We will be ‘dipping’ with nets and pots to look for the insect life below the water surface.  \nPlease wear sturdy footwear\, and clothing suitable for the weather and potentially messy activities. Wellies will be necessary if you want to enter the water. We have some available to borrow. \nSuitable for children aged 5 to 12 years. All children need to be accompanied by an adult. DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand\, the team at Grassholme Observatory have laid on this exclusive event to educate the little ones on all things spacey – Saturday 17 October 2026\, 6pm to 7.30pm. \nThis is a great way to get children interested in astronomy and science. They will enjoy an interactive talk in the classroom and then will be able to see and touch rocks from space – meteorites. A stunning interactive talk on space stuff in the purpose-built classroom and then weather permitting outside for some stargazing and peering through telescopes. \nHot chocolate and radiators are available too. A wonderful introduction to family astronomy under the dark skies of Grassholme and the North Pennines. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly when you are outside. The observatory\, classroom and toilets are accessible. This is a pet free event. \n\nAdult: £19 (16+)\nChild: £12 (1-16)\nConcession: £16 (65+\, Blue Badge holder)\nFamily: £65 (max of 4\, min of 3)\n\nYour booking is non-refundable. Learn how these remarkable creatures navigate the night\, where they live\, how they hunt\, and the clever ways they avoid becoming prey themselves. \nUsing a range of specialist equipment and survey techniques\, we’ll detect\, attract and observe nocturnal wildlife\, offering a rare opportunity to get a closer look at some of the North Pennines’ most elusive night-time residents. \nThe event includes a short walk of approximately 1 km over rough ground and is suitable for families with children aged six to sixteen.
