We require a minimum involvement of 1 full day of helping to survey a meadow following the training. \nBeginners should attend all three days\, if possible. More experienced botanists can choose which days to attend based on their previous experience. Volunteers need to sign-up to each of these 3 training days separately: \nDay 1: Wildflower Identification training\, Thursday 6 June.\nDay 2: Grasses and sedges Identification training\, Thursday 13 June.\nDay 3: Botanical surveys using quadrats training\, Thursday 20 June. \nThe morning will be spent at Bowlees Visitor Centre. In the afternoon there will be a botany walk along The Pennine Way. The training will be undertaken by Ruth Starr-Keddle\, if you have any queries\, please email: ruth@northpennines.org.uk. \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact volunteer system \n

SUMMARY:Reading the landscape
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day exploring how to read the landscape on Saturday 22 June\, 10am to 3pm. You will be introduced to geological maps\, how they are made and what they can show us with local geologist Brian Young. \nPlease note that the date has altered from 8 June to 22 June. \nThis event will involve a gentle walk of around 3 miles (4.5km) on footpaths starting at Bowlees Visitor Centre\, exploring the variety of rocks and features in the area and seeing how they affect the landscape and vegetation. Along the way\, you will have a go at creating your own geological map of the route. No prior geological knowledge is required\, just an interest in the countryside. \nThis will be a full day outdoors\, so please come dressed for the weather including sturdy shoes\, and bring water-proofs and lunch or snacks. Some sections of path are uneven and there are a couple of stiles to climb over along the route. Ideally suited for adults. £6 per person. \nThis event is part of North Pennines NatureFest running from Saturday 24 May to Sunday 9 June 2024 and celebrates European Geoparks Week. See the full programme at www.NorthPenninesNatureFest.org.uk #NorthPenninesNatureFest24 \nPlease book using the Ticketsource link \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n \n  \n© North Pennines National Landscape

SUMMARY:Meadows day at Low Way Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free family event on Saturday 13 July\, 10.30am to 3.30pm\, at Low Way Farm\, Holwick\, to celebrate the magnificent meadows and farming history of Teesdale. \nThe North Pennines National Landscape contains almost half of the remaining species-rich upland hay meadows in the UK. As well as being a rare and important habitat for wildflowers\, upland hay meadows also support a whole range of invertebrates and birds. \nWe want to celebrate this important habitat and its cultural history with a variety of fun activities suitable for all ages. Come along and enjoy: \nA display of farming machinery old and new\nA display of machinery used for meadow restoration\nScything demonstrations\nThe Durham Wildlife Trust stand\nA display of historic meadow photos from The Fitzhugh Library\nThe Teesdale Special Flora Trust stand\nA botany walk around the meadows\nMeadow-themed activities for children \nHigh Nature Value farming practices in the uplands mean that many of these meadows are managed in much the same way that they have been for generations. These farming practices protect the unique habitats of the North Pennines whilst also producing high quality food. Whilst the management regime of meadows is similar now to 200 years ago\, the machinery available to farmers has changed beyond all recognition from scythes to large tractors and mowers\, and from handmade pikes of hay to modern balers. \nNo need to book\, all children must be supervised by an adult. The event is not suitable for dogs. \nLow Way Farm\, Holwick\,  Middleton-in-Teesdale\, DL12 0NJ.\nWhat 3 Words: access for cars ///addicted.proven.encloses\, access on foot from Middleton or Bowlees via Pennine way ///dark.releasing.going \n \n
