SUMMARY:Knitted smelters shawl workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us in honouring the legacy of the lead smelters and showcasing the timeless art of knitting. This workshop is being held at Rookhope Village Hall\, Rookhope on Saturday 22 June\, 1pm to 3pm\, and is suitable for adults. \nLast year\, artist Carole McCourt stumbled upon a fascinating photograph of a group of smelters at Rookhope Smelt Mill\, each donning a knitted shawl. This image sparked an idea: to celebrate this unique heritage skill and the rich history of lead smelters through a community project. Her vision is now coming to life as part of the North Pennines National Landscape’s Land of Lead and Silver project. \nThe workshop involves recreating a knitted shawl inspired by those in the historic photograph. Carole has developed a pattern that pays homage to the original shawls while allowing for creative expression. We are inviting local knitting groups and individual knitters to join us. \nWe will provide you with a pattern based on the historic shawls and some yarn to get you started. The pattern is designed to be simple enough for complete beginners\, but it also offers opportunities for experienced knitters to showcase their skills with techniques like Fair Isle and cabling. \nThis workshop is part of the 2024 Land of Lead and Silver community arts programme. Carole McCourt is one of four community arts bursary recipients. To find out more go to https://northpennines.org.uk/community-arts-2024/. \nPlease use the Ticketsource link to book. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Mining heritage condition surveying and monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Allen Mill in Allendale on 15 November\, 10am to 3pm\, with Tom Gledhill\, Heritage at Risk Officer\, Historic England\, to help us look at surveying the condition of historic sites of the North Pennines. \nAs part of the planned Land of Lead and Silver project we will be creating a methodology to help create a baseline survey of historic sites\, allowing us to monitor changes and risks in the future. \nIn this workshop we will look at the best methods to gather information on and report the condition of scheduled monuments. This work will also add to the records that Historic England holds about the lead mining monuments and buildings across the North Pennines. \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact volunteer platform. \n  \n       \n  \nPhoto used with kind permission from Ruth Wharton

SUMMARY:Traditional pinhole photography workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how pinhole photography works? Or how the silver which was once mined in the North Pennines is connected to photography? Join us for a workshop on 6 June 5pm to 8pm\, where you will not only learn the answers to these questions\, but you will have the chance to make a wearable camera obscura as well. This workshop is suitable for adults. \nIn this session led by artist Henry Iddon\, we’ll make these traditional cameras\, see how simple cameras work\, and then using a pinhole camera will take images of the former mining village of Allenheads and process them in a portable darkroom to create 5×4 inch negatives. \nPlease book a place using the link below. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n
