SUMMARY:A Conversation with Nature - art installation by Jane Young
DESCRIPTION:Look out for a temporary art installation by Jane Young amongst the trees at Bowlees between 12th October and 30th November. \nAbout the artist\nJane Young is an artist based in Teesdale who is just at the end of studying MA Fine Art at University of Sunderland. Since 2012\, she has worked as an Artist and Creative Encourager in and around the North East of England. \nJane’s work focuses on art for health and wellbeing within the community. Over the last eighteen months\, and following the Covid-19 pandemic\, she has developed ways to engage the community in addressing concerns around the climate emergency and the threat to our environment\, and has explored how this approach links to states of health and wellbeing. Jane’s work is a collaboration with nature and draws attention to the fragility and beauty of the environment. \nHer installations have been created in the natural settings where she has taken her walks throughout the course of the pandemic and are recorded in a series of videos and photographs on Instagram: www.instagram.com/janeyoungart \nA Conversation with Nature\nJane says: \n“In my work I explore our relationship with the natural world – a voyage of discovery which in turn enables us to become more aware of ourselves. This creates a SelfScape – a keener sense of self and our part in the wider ecology of place which in turn can help with our own and the community’s sense of health and wellbeing. \n“It is my hope that the work I create will help ensure that the appreciation of the natural world does not disappear now that life is getting back to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic – indeed to make certain that\, into the future\, we develop a more sustainable way of living\, caring for and engaging with our environment; a new normal.” \n

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Village atlas
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to research historic villages and then use your skills to tell the story of Croglin\, Cumwhitton\, and Hayton in the Fellfoot Forward LPS area. \nThis short\, practical course delivered by our partner\, DigVentures\, will show you how to use historic sources\, maps\, and archaeological evidence to investigate how a village or parish evolved over hundreds or thousands of years. By taking part in this course\, you’ll learn new skills\, whilst also helping to document and celebrate the stories of these three villages by creating a ‘Village Atlas’ that can be used to share and present the history you’ve uncovered\, online or in person. \nPlease note: The course is delivered using a flexible combination of online lessons and in-person seminars\, which are held alternately every Wednesday at 2-3.30pm\, starting on 27 October and continuing until 15 December. \nBook your place and find out more here.

SUMMARY:Annual Forum 2021 (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Forum is an opportunity to find out about some of the recent and upcoming work of the AONB Partnership staff team and to discuss matters relating to the future well-being of our natural land cultural heritage. Last year was the first time we’ve not held the forum since 2004\, and this year we are holding an online event – there won’t be the opportunity to see some of the work in the field\, but we hope we’ll still be able to show you much of what’s going on\, albeit virtually. \nThis year there’ll be presentations on some major areas of current work – from our hugely successful peatland programme\, to ecological restoration at Estate level\, to landscape-scale nature recovery and public engagement projects\, our Farming in Protected Landscapes programme\, and some of our interpretation and education work. Though it’s a webinar format\, and sadly we won’t see you\, there’ll still be an opportunity to put questions to the team using the webinar’s Q&A function\, and dig a bit deeper into the work and its benefits and challenges. \nFor the first time this year\, we’ll be bringing in a panel from around the country to discuss the challenges we face in bringing about large-scale ecological restoration in the face of a global climate and ecological crisis. The panel will include Sarah Mukherjee (writer\, broadcaster and Chief Executive of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment); Liz Newton\, (a Director at Natural England); Steve Trotter (Chief Executive of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Vice Chair of the Partnership); Rebecca Wrigley (Chief Executive of Rewilding Britain). \nWe will have a guest panel discussion about the prospects for nature recovery in the uplands\, followed by an opportunity to join in a moderated question and answer session with the panel. \nPendlebury Award\nIn 2020 we couldn’t give out our Pendlebury Award\, celebrating a person or group that has done great work for conserving the AONB or helping people to discover what makes it special. This year we’ll be able to make the award\, which is given in memory of the Partnership’s first chair Bob Pendlebury. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n
