We will start the day with a walk led by RSPB Conservation Advisor Janet Fairclough\, learning to identify and appreciate the bubbling call of the curlew. We will record our sightings on the iNaturalist app\, contributing to our conservation work. Back at the Visitor Centre there’s a chance to warm up with hot drinks and baked goods from the Falls Café. Then you will spend time with local artist Sara Cox on a creative journey to explore the shape and patterns of the curlew\, making a 3D mobile.\nRefreshments and art materials will be provided. We can provide binoculars\, although please feel free to bring your own. \nPlease note: \n\nThe walk will be over rough terrain.\nThe art activity will use blockprinting ink\, which may stain. Please ensure you wear clothing you are happy to get messy\, or bring an apron or artshirt.\nBring clothing and footwear for all weathers\, as the weather can be unpredictable. We have a selection of wellies and waterproofs if you don’t have your own.\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n \n  \nDelivered as part of the Tees-Swale: naturally connected programme. SUMMARY:Lime plaster training
DESCRIPTION:A one day workshop in which participants will be introduced to how lime works in every surface and element of a traditional building\, and how that can be maintained and improved. Hands-on sessions will cover mortar mixing\, repointing masonry\, plastering\, screeding floors\, and limewashing. \nThis training is aimed at people who have an interest in using lime and building up their skills to support community heritage restoration projects within the Fellfoot Forward LPS area\, especially community volunteers involved with the restoration and/or management of community buildings in the scheme area. \nParticipants have the opportunity to present their community or own buildings as case studies that we can assess and suggest actions for. We’ll discuss the effect of inappropriate materials on old buildings; what structural detailing they need; which modern products are compatible with lime\, and best practice\, timescales/scheduling of lime-work. \nThe training will be led by Gemma Sayers\, a lime and earth plasterer with ten years experience in earth\, stone\, straw and timber construction. Her role often entails structural repair work\, installing insulation\, underfloor heating screeds\, and traditional building maintenance. She has led many workshops as well as providing on site training and historic building consultation. Her vision is to demystify traditional building technology and empower people to get involved in the repair and construction of their buildings using natural materials. \nThe workshop will take place between 9am – 5pm at Eden Hot Lime Mortar\, Great Musgrave\, Kirkby Stephen. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: An Avian Obsession
DESCRIPTION:Artist Katherine Rodger will be displaying some of her paintings of British wild birds in the upstairs gallery at Bowlees Visitor Centre during April. \nAt the beginning of the first UK lockdown\, Katherine began posting a new bird painting every Friday on social media\, adding the hashtag #fridaybirdie. After a full year of painting a bird a week\, Katherine kept on painting birds and continues to combine her passion for painting with a love of birds. \nThe #fridaybirdie paintings have been reproduced as cards\, Giclee prints and homeware and are soon to be published in the ornithologist Michael Turner’s new book\, ‘A history of birds in the Derwent Valley’. \nKatherine has worked for over 30 years as an Artist/Designer\, Secondary School Art teacher\, Artist-in-Residence and Painting Tutor\, both in the UK and in New Zealand. \nBased in Rowlands Gill\, Katherine takes inspiration from the natural world\, particularly from the wild birds in her garden. Her studio is situated in the Stableblock at National Trust Gibside where she now focuses mainly on producing detailed paintings of birds\, set in colourful abstract backgrounds. \nOpen during Visitor Centre opening hours (daily 10am to 5pm). Not wheelchair accessible. \n@karo_paintings \n

SUMMARY:Improving the experiences of disabled visitors to the North Pennines
DESCRIPTION:A free online training event for tourism businesses and community groups in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This event will take place on 14 March between 10:30am – 2:30pm. (There will be a break for lunch between 1pm -1:30pm). The shorter session after lunch is an optional informal space to talk and reflect together on the training. \nThis workshop is aimed at improving the experience of disabled visitors to the area. We hope to support you to make proactive changes and to better handle unexpected situations when they arise.\nMost of our buildings are old and there are limitations on what can be done to make them physically more accessible. Yet ‘accessibility’ is so much more than lifts and ramps. For example\, 80% of disabled people have a hidden disability. \nIn this online workshop\, led by disabled trainers from Difference Northeast\, we will explore:\n– The different kinds of barriers that might be putting disabled visitors off\n– Media/mainstream attitudes to disabled people and how these might influence how we try to interact\n– How to offer help and when not to\n– Types of information to share to give people a clearer sense of what to expect. \nPlease contact scarlet@northpenninesaonb.org.uk if you have any queries. \n  \nClick here to book a free place. Places are available to book up until 1 day before the event. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Stars in the tarn launch 4 March
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch event of the ‘Stars in the tarn’ project where you can meet the team of designers\, makers\, and crafts people\, discuss the design of the stargazing pavilion\, and find out about your opportunities to get involved. \nDark skies are a key characteristic of the Fellfoot Forward area’s heritage and Carlisle City Council are keen to protect the dark skies at Talkin Tarn in support of wildlife\, dark sky events\, and to gain designation as a Dark Sky Discovery Site. \nWe have commissioned a stargazing pavilion at Talkin Tarn\, which will encourage people to use the site for stargazing and which can also be used during the daytime as a space for reflection. The stargazing pavilion draws upon the history and materials used in traditional round house construction to bring a new place to rest\, reflect and look up. \nThis is a drop-in event at Talkin Tarn education cabin between 10am – 2pm. All are welcome\, no booking required.
