SUMMARY:BeeWalk training with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust - Teesdale pollinator surveying
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for adult volunteers to undertake BeeWalks in the area and we’re offering a free one-day training course\, for both beginners and those with experience\, to learn about the identification of all 24 British bumblebees. \nThe course takes place on 15 May from 9.30am to 4pm\, at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the morning and along the Pennine Way in the afternoon.  The walks and training follow the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s (BCT) survey methodology and training will include information on the national BeeWalk scheme. \nEach BeeWalk would be approximately 1 to 2 km long\, encompassing a variety of habitats including a selection of upland hay meadows\, woodland\, or roadside verges.  The BeeWalks take place from May to September\, bi-weekly\, and can be carried out individually or paired with another volunteer. The aim is to monitor a selection of meadows pre- and post-restoration to see the impacts upon pollinator abundance\, whilst also adding vital data to a countrywide programme run by the BCT. The BeeWalks will be coordinated by a member of the Tees-Swale Farming and Nature Team. \nPlease contact Willaim for more information: william@northpennines.org.uk.\nPlease sign up using our Better Impact volunteer system  \n

SUMMARY:Saturday stroll - NatureFest special
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Saturday stroll for North Pennines NatureFest celebrating the unique flora of the area. \nLocal artist Carole McCourt will lead a guided walk from Westgate\, Weardale\, 31 May\, 10.30am to 2.30pm\, to explore the delicate balance between geology and botany\, where plants have adapted to survive in challenging conditions. \nThe event begins with a short presentation\, followed by an easy walk learning about a variety of wildflowers\, grasses\, and lichens\, including rare lead-tolerant plants known as metallophytes. See species like Spring Sandwort (leadwort)\, Pyrenean Scurvy Grass\, Alpine Pennycress\, and Wild Mountain Pansies\, which thrive here in abundance during May to July. \nAfter the walk\, return for lunch and a creative workshop\, using art materials (provided) to capture the beauty of the landscape and its plants. \nPlease wear suitable footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather\, and bring a packed lunch and drinks. The event is suitable for families with children over the age of seven. Dogs on short leads are welcome. \nSuggested donation £3 per adult\, £2 per child. Your donation enables the North Pennines National Landscape team to protect and restore this special place and help people connect with nature. \nIf you have any accessibility requirements that would improve your experience of this event please email rebecca@northpennines.org.uk. \nPlease book using the link to Ticketsource \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n     \n  \nThis event is part of North Pennines NatureFest running from Saturday 24 May to Sunday 8 June 2025.
