Follow the trail around the site\, taking you on an exciting journey\, discovering the creatures of the night. \nAs you follow the trail you will pick up clues in the form of letters – spell out the word and you will receive a prize. \nPick up your instruction leaflet and answer sheet at the visitor centre – £1 per child. And with October skies\, it is the perfect time to introduce children to the night sky\, in a setting that feels exciting\, safe and unforgettable. \nWhat to expect: \n\nA warm welcome at one of the UK’s most scenic natural landmarks\nA relaxed\, child-friendly supper (two courses) – the perfect chance to warm up\, settle in and build excitement before heading out into the night.\nAn interactive stargazing session with experienced guides\nA chance to spot constellations\, planets\, shooting stars\, and deep-sky objects\nFun\, family-friendly explanations perfect for budding astronomers of all ages\nSeasonal stories from mythology and science that bring the cosmos to life\n\nWhether you are a family with young children\, teens\, or curious adults\, this event offers a safe\, engaging\, and magical way to connect with the universe and each other. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes. The walk to the waterfall will be dark and may be slippery – suitable footwear is advised. SUMMARY:Astronomy and stargazing
DESCRIPTION:The event at Grassholme Observatory\, on Thursday 29 October 2026\, 8pm to 11pm\, will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. \nAfter the welcome Gary\, and the team\, will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will be split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nHave you ever looked up at the night-time sky and wondered why you can’t see anything other than stars? Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered how far it is to the stars that you can see? Do you want to know what a star is\, how a telescope works\, or even where it all came from? If your answered yes to any of these questions\, then you have come to the right place – Grassholme Observatory’s introduction evenings will cover all this and more. \nAfter the observing ends it is back into the classroom for a hot drink and a chat\, before heading off home. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly when you are outside. The observatory\, classroom and toilets are accessible.
