SUMMARY:North Pennines Tourism Forum 2022
DESCRIPTION:The North Pennines – a regenerative destination?\n\nThursday 13 October 2022: 10am to 3pm (arrival\, registration\, tea/coffee from 9.40am)\nMelmerby Village Hall (Cumbria)\, £10 attendance cost (includes lunch and refreshments).\n\nWhat does sustainable tourism mean to you? What about responsible tourism? Nature tourism? Activity tourism? There’s now a new ‘kid on the block’ with Regenerative Tourism as the new buzz word in tourism circles. \nAt our 2022 Tourism Forum we’re asking if a regenerative approach is the way forward for the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and UNESCO Global Geopark? And if so – what does that mean for destination management? For business operation and future development? \nThis will be the first face-to-face North Pennines Tourism Forum since we went ‘digital’ in 2019 in Blanchland. It promises to be a thought-provoking event\, packed with networking opportunities and chances to influence future thinking. \nKeynote speaker \nOur keynote speaker is Vicky Smith – Founder of Earth Changers. Vicky has worked in tourism since the mid-90s\, and sustainable tourism since the mid-00s\, in destinations\, marketing and ecommerce. She’s headed up operations abroad and online for major tour operators like Tui and Virgin Holidays\, online travel agents and media\, in package and specialist holidays\, ski\, tours\, charity challenges and voluntourism\, NGOs and sustainable tourism accreditation organisations. \nShe’s a qualified ranger in Africa\, charity challenge tour leader\, and acclaimed academic for her published MSc Responsible Tourism Management thesis on the online marketing and greenwashing of volunteer tourism. In 2019 she was invited to be an Ambassador for the UK Government Department for Environment\, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Year of Green Action and won the Travelmole UK Responsible Travel & Tourism Best Website. She currently sits on the Trustee board for charity SEED Madagascar\, and helps the development team for the Global and European Ecotourism Networks. \nHer sustainable tourism start-up\, www.Earth-Changers.com\, features the life-changing places\, world-changing people and extraordinary experiences with purpose of some of the best positive impact\, sustainable\, regenerative tourism around the globe. \nDr Emma Pope will look at regenerating our relationship with nature through tourism. Emma has a PhD in Transformational Adventure Tourism and is passionate about the meaningful and memorable experiences that can happen through tourism and recreation. She uses the perspective of nature connection to explore how time spent outdoors can contribute to personal wellbeing and create an ongoing sense of care for the places and nature that provides this. The industry response will be provided by Sue Clarke from Cumbria Tourism. \nThere will also be an opportunity to find out more about recent and future tourism work from the North Pennines AONB Partnership – including the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme. \nGet involved \nThe day will include an opportunity to directly contribute to our collective thinking on how the North Pennines could adopt a more regenerative approach to tourism. We will do this in a number of small breakout groups. \nThe 2022 North Pennines Tourism Forum is supported by the AONB Partnership’s Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

SUMMARY:Precious peatlands
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of photographs from the North Pennines AONB Partnership’s peatland programme\n14 October 2022 to 31 March 2023 \nThe North Pennines AONB Partnership’s peatland programme has been established for over 16 years and has restored an area of damaged peatland three times the size of the city of Newcastle. This exhibition illustrates the process of restoration\, and the nature and changing seasons seen by the team as they work. Drone shots give a sense of scale and at the other end of the spectrum\, close up images show the intricacies of plants like Sphagnum that make up the rich and biodiverse peatland. The North Pennines has the largest area of contiguous blanket bog in the country and the team works to restore the damage to help mitigate against climate change and flood risk. Healthy peatlands are vital\, and absorb carbon from the atmosphere\, filter water\, sustain wildlife and give the high landscapes of the North Pennines its distinctive appearance. Photographs are by the North Pennines AONB Partnership\, and by Teesdale photographer Martin Rogers. \n

