Tonya’s work is a mix of realism and romanticism\, and while there is a traditional feel to her landscapes there is also a distinct contemporary influence. Alongside the paintings there will be information about their geological and historical context\, reflecting Tonya’s research into the traditions\, folk songs\, history\, and geography connected to each of the places she paints. \nDescribing her art practice\, Tonya said: “I work in oil because I love all it offers\, but\, as I started painting as a way of dealing with emotional pain\, the slow process of an oil painting proved very therapeutic. The hours of work and days of drying time may not be visible to the beholder\, but it gives me as an artist time to live with the painting that can typically be four to six months in the making. What many people do not realise is that oil paint is very environmentally friendly\, using only natural oils such as linseed and turpentine there is no plutonium in either the paint or the mixers just natural products.” \nBowlees Visitor Centre is run by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and is the perfect place to start exploring the walks\, waterfalls and wildlife in the local area\, or to inspire a trip further afield in the AONB. Vicky has worked in tourism since the mid-90s\, and sustainable tourism since the mid-00s\, in destinations\, marketing and ecommerce. She’s headed up operations abroad and online for major tour operators like Tui and Virgin Holidays\, online travel agents and media\, in package and specialist holidays\, ski\, tours\, charity challenges and voluntourism\, NGOs and sustainable tourism accreditation organisations. \nShe’s a qualified ranger in Africa\, charity challenge tour leader\, and acclaimed academic for her published MSc Responsible Tourism Management thesis on the online marketing and greenwashing of volunteer tourism. This exhibition illustrates the process of restoration\, and the nature and changing seasons seen by the team as they work. Drone shots give a sense of scale and at the other end of the spectrum\, close up images show the intricacies of plants like Sphagnum that make up the rich and biodiverse peatland. The North Pennines has the largest area of contiguous blanket bog in the country and the team works to restore the damage to help mitigate against climate change and flood risk. Healthy peatlands are vital\, and absorb carbon from the atmosphere\, filter water\, sustain wildlife and give the high landscapes of the North Pennines its distinctive appearance. High Force is the largest waterfall in the country\, and is an awesome spectacle at any time of the day. On the way\, you will learn about the unique landscape and what makes it so special as a dark sky site. The skies above the waterfall are among the darkest in Europe\, and the surrounding cliffs ensure a truly dark experience. Your guide will light the waterfall up\, so you will be able to take selfies and other photographs with your phone. \nIf the sky is clear\, we will go dark as quickly as possible and start looking at the night sky.
