DESCRIPTION:A magical evening of stargazing and a three course meal. Discover the magnificence of the night sky with an exciting stargazing experience at the breath-taking High Force Waterfall in Upper Teesdale on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October and Friday 1 and Saturday 2 November. \n\nBooking times are either at 6pm to 8.30pm or 8pm to 11pm.\n\nThe evening begins with a delicious three course meal at the High Force Hotel. After that\, we will walk down to the waterfall\, where the beautiful scenery will be illuminated for you to take photographs with your phone. \nThis event will be run and presented by Graham Darke. Graham’s interest in the night sky was sparked as a child by his grandfather who was himself a self-taught amateur astronomer. Graham is a well-known figure in astronomical circles in the North East of England and has over 30 years of experience delivering outreach events to people of all ages. He is the honorary president of Sunderland Astronomical Society. \nGaze up at the stars using the astronomy binoculars provided\, admire the web of constellations in the sky and develop a greater understanding of the sky at night. \nTreat someone with a passion for the stars to an evening of discovery and learning\, or enjoy it yourself with your partner\, friends or family members. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes. DESCRIPTION:Experience Star Camp for a weekend of all things astronomical and beyond\, 25 to 27 October in Teesdale. The camp is perfect for novice astronomers and is great for adults and children (6+ years). Telescopes will be provided\, along with expert guidance and you are welcome to bring your own equipment too\, including cameras (with tripods) and binoculars. \nThere will also be astronomy themed talks\, solar observing and a bottle rocket competition. \nDuring the weekend Saturn will be looking amazing\, along with a super bright Jupiter and a big moon. His stories take people deeply into the world so that they experience being a part of its elements\, drawing on our inter-connectedness with all its wonder\, mystery\, grief and joy. \nNeill Sanders\, from Go Stargazing\, shares his expertise and enthusiasm for astronomy with interesting space facts\, a laser-pen guided tour of the night and presents the opportunity for you to explore the secrets of the sky using high-tech telescopes. *Visibility is weather dependent. \nHot beverages and food available (donation) or you can bring your own. Free minibus transportation available on booking. There are toilet facilities. Please note that the site is not wheelchair accessible. No dogs please. \nDress appropriately for cold\, autumn weather. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the dark skies of the North Pennines and join us for a free mine trip like no other at this evening event held at Nenthead Mines\, near Alston\, Tuesday 29 October\, 2pm to 6pm. \nDuring this workshop you will learn how to make your own paper lantern that you will get to take away with you. Following the workshop you will then be able to walk in the footsteps of miners past\, and process through the mine using your lantern. \nThis includes an underground tour of the mine led by knowledgeable volunteers from Nenthead Mines Conservation Society. \nAccessibility information: the walk through the mine site and the underground portion is generally level and flat. The underground tour is generally tall enough to walk at full height\, although the first approximately 30m requires you to duck as this is the shortest part of the mine. There are two short ladders to climb as part of the mine tour which have handrails and are firmly installed. Suitable for children ages 7+. SUMMARY:Dark sky astronomy and stargazing
DESCRIPTION:The event will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer at Grassholme Observatory\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. \nAfter the welcome Gary will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nWith no Moon in the sky\, you will look out for the Milky Way\, and many deep sky objects like galaxies\, nebulae and star clusters. You will then use the robotic telescope to scour the skies for other jewels in the cosmos. \nThen it’s back into the classroom for a hot drink and questions. Bring warm clothes – it can get chilly when we are outside.
