DESCRIPTION:Our self-guided trail for the 2026 North Pennines Stargazing Festival is ‘creatures of the night’. \nCome along with your family and explore the woods around Bowlees Visitor Centre. Follow the trail around the site\, taking you on an exciting journey\, discovering the creatures of the night. \nAs you follow the trail you will pick up clues in the form of letters – spell out the word and you will receive a prize. \nPick up your instruction leaflet and answer sheet at the visitor centre – £1 per child. SUMMARY:Volunteer opportunity to remove invasive Garden Lady’s-mantle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a practical day to help dig up and remove invasive Garden Lady’s-mantle (Alchemilla mollis) from an area around an Upper Teesdale beck on Thursday 22 October\, 10am to 3.30pm. \nThis area of Upper Teesdale in the North Pennines National Landscape is especially important for the population of rare native plants that are found there. If the Garden Lady’s-mantle is left to set seed\, there is a risk of it spreading to further sites and possibly out-competing and replacing the important native plant communities. \nThis activity requires a good level of fitness as well as the ability to navigate uneven terrain. Training will be given on the morning of the event. Please bring packed lunch\, and any other refreshments. Please wear outdoor clothing and bring waterproofs\, and wear boots with a sturdy sole. \nExact location will be sent 48 hours prior to the event. Suitable for ages 18+. \nVolunteer opportunities may be postponed due to weather conditions\, any changes will be communicated at least 24 hours before the event where possible. \nDelivered in partnership with Tees Rivers Trust. \nPlease sign up using the Better Impact volunteer platform. \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Discover the hidden creatures of the night on a guided evening family walk from the Bowlees Visitor Centre in Upper Teesdale\, Tuesday 27 October 2026\, 7pm to 9pm. \nJoin the North Pennines National Landscape team as we explore the fascinating lives of moths\, bats\, owls and other nocturnal mammals. Learn how these remarkable creatures navigate the night\, where they live\, how they hunt\, and the clever ways they avoid becoming prey themselves. \nUsing a range of specialist equipment and survey techniques\, we’ll detect\, attract and observe nocturnal wildlife\, offering a rare opportunity to get a closer look at some of the North Pennines’ most elusive night-time residents. \nThe event includes a short walk of approximately 1 km over rough ground and is suitable for families with children aged six to sixteen. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \n\nOne child: £6\nTwo children: £10\nThree children: £13 (accompanying adults free)\n\nPlease wear sturdy boots or wellies\, warm waterproof clothing\, and bring a torch (a red-light torch is ideal if you have one).
