Deneholme Woods Special Invertebrate Site

Deneholme Woods is a fantastic site for deadwood and leaf litter species, with standing and fallen deadwood, rot holes and sap runs. The site also features a flower-rich woodland understory and the Philip burn.

Seasonal highlights

The woodland awakens during spring, with hawthorn shieldbugs emerging to mate. The site is fantastic for beetles, with snail hunting beetles found within deadwood and speckled longhorn beetles feeding on flowers between May and August. The stunning alder moth caterpillar can be found from mid-late summer, along with late bear and bumblebee hoverflies.
