SUMMARY:Archaeology at Long Meg and her daughters stone circle
DESCRIPTION:Fascinated by history? Got an adventurous streak? Bring your family for a fun day out in the Fellfoot Forward area with the DigVentures team. \nAs part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme’s Uncovering the Pastproject\, DigVentures is helping young people explore the archaeology on their doorsteps in this community excavation. SUMMARY:Virtual tour of Long Meg and her daughters stone circle
DESCRIPTION:Take a virtual tour of Long Meg and her daughters\, one of Northern England’s finest stone circles and the fifth largest in the British Isles. \nEarlier this year\, archaeologists from DigVentures teamed up with the local community to build on geophysical survey done in this area\, which revealed some interesting anomalies. If you love history\, are curious about archaeology\, or would simply love to get a behind the scenes glimpse of this incredible site\, then come along to learn more about the ancient landscape of Cumbria. \nClick here to book a place.

This is a one-off\, due to costs and availability\, so if you want to be one of the few with night shots from the Plotters’ Forest\, you need to reserve your place now. This workshop is timed perfectly for best visibility of the Milky Way\, conditions permitting\, of course! \nAll ability levels are welcome\, from absolute beginners and people who have dabbled with night photography\, to more experienced photographers. \nThe workshop also includes access to the entire castle grounds. So when you have finished in the forest\, you can get more iconic shots from the front of the castle\, or the ponds. \nThe beauty of taking photographs at night is that you start with a blank canvas\, and don’t have to allow for daylight. You can either shoot in available light\, or add your own with a torch (don’t worry we will show you how to do this). Cost £53 \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nPre-booking essential via https://www.photographyexperiences.com/plottersforest231022

SUMMARY:The Plotters' Forest stargazing
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a night under the stars\, at this fabulous location. The Plotters’ Forest is the new treetop development at Raby Castle and\, for one night only\, Star Safaris have got access to the stargazing platform. The skies above Raby Castle are extremely dark\, and the Milky Way is clearly visible overhead\, like a rainbow of stars. \nYour Star Safaris guide will meet you in the car park\, before heading to the Yurt Café\, for an indoor briefing and presentation\, before walking down to the forest together. If the sky is clear\, you will start the outdoor session on the stargazing platform\, using high-tech smart telescopes\, which you can look through on your phone. You can even take photographs of what we’re looking at! You will also get a tour of the night sky\, from a guide with a laser pointer. \nYour guide will also show you how to use stargazing apps\, and will let you know which free ones to install\, before the event\, if that interests you. You will also be given a printed star chart for the month of the event\, which you can take home\, to help you remember what you have seen. Unfortunately\, because of limited space at the location don’t bring camera tripods\, or dogs. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nNo minimum age – involves a walk around the Plotters’ Forest. Contact Star Safaris for details (via https://www.starsafaris.com/site/contact). Cost £39.97. \nPre-booking essential via https://www.starsafaris.com/plotters

You’ll get to take part in a real\, live excavation together and help us to unearth the remains of a prehistoric stone circle. You’ll learn how to dig\, make your own discoveries\, and experience what it’s really like to be an archaeologist. Our team will guide your search for evidence and help you to piece it together as you try to solve a real archaeological mystery. It’s the perfect day out for any teen who wants to get outdoors and discover history for themselves. \nSuitable for families or youth groups with young people aged 12-17 who live in either the Carlisle or Eden districts. Groups of one adult and up to two teens can book (you can make more than one booking). \nThis dig is being generously funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund through the North Pennines AONB Partnership’s Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme and Cumbria County Council. \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:Exploring our Milky Way
DESCRIPTION:The Milky Way is one of the most visually impactful objects observable in the night sky. To see it you must have inky black night skies (which we have) and no Moon in the\nsky – there’s no Moon tonight and so fingers crossed for clear skies! \nAt this time of year\, the Milky Way hangs high overhead\, and clearly visible are clusters of stars and dark nebulae that weave through the starfields of our home galaxy. Join the Grassholme Observatory team as we marvel at the visual beauty of them through our many telescopes. Observe different star colours and regions where new stars and planets are being forged. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nBook on the Grassholme Observatory website

SUMMARY:The dark side of the universe
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered what’s out there? Dr. Pete Edwards\, Director of Science Outreach at Durham University will guide you through! Tickets from £10 \n\n\n\n\n\nMost of our universe is missing! When we look into the night sky we realise there is much more out there than meets the eye. Our universe is filled with mysterious dark matter\, whose gravity provides the cosmic glue that holds it all together\, and dark energy\, which is slowly tearing the universe apart. It seems that darkness rules. But what is this dark stuff? How do we know it is there? What does it do? Durham University lecturer Dr. Peter Edwards will provide some answers. After the talk\, you’ll do some stargazing (sky conditions permitting) in the Observatory. \nWrap up warm and bring a red light torch (if you have one). Access to the North Pennines Observatory is via a steep access road and has limited space for parking – please park considerately in the village and walk up or call to reserve a parking space. Warm drinks provided. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22 #NPennDarkSkies \nPrices: \n£10 + booking fee for concessions \n£15 + booking fee general admission \n£40 + booking fee family (2 adults\, 2 children) \n\nBooking essential https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-dark-side-of-the-universe-tickets-405140304557