SUMMARY:Stargazing Experience at High Force Waterfall
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a night under the stars\, at a very special place. High Force is the largest waterfall in the country\, and is an awesome spectacle at any time of the day. At night\, though\,\nit is a special place you will remember for the rest of your life. \nThe Star Safaris team will meet at the High Force Hotel\, for an indoor briefing and presentation\, before walking down to the waterfall together. On the way\, you will learn about the unique landscape and what makes it so special as a dark sky site. The skies above the waterfall are among the darkest in Europe\, and the surrounding cliffs ensure a truly dark experience. Your guide will light the waterfall up\, so you will be able to take selfies and other photographs with your phone. \nIf the sky is clear\, we will go dark as quickly as possible and start looking at the night sky. This will be done as a group experience\, by a guide\, with a laser pointer. Unlike observatory events\, you won’t spend your time queueing for a telescope. When conditions are especially clear\, we may use astronomy binoculars. \nYou will leave the event with a greater knowledge of the night sky\, and how to find key objects and constellations on your own. More than that\, though\, you will have spent some time in the dark at a spectacular natural location\, which is normally only accessible in daylight. \nUnfortunately\, because of limited space at the location\, do not bring camera tripods\, or dogs. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nNo minimum age – involves a 1.2km (round trip) walk on a gravel path. SUMMARY:The dark side of the universe
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered what’s out there? Dr. Pete Edwards\, Director of Science Outreach at Durham University will guide you through! Tickets from £10 \n\n\n\n\n\nMost of our universe is missing! When we look into the night sky we realise there is much more out there than meets the eye. Our universe is filled with mysterious dark matter\, whose gravity provides the cosmic glue that holds it all together\, and dark energy\, which is slowly tearing the universe apart. It seems that darkness rules. But what is this dark stuff? How do we know it is there? What does it do? Durham University lecturer Dr. Peter Edwards will provide some answers. After the talk\, you’ll do some stargazing (sky conditions permitting) in the Observatory. \nWrap up warm and bring a red light torch (if you have one). Access to the North Pennines Observatory is via a steep access road and has limited space for parking – please park considerately in the village and walk up or call to reserve a parking space. Warm drinks provided. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22 #NPennDarkSkies \nPrices: \n£10 + booking fee for concessions \n£15 + booking fee general admission \n£40 + booking fee family (2 adults\, 2 children) \n\nBooking essential https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-dark-side-of-the-universe-tickets-405140304557

SUMMARY:Exploring our Milky Way
DESCRIPTION:The Milky Way is one of the most visually impactful objects observable in the night sky. To see it you must have inky black night skies (which we have) and no Moon in the\nsky – there’s no Moon tonight and so fingers crossed for clear skies! \nAt this time of year\, the Milky Way hangs high overhead\, and clearly visible are clusters of stars and dark nebulae that weave through the starfields of our home galaxy. Join the Grassholme Observatory team as we marvel at the visual beauty of them through our many telescopes. Observe different star colours and regions where new stars and planets are being forged. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nBook on the Grassholme Observatory website

You will also get a tour of the night sky\, from a guide with a laser pointer. \nYour guide will also show you how to use stargazing apps\, and will let you know which free ones to install\, before the event\, if that interests you. You will also be given a printed star chart for the month of the event\, which you can take home\, to help you remember what you have seen. Unfortunately\, because of limited space at the location don’t bring camera tripods\, or dogs. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nNo minimum age – involves a walk around the Plotters’ Forest. Contact Star Safaris for details (via https://www.starsafaris.com/site/contact). Cost £39.97. \nPre-booking essential via https://www.starsafaris.com/plotters

SUMMARY:The Plotters' Forest Milky Way shoot
DESCRIPTION:Exclusive access to a new attraction\, and dark sky site. Before we start\, yes that is a sky replacement edit. Of course it is! The Plotters’ Forest is a brand new attraction\, and no-one has been given photography or night access… until now. This is a one-off\, due to costs and availability\, so if you want to be one of the few with night shots from the Plotters’ Forest\, you need to reserve your place now. This workshop is timed perfectly for best visibility of the Milky Way\, conditions permitting\, of course! \nAll ability levels are welcome\, from absolute beginners and people who have dabbled with night photography\, to more experienced photographers. \nThe workshop also includes access to the entire castle grounds. So when you have finished in the forest\, you can get more iconic shots from the front of the castle\, or the ponds. \nThe beauty of taking photographs at night is that you start with a blank canvas\, and don’t have to allow for daylight. You can either shoot in available light\, or add your own with a torch (don’t worry we will show you how to do this). Cost £53 \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nPre-booking essential via https://www.photographyexperiences.com/plottersforest231022
