet wrapped up – it can get chilly when we are outside! This is a pet free event\, so please don’t bring any furry friends! \nVisit https://www.grassholmeobservatory.com/book to book and for full terms and conditions. \nAdult: £24/ Concessions: £21/ Adult: 16+/ Concession: 65+\, under 16 years or Blue Badge holder. Pre-booking is essential. \nFor directions visit www.grassholmeobservatory.com/contact/ \nGrassholme Observatory is wheelchair accessible and there are accessible toilets on site. For more information about Grassholme Waterside Park visit https://www.watersideparksuk.com/park/grassholme/ \nThis Grassholme Observatory event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 20 October to 5 November 2023 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest23 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Stargazing experience at High Force waterfall
DESCRIPTION:**Note that there is another session on this date: 7.45 to 9.45pm. If when you visit the Star Safari booking website you can’t see one of these time slots that means they are fully booked and have been hidden from view.** \nEnjoy a night under the stars\, at a very special place. High Force is the largest waterfall in the country\, and is an awesome spectacle at any time of the day. At night\, though\, it is a special place you will remember for the rest of your life. \nPre-booking essential via https://www.starsafaris.com/highforce \nThe Star Safaris team will meet at the High Force Hotel\, for an indoor briefing and presentation\, before walking down to the waterfall together. On the way\, you will learn about the unique landscape and what makes it so special as a dark sky site. The skies above the waterfall are among the darkest in Europe\, and the surrounding cliffs ensure a truly dark experience. Your guide will light the waterfall up\, so you will be able to take selfies and other photographs with your phone. \nIf the sky is clear\, we will go dark as quickly as possible and start looking at the night sky. This will be done as a group experience\, by a guide\, with a laser pointer. Unlike observatory events\, you won’t spend your time queueing for a telescope. When conditions are especially clear\, we may use astronomy binoculars. \nYou will leave the event with a greater knowledge of the night sky\, and how to find key objects and constellations on your own. More than that\, though\, you will have spent some time in the dark at a spectacular natural location\, which is normally only accessible in daylight. \nUnfortunately\, because of limited space at the location\, do not bring camera tripods\, or dogs. Bring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one). \nNo minimum age – involves a 1.2km (round trip) walk on a gravel path. \nThis event run by Star Safaris is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 20 October to 5 November 2023 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest23 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Aurora night
DESCRIPTION:The event on 5 November 8pm to 11pm will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer at Grassholme Observatory\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. After the welcome Gary will take you on a whistle stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nOn certain nights we may even see the Aurora Borealis from Grassholme. It is visible in these skies. But the conditions have to be right for it to be seen and it’s a rare occurrence. Whilst it’s not guaranteed that you will see them – you will leave well equipped on what they are and how to spot them in the future. \nThis is a fun-filled night\, with stunning handouts\, experiments and stargazing with expert tuition from Gary and his team of astronomers. Get wrapped up – it can get chilly when we are outside! This is a pet free event\, so please don’t bring any furry friends! \nPre-booking essential via https://www.grassholmeobservatory.com/book and for full terms and conditions. \nAdult: £24/ Concessions: £20/ Adult: 16+/ Concession: 65+\, under 16s or Blue Badge holder. \nFor directions visit www.grassholmeobservatory.com/contact/ \nGrassholme Observatory is wheelchair accessible and there are accessible toilets on site.
